Trinity or Whitgift - 2 Scholarships

vaux777 · 04/10/2022 22:44

Hi,
How generous are Trinity and Whitgift in Scholarships. Especially interested in knowing how much an academic as well as a music scholarship would be worth? Not adding any bursary as we will probably not qualify for one. Has anyone ever been offered a academic and music scholarship at these schools worth more than 50%?

I think it unlikely that even with a combined scholarship it would total 50% unless top of the academic scholars and a truly exceptional musician.

ChnandlerBong · 05/10/2022 09:27

I thought the cap was way lower than 50% - more like 20% at most independents? You need to contact the individual schools to get the most up to date info

Mouriv · 05/10/2022 11:24

OP, have NC for this but I have a DS at one of these schools on a combined scholarship worth 25% of fees. Not sure if that is the maximum but I do know of others on combined scholarships for lower amounts (e.g. 10%). Both schools are very generous with scholarships but both have plenty of talented boys applying for academic and co-curricular scholarships and I suspect 50% would be highly unusual, let alone more than 50%. Are you sure you wouldn't qualify for a bursary?

thatsnot · 05/10/2022 12:22

DD had an academic scholarship and a music scholarship at a nearby (to Trinity and Whitgift) school of 30%. I think anything above that would probably only be for bursary applicants.

LIZS · 05/10/2022 12:27

50% scholarships are unusual even at W and T and your ds would have to be exceptional to qualify for that level. Competition is fierce. They do have a relatively high bursary threshold though.

ChangeOver22 · 05/10/2022 15:02

We know of someone at one of those schools. He has two scholarships but they are worth 10% combined. 5% for each one.

andherewegoagainagain · 05/10/2022 16:34

I know of someone who received a 15% academic from Trinity. They did not apply for sports, arts, music etc but guess if you qualified for any of those, they'd probably make it to 25%-30%?. Maybe 15% wasn't even the maximum for the academic scholarship?

Know of other kids, at 'similar' schools, who were offered academic scholarships of 25%, 33% and even 40%. Again, assume someone who also receives a sports scholarship (or music, art) could make that up to 50%? Believe 50% is the maximum schools are able to award nowadays as scholarships (as opposed to bursaries).

My DS is at an indie and received an academic scholarship only of 1/3 off. I know of other kids who ranged 20-40% (academic scholarship only).

Atishooatishoowe · 05/10/2022 19:18

Whitgift gives big scholarships. 50% not unheard of - genuine scholarship, not a bursary.

RockaLock · 05/10/2022 23:00

I know 2 boys who got 40% scholarships.

One at T, he was a very talented musician.

One at W, an all-round scholarship.

40% is the biggest I have personally heard of, but I don't know if they ever give higher.

DS2 is on a 20% academic scholarship at T.

Firefox1066 · 06/10/2022 09:05

DS's ! & 2 are on 20% All round scholarships at W. Both represent GB internationally in their respective sports and do well academically. They were awarded 10% for Sport and 10% for academic each.

In all my time as a W parent Ive never heard of a scholarship being more than 40% which was 25% Music (The person came from abroad and is now at the Royal Philharmonic) and 15% Academic

Firefox1066 · 06/10/2022 09:06

*DS's 1& 2 that should say!

Schools reserve most of this funding for bursaries now. They need to show the charity commission they are delivering a public benefit and broadening access via means tested funding, rather than ability based funding to those who are seen as well off or too well off to qualify for a scholarship doesn’t impress.

Scholarhsip amounts are dropping. Lots of schools offer honorary scholarships now or fixed amounts like £1k, which of course drop as a % of overall fees as fees rise during the course of a student’s time at the school.

I’d be really surprised if anyone in the last few years has had 50% purely on scholarship. What often happens is people refer to their support which is a combination of scholarship and bursary in purely scholarship terms, so people get the idea that scholarships deliver more than they actually do.

Whitgift levels for bursary are higher than in many schools. So if you don’t qualify, you can’t rely on hefty scholarships.

notanotheroneagain · 08/10/2022 09:19

Yep, I agree with others, Whitgift is incredibly generous, but I've only heard of up to 40% and those dc were national club level for sports.

Times have changed, but the Whitgift foundation was always known as one of the most generous in the country for bursaries.

Most apply for a bursary, and top things off with the scholarship.

Atishooatishoowe · 08/10/2022 10:55

Whitgift’s website says 50%.

Hello all, is anybody's DS applying for 10+ this year for 2023 entry to Trinity/Whitgift? I can't find a thread on this like there have been in previous yrs.

drizzledon · 30/11/2022 23:20

Yes we are!

Soxa · 01/12/2022 07:19

My child was offered 50% at whitgift, academic scholarship, a couple of years ago. The other 50% can be topped up by a bursary if fees are unaffordable. I got the impression that they don’t give out too many of these 50%. The school stressed it was special. Maybe they offer 9 or so, knowing maybe only 4 or so will accept (we took a different school in the event).

However, i think they also give out such amounts-off for art scholars too, possibly sports, if your child is talented like that too.

anyway, if you are poorly off, you can certainly get a “free place” if you combine a scholarship with a bursary.

Soxa · 01/12/2022 07:24

Oh ps you ask about combining academic and music scholarships. Yes! If your child is exceptional at music, I believe that can lead to 50% off. The academic scholarship is separate and won’t impact things (whereas they would never give both a, say, sports and music scholarship to the same child since the expectation is that sports/music scholars contribute significantly in those fields to the school). However, they are happy for you to be both super bright (academic scholarship) and super musical/sporty/artsy.

Soxa · 01/12/2022 07:26

Ie 50% plus 50% is perfectly possible. A child at our school has both a music and an academic scholarship… being exceptional at music and academics can often go hand in hand, after all.

user1473290348 · 01/12/2022 19:09

Thank you Soxa. And well done to your son for getting such a large scholarship. Would you mind telling me what marks he achieved to get that?

user1473290348 · 01/12/2022 19:10

Is your son doing both drizzledon? How is their prep and how are their nerves going?

drizzledon · 01/12/2022 19:19

Yes both. Prep has been ok, mostly practice papers and trying to identify and close any gaps. He was doing well on his practice papers but then we did the CLS exam on Wed and he didn't complete two of the papers and didn't feel it went well. So now I don't know what to think! Nerves are ok at the moment. I feel like we're over the worst having been through the CLS exam, hope so😥

What about you?

user1473290348 · 01/12/2022 23:46

Prep has been very last minute as we didn't plan on the 10+. Oopsie. Hope the CLS marks come out ok. My son did their practice paper and I definitely thought it was the hardest.

Nerves wise I think he's OK. Me- not so much! LOL

I just hope the boys enjoy their day on Saturday.

Have you got a first choice? We didn't apply to CLS- too far a commute for us.

drizzledon · 02/12/2022 08:13

Trinity is our preference but we’re trying not to think too much about it until we hopefully have an offer or two in hand
