Anyone still out there?!

LostinLondon, my DS's friends older brother was offered the same at W three years ago, but they had no choice and he joined W. Their DS received the same extra care and attention as other scholars.

Last year W awarded him with a reduction, the main reason being that he is now one of their top boys at his sport and has risen very fast into county level. My friend says that the school claims they could see the potential but as he was not academy/county level at that stage they were unable to offer a %. My friend was very bitter at first but they focussed on making sure he made it and that W ate some humble pie! Which they have to an extent. But to be fair to W they did give the boy extra help, support and mentoring and also opened up the door for him to walk through.

Although my DS is at an academy the costs of travelling around watching him train and play pretty much offsets the value of the scholarship. I just phone DH and he said to accept the offer and move on.. hmmmm men.

LostinLondon · 14/02/2014 13:06

keepingittogether Do you think it's worth going back to them and negotiating? DS has got into DC too (full fees) and was wondering if we could use this to bargain?

keepingittogether · 14/02/2014 13:09

LostinLondon, I fortget to mention that the boy in my previous post was a 10+/ Y6 entrant. I mention this as my friend told me that W see Y6 as a non essential year (only 50 - 60 students) and do not offer a bursary for this year and are also inclined to offer fewer and much less in terms of scholarships. My DS is 11+, last year we opted not to try 10+ as the chances of getting a high % even though DS plays at the highest level he can for his age would be very very slim, so we chose to wait. IF your DS is 10+ then you may want to wait till next year as the chances will be higher, plus you know what to expect!

I plan to ask for more even though my sister-in-law tried last year and failed. Fact is I would rather ask and be told "no" than always wonder. What can they do? They either say "yes" or "no" and as my sister-in-law found they will not take away the offer just because you asked for more. This is sounding more like a Dickensian novel. To be honest I am not that proud, I need to save some money. Go for it!

AliceLostinWonderland · 14/02/2014 13:16

I hope I haven't missed out any names...if I have then so sorry, but Congratulations to you all.

MrsSteptoe · 14/02/2014 13:17

Thanks, alice x

keepingittogether · 14/02/2014 13:18

Thanks Alice x

dippingbackin · 14/02/2014 13:18

DS has an 11+ place at W! All round scholarship awarded, assume that means a bit of sport and academic. Spoke to admissions office so assume full details in the letter.

MrsSteptoe · 14/02/2014 13:19

Hurrah for dippingbackinminor!

mummyinatizz · 14/02/2014 13:24

Can't believe I'm only getting here at 130pm on decision day, and what a whole load of great news - congrats to all.

We too have celebrating to do, offer from W - DS's first and only choice. A no from Emanuel, with a bit too much info on exam results on the letter but didn't want it anyway! where is the sticking out tongue smiley?!

Myriam35690 · 14/02/2014 13:24

keepingittogether - I agree with you - if you don't try, you will always ask yourself what if... but I would wait a few days for the dust to settle so to speak, collect your thoughts & build up the arguments for your "case". Although we are thrilled with the offer we have received, it is big decision and huge financial commitment for us too (holidays - what holiday?) so I totally understand where you are coming from... good luck!

TCofB · 14/02/2014 13:27

had to check on here as been thinking of you all - well done to everyone - those with W sports scholar offers (don't have experience of other co-curricular and academic scholarships) expect to get a courtesy call from the Head of Dept of your DSs particular sporting expertise in the next week or two if you have any queries - school sports questions that is rather than offer/% discussions

MrsSteptoe · 14/02/2014 13:28

Tizzymummy, Emanuel who? Wink Well done to your DS!

ladydepp · 14/02/2014 13:35

I bet the admissions people in these schools all go home tonight to a large glass of Wine too!

Stressedbutblessed · 14/02/2014 13:37

Thx Alice- a big cheer to all so far it's turned out well for everyoneGrin

pooziepuzzle · 14/02/2014 13:40

Place at W but no schol after being told at interview DS would be put forward for all rounder. Plays at academy level. Very disappointed

ladydepp · 14/02/2014 13:43

Thanks Alice!

Emanuel's loss - mummyinatizz. Congrats on W place. Emanuel were our 4th choice but DS didn't think he'd get it as the Maths was so hard on the exam. He was confident about Alleyn's though - weird.

My brain is now buzzing about which offer to accept - feel v lucky to have the choice!

ladydepp · 14/02/2014 13:44

Poolside - sorry to hear it, shame they raised hopes and didn't follow through....

ladydepp · 14/02/2014 13:44

That should be poozie not poolside (damn autocorrect)

LostinLondon · 14/02/2014 13:48

pooziepuzzle We're in the same boat. Sounds like a lot of DSs got sports scholarships this year so maybe they just ran out of money when they got to our boys! My DH just rang W and they said our DS was 'on the cusp'.

If they flogged a couple of peacocks that might put some more money in the scholarship pot.

mummyinatizz · 14/02/2014 13:56

sorry you're disappointed poozie.

thanks MrsS, ladydepp I'm delighted. Thinking I won't show DS the Emanuel reject letter - 35% in maths! hope W have good remedial maths dept!!

AliceLostinWonderland · 14/02/2014 14:00

Mummyinatizz and dippingbackin Congratulations!!!

W offered us a full fee place whereas T gave us a very good fee-reduction offer! Funny, as I felt that the at the W interview we received so much positive feedback about DSs exam results and that he is in consideration for a scholarship speech!

pooziepuzzle · 14/02/2014 14:01

Was also told my DS scored very highly on all papers. I feel let down after being led to believe a good offer would be made

AliceLostinWonderland · 14/02/2014 14:04

poozie I know how you feel. Does this mean you have a full fee offer?
Did you apply to any grammars?
