Hello everybody, starting a thread for parents with children who have applied for 10+ this year.

Regarding extra curricular sports commitment time, if helpful - our son has a couple of mornings a week with 7am sports training. In the afternoons he’s usually done in time to get the 5.30pm school bus home - only a couple of times has a sports fixture at another school meant he’s not been back in time for the bus. Participation in Saturday fixtures is expected but usually done by lunchtime at the latest. This is Trinity, but can’t imagine Whitgift is much different.

@user1473290348 , I have decided for my son.. W 10+ and we have offer with no scholarship and no bursary. I am going to decline the offer today or tomorrow because I needed some kind of scholarship. Also, the main reason is: if I accept offer now, I am locked in and will have no choice (kind of) in 11+. I want to give a shot in 11+ again with wider options - Wilson's, Sutton Grammar and Wallington Grammar also added and see where it goes. It's a bit of gamble but I have decided to take it :)..
Phew , one more year !!!!

I'm not sure if I replied to this @pankajbh. But congratulations on making the decision! I completely understand what you mean. It's great to be in a position where you can make a choice. Passing W exams is very reassuring for 11+ grammars. Wishing you the best of luck with that exam prep.

I'm still undecided. After reviewing our finances with a fine tooth comb, it will be very, very tight on our household if we accept. So currently, we are erring on the side of giving up the places also.

For what it’s worth my son got a scholarship at trinity for year 6 and I turned it down because I realised finances would be too tight. I got him into Wilson’s where he thrived (for free!) and is now at Oxford Uni having the time of his life studying physics. Hope that helps!!

Thanks @User28994 . That is helpful. A good friend did remind me that Oxbridge/some other unis also prefer to take applicants from state schools. And this extends to many graduate recruitment programmes at top firms. So it's not just the money. It's everything. Sigh. I've 99% decided now. Will be submitting the requisite forms tomorrow.

We've just accepted our 10+ place at Whitgift! Do you think that the school might help new families connect with each other before September? I don't know if GDPR makes that more difficult nowadays - I know if does in our junior school....

They do an induction afternoon for the 10+ and 11+ boys before school starts. ( It was mentioned in the offer letter ). I looked up the schools calendar, last year they had it on the 31st of August and the kids had a 3 days residential trip in mid September. ( 10+ boys) so I guess there will be opportunities to get to know a few boys quite early on.

May I ask if anybody attended the trinity deciders tour today. We didn't attend as we plan to decline. But before I submit the form, I wonder what everybody's view is? Interested as we plan to do all this again with 11+!

We were there - anyone else? I think it was nice for my DS to see the school again but we didn't learn a whole lot more having already been to the school a few times.

Is anyone yet to make a decision? Only 5 days until the Trinity 10+ deadline!

Pollypocket81 · 24/02/2023 14:05

Would anyone share what they did for prep for 10+ for Whitgift/Trinity at home? How does it differ from 11plus?

For us we decided to apply in part because it was clear DS had a good chance since he was strong in maths and a voracious reader. This meant our prep was mostly about exam technique and filling any gaps in the maths curriculum. I think reading is key for doing well in all the English-based exams (comprehension, essay and verbal reasoning) plus it’s fun! So I would really recommend encouraging reading as much as possible (audiobooks are good if they’re not keen readers).

We did the 10+ sample papers we could find (obviously Trinity and Whitgift, also City and Solihull). Apart from that we practiced 11+ sample papers which we downloaded from different private school websites. Also some CGP study book and workbooks for maths and Bond 10 minute tests in maths. There’s no non-verbal reasoning at 10+ although some of that type of content might be covered in the critical reasoning paper at W. I suspect the English-based papers are not too different between 10+ and 11+. There are a couple of additional topics on the maths 11+ curriculum for some of the schools.

user1473290348 · 26/02/2023 03:00

Hope everybody is almost there with their choices.

I was wondering out of interest if you could share what you went for and what type of scholarships were offered. We declined our places and will try again(financial reasons).

@drizzledon thankyou

Lexus1979 · 26/02/2023 11:52

We are declining our offer at Trinity. My son was called for an academic scholarship interview having performed very well. The head master had a 15 minute private chat stating my son had performed in the top 10% in maths and English. But in my personal opinion, I feel the school is channeling more funds to wards bursary than scholarship. And the headmaster stated the maximum scholarship they award is between 5-20% ( and not 50% as stated in the website). It has changed he mentioned. I presume they give more scholarships at 11 plus exam level. My son has got into another higher ranked school of his choice. And we are extremely happy declining the No scholarship offer as it makes our choices clear . Good luck to all

user1473290348 · 26/02/2023 12:15

Congratulations @Lexus1979 . Wishing your son all the best in his alternative school. Great news for him!

Thanks @user1473290348 . Also with Trinity, its a financial commitment from year 6-13. Same as City boys.

I believe there is in store than accepting this place. Aso my perspective. When i attened the open day, i felt the school looked a bit run down. The swimming pool and climing ball were the highlights. But the class rooms looked a bit drab lacking in life. Maybe its just be seeing things on open day haing visited 3 other schools before trinity.

drizzledon · 26/02/2023 13:17

We will probably accept Trinity but still have the fear about whether it’s the right decision. It’s such a big decision and I do think the schools are quite difference so I wouldn’t say it’s the same experience whichever you choose.

Btw we heard T will be increasing fees 5-10% for the next academic year. Just a warning! I expect W will be the same.

Parkrunner1 · 27/02/2023 20:29

@drizzledon , if it helps reassure you at all, our older son is half way through his second year at Trinity and absolutely loves it. The opportunities he and his friends have already had in a relatively short period of time are incredible. That’s why we decided to suck up the extra year of fees and put our younger son in for 10+ this year.

drizzledon · 27/02/2023 20:38

Thanks @Parkrunner1, I appreciate that! We accepted Trinity 🙌🏼

Narcissus82 · 27/02/2023 22:10

@drizzledon we have just accepted Trinity's offer for the 10 plus too! It was a big decision as we will need to turn down our Whitgift offer. Both schools are very impressive.

LondonMum3201 · 01/03/2023 11:59

Hi, Just wondering if anyone on the waiting list for Trinity has heard anything?

London2007 · 01/03/2023 15:04

We accepted the W10+ offer today.

Seekinginfolady · 11/03/2023 07:05

Hello everybody. Has anybody who accepted an offer at Whitgift received any more information about starting in September? Such as dates for the induction day, where and when to buy uniform, clubs timetable etc?
