The President of the European Commission has said that he wants an EU Army

President Junckers said:

“You would not create a European army to use it immediately,” Juncker told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in Germany in an interview published on Sunday.

“But a common army among the Europeans would convey to Russia that we are serious about defending the values of the European Union.”

It's clear the EU sees itself as much more than merely a trading organisation.

It's not just aiming for political union, but also to be become an influential military force - that is not under democratic control.

I don;t want to be part of a military bloc and political union, masquerading as a trade organisation. I want out of all that.

The arguments are it will show the world that there would never again be a war between EU countries & NATO is not enough since many of its members are outside the continent.

That would be the USA and Canada (and if you count offshore Islands, Iceland and the UK) who are 'outside' the continent. Mmm 2 or 4 out of the 28 NATO nations isn't 'many' is it?

Furthermore, Article V of the Washington Treaty guarantees that there will never be war in Europe again, as many EU member states are also NATO nations or PfP countries.

The trouble is, like with the Common Foreign and Security Policy, nations have permanent interests, not permanent friends. Which is why it is usually so bloody difficult to get the EU acting in concert on any issue of foreign or security policy: we didn't manage in Bosnia, and it's been downhill ever since. The only thing we were vaguely in concert over was sanctions on Iran - but as now Iran are our new best friends, and we're fine with them developing their nuclear capacity, I am not entirely certain that's a good thing!

MrSnow · 09/05/2016 16:07

Iran have been testing ballistic missiles today. Ho-hum.

The Austrian Chancellor resigned today after the pol success of the right wing last week.

Cameron says if we vote to LEAVE there may will be war and conflict. Two Tories I know resigned from the party today in disgust at Cameron's ridiculous Peak Project Fear scare-mongering. He is just embarrassing himself and this country.

Cameron has shot himself in the foot again - you should not attempt to scare your population with lies and fear.

He has simply lost his credibility. He is just a laughing stock. How can you tell Cameron is lying?- his lips are moving.

Cameron says if we vote to LEAVE there may will be war and conflict.

No he didn't. DC highlighted the role that the bloc has played, & still plays, in maintaining stability on the continent, & managing external threats. See the transcript of his speech;

I was wondering about re-turfing my lawn but now the REMAIN campaign says there is to be a Third World War towards the end of June, I think I will probably just get some petunias instead.

I understand a new strain of marigold is being developed that can withstand the radiation caused by World War Three - for planting post-Brexit

In his speech Cameron deliberately avoids saying what "will" happen. But he plants many seeds of doubt by asking a lot of loaded questions, aimed to scare guide people to a conclusion that Brexit is unsafe.

and the Press picked up on it with their summary 'Cameron warns of war, conflict genocide and Third World War'.

So now I have people telling me that Cameron has lost the plot.

His judgement is really poor.
