How will you be voting? Can admin add a poll?

Far better to be ahead of the curve, blaze the trail and make that leap of faith.

Yes, I agree Smile

AlpacaLypse · 26/04/2016 11:04

At the moment it's still not a subject that's coming up much in conversation. Usually when I talk to people it's about children or dogs Smile. However, when it has, the opinion is around fifty/fifty.

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 26/04/2016 11:06

Leave. If we vote to stay our voice will be drowned out among the other 27 "voices". The EU will ride rough shod over us as the "people will have spoken".

I am also increasingly uncomfortable about counties like Turkey joining the EU. It hugely benefits Turkey to join, but what benefit to the EU is there if Turkey joins?
What do they bring to the party?

AlwaysBeYourself · 26/04/2016 11:34

Leave. I never realised just how many billions we pay to the EU each year.

DayToDayGlobalShit · 26/04/2016 11:36

leave

Twooter · 26/04/2016 12:16

Although to be fair, the EU doesn't seem to take any notice of other countries either - look at the Dutch and the Ukraine referendum.

flingingmelon · 26/04/2016 12:47

I'm not making any decisions until the latest Eurozone financial crisis plays out.

My instinct is to stay, but the EU might be looking a bit different by mid June.

TooMuchRain · 26/04/2016 13:21

Remain.

And have been looking at job sites elsewhere just in case because the thought of living in Ukip's little England terrifies me (economically, socially and culturally).

P1nkP0ppy · 26/04/2016 13:26

Out.
Before Turkey joins.

lorelei9here · 26/04/2016 13:29

rumble "I'm also very worried that if we stay, the EU will have a British mandate, something they have never had before, and EU interference and pressure will ramp up massively. I wouldn't give the survival of the pound long, among many other things."

I'm LEAVE anyway but you have just made a point that really worries me. You are quite right. The Euro is a terrifying thought.

goldfinch01 · 26/04/2016 13:32

Leave

STIDW · 26/04/2016 17:45

Have a read of the Five Presidents report for the direction of travel.

What we have is an EU with different tiers of membership to reflect the economic & political realities of different states. The UK & other states such as Denmark cannot have further integration forced upon them against their wishes, but we cannot prevent other states who want it having further integration. The Five Presidents’ focus is the eurozone but not “centralisation of all aspects of revenue and expenditure policy”. They want a deeper single market & a eurozone treasury.

Britain is not in the single currency so we wouldn’t be directly affected

STIDW · 26/04/2016 18:02

Before Turkey joins.

Turkey won't be joining the EU for years, not least of all because all the existing countries must agree.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/04/2016 18:25

I thought Turkey was on a fast track to joining because of their agreement to help with the refugee situation?

ExitPursuedByABear · 26/04/2016 18:28

There are many in the leave camp who are not 'little Englanders' or UKIP supporters.

But feel free to bob on to somewhere you feel more comfortable. Free country and all that.

STIDW · 26/04/2016 18:56

I thought Turkey was on a fast track to joining because of their agreement to help with the refugee situation?

No, unfortunately sections of the British media either spinned the story or got it wrong.

The statement issued by the EU Council of Ministers said it had been agreed to fast track the "readmission" of refugees coming from Turkey back there & visa liberalisation. It was also agreed to "re-energerise" accession talks with Turkey, but nothing was said about fast tracking it's admission to the EU.

"Visa liberalisation" means replacing easily forged visas with more secure machine readable passports for short term travel in Schengen counties plus measures to combat crime eg fingerprinting & introducing new laws. Because the UK isn't in Schengen there will be no change, Turks will still require visas to come here.

scaryteacher · 26/04/2016 19:04

Life can be made difficult, and with the introduction of QMV, that will undoubtedly happen. Dh was a seconded national expert to the EUMS, and based on his experience, the EU isn't up for change, is undemocratic, and he believes we are better off out.

I've met some of the Eurocrats, and the EU Is like a religion to them, and they are fanatical believers. I find their 'vision' alarming, and would prefer that the UK was in charge of its own destiny.

fourmummy · 26/04/2016 19:37

Scaryteacher - that's really interesting. What is the 'vision', based on your experiences?

morbidhamster · 26/04/2016 20:02

Leave.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 26/04/2016 20:08

Stay, although I think in the future it might be better to leave, I don't think now is the right time.

Having said that we probably won't get another say for a while so maybe I'll change my mind before now and voting day...

Limer · 26/04/2016 21:45

Cupcakes if the Remain vote wins, there won't be another referendum. Ever. It'll be declared as "the people have spoken". The Tories only promised this referendum because they thought they'd lose the last general election, it was a last-ditch vote-grabber.

This is genuinely the only chance you'll get. It's not like general elections that come round every few years. So please think long and hard about your once in a lifetime vote.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/04/2016 21:50

I agree with Limer. If you think we're better off leaving, vote leave cupcakes, there won't be another opportunity. Unless it all implodes and we have to leave by default.

STIDW · 27/04/2016 09:30

[the EU] is undemocratic

Problem is democracy means different things to different people & it's a question of achieving the right balance. Compared to a country, the EU has democratic shortcomings but it has more democratic controls than a typical international organisation. Full Fact analysis impartially examines the claims of both Brexit & Remain.

rumblingDMexploitingbstds · 27/04/2016 09:37

Agree Thickandthin there will only ever be this one chance to leave. However if the 'leave' vote wins, there are very likely to be future referendums every five minutes on getting back in. Labour will hold one the second they get back in power. How many times were Ireland made to vote before they came up with the right answer?
