The President of the European Commission has said that he wants an EU Army

President Junckers said:

“You would not create a European army to use it immediately,” Juncker told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in Germany in an interview published on Sunday.

“But a common army among the Europeans would convey to Russia that we are serious about defending the values of the European Union.”

It's clear the EU sees itself as much more than merely a trading organisation.

It's not just aiming for political union, but also to be become an influential military force - that is not under democratic control.

I don;t want to be part of a military bloc and political union, masquerading as a trade organisation. I want out of all that.

I was at the BBC Great Debate last night. In between each section, the BBC showed a short information film. You can see it on BBC Iplayer. At 1.12.10, the voiceover is "Senior EU leaders are talking about the creation of a European army" Noone on the Remain side disputed this.

We shall see the plans post referendum. Sadly, if we remain, it will be too late to exempt ourselves and our children from the militarisation of the EU. Our children will be sent to fight for the expansionist EU.

Those of us who have lost family in war before know that this is a real possibility. It can and does happen.

"Senior EU leaders are talking about the creation of a European army"

  1. There is a difference between talking about something and actually being able to do it.

  2. There is no 'too late'. The UK can leave the EU at any time. The EU only has power by consent. The UK will never have to agree to take part in an EU army, unless the elected UK government wants to take part in an EU army. Conversely, there would be nothing to stop a post Brexit UK government sending troops to the 'EU army' anyway. (Or the EU army could take power by force, but in that case they aren't going to be care whether the UK is in or out of the EU).

  3. Leaving all that aside, if you are talking about people being conscripted to fight in a modern war, we really are talking about an end of days scenario, and the existence of the 'EU army' would be the least of your worries.

Even NATO are now saying it's not a good idea for the UK to leave the EU.

Spinflight · 22/06/2016 19:15

The remain campaign have, rather wisely, merely tried to avoid the issue for the entire debate.

We appear to have a few remainiacs who didn't get the memo.

Maybe one of them could answer a simple question.

Why does the EU need an Army? Who are they looking to shoot at?

scaryteacher · 22/06/2016 19:42

MrsBlackthorn The Sec-Gen is saying that, but not all of NATO agrees with him, especially those I know who have voted out.

merrymouse · 22/06/2016 20:42

Nobody has suggested they want an EU Army.

How exactly do you imagine the EU would force the UK to join An EU army against its wishes?

merrymouse · 22/06/2016 20:44

Who are they looking to shoot at?

OK, you've got me. It's not so much an EU army that is being planned as UNIT and they will be shooting at aliens.
