Hello everybody, starting a thread for parents with children who have applied for 10+ this year.

I don't think they do. Just going by my personal experience with DS2 it seems unlikely (I don't think T knew what W had offered him)

Thank you SoupDragon!

Plus, T subsequently improved their offer which would be somewhat underhand if they routinely discussed them with W.

Obviously things might have changed now but I do think the "recruitment" process is entirely separate.

user1473290348 · 14/01/2023 10:04

Thanks for sharing Soup Dragon. That's really interesting to know. Did Trinity match? I didn't realise they do things like that.

SoupDragon · 14/01/2023 10:13

Maybe they don't any more - it was the previous headmaster who did it. They made it so that T was cheaper than W. DS1 was already at T which maybe made a difference. DS2's maths mark in the T exam was exceptional and his English utterly shit 😂 This was pre any verbal reasoning/critical thinking etc.

Do we know how much maximum scholarship Whitgift offers? We are not eligible for Bursary so looking for range of Scholarship we can expect. DS is good in academics (hope he did well in test also) and good hard ball cricket player (he cleared till last round of Surrey County cricket)..

Same question for Trinity.
The school website said, Scholarships are worth a percentage of the school fees (up to a maximum of 50%), does it mean that each scholarship is up to 50%, or in total up to 50% if you receive more than one?

SoupDragon · 14/01/2023 12:37

I believe most are usually in the region of 10% but you can have 10% for academic plus 10% for sports.

I found this thread from last year which asks the same thing...

I heard that they tell you at the Trinity interview what range you can expect. I found out someone i know went to the Trinity interview yesterday afternoon. He said one of the ladies who worked there was quite forthcoming with info. Am I right in thinking you had an interview already? Were you there in morning or afternoon? Hope it went well!

Yes, DS interviewed yesterday in the late morning by Mr Price. Seems he has done great to calm DS down. The headmaster told me DS's performance in the first round. A bout the scholarship, he just said they will make the decision after all boys are interviewed. Maybe it means he isn't the top ones.

Thank you! Very helpful. Now I know what to expect.

user1473290348 · 14/01/2023 13:51

@PamZg It's great your your DS felt at ease. They're really good at that at Trinity. Hopefully he did well in his interview. I was told that some of the children being considered for academic scholarships were interviewed yesterday and if that was the case with you, they would have told you in the invitation. Hopefully your DS is in the running! I think they consider children in top 5 or 10%, something like that. So that's superb if he's in that mix and he (and you!) Should be very proud. Did the head give an indication of what type of percentages they offer in your chat? I will reach out to my contact to ask them for details and post back here.

Re: scholarships.

DS2 is in yr4 at T and is on a 20% academic scholarship (he started in j bugs).

DS1 is in L6 at T and was given a 5% academic scholarship for 6th form, due to his GCSE results.

A friend's son was offered a 40% combined academic /sports scholarship at W for 10+ entry (he's now in L6). His mum rang W and expressed concern as to the amount of sport he would have to commit to, and they agreed to swap it to a 40% academic scholarship.

A neighbour's son was offered a 40% music scholarship at T. This was then upped to 50% as they were sounding unsure whether they'd accept (but the assessor did say he was the "most naturally gifted person" he's ever come across in that instrument).

So there are certainly higher percentages than 10% to be had at both W & T.

Good luck to everyone!

SoupDragon · 14/01/2023 14:11

Yes, DS1 was on 30% but high ones are the exception rather than the rule.

user1473290348 · 14/01/2023 19:06

Wow, amazing scholarships! Well done! Out of curiosity, what how did your sons score in exams? Ie top quartile/top 10/top 5% etc.

OP posts:
RockaLock · 14/01/2023 22:02

I think that we were told DS2 (20% scholarship) had scored in the top 10.

He aced the nonverbal reasoning (or whatever that paper was called), did very well in the maths, not so well in English.

user1473290348 · 14/01/2023 22:21

@RockaLock - that's an amazing achievement! Well done to your son. And encouraging to hear you sent two sons there and they are happy.

Thank you guys! The relief! But there's a clash of exam dates so I need to ring them to see if one can rearrange.

Good morning everybody. I’ve been watching this thread with interest. You have all been a really good support during this waiting period. My son was fortunate enough to have an interview at Trinity. This was on Friday with Mr Price. He was lovely. For anybody scheduled to meet him, rest assured your son will be well looked after. Some parents said their sons were asked academic questions, some were asked more interview questions. Curious to know what people’s experiences were. Wishing everybody good luck.

PamZg · 15/01/2023 12:09

My son was asked a bit of both on Friday, but more academic questions. I thought his performance in the first round was on the low end among the group of boys interviewed on Friday. That's why the school needed to find out how good he is academically.

Those who have attended 10+ Interview, any feedback?

Wolfiestar · 16/01/2023 01:52

For 11plus how many do Trinity interview?

Daydreamscometrue · 16/01/2023 06:49

Same question for 11+ at Whitgift?
