Anyone still out there?!

We are turning down 10% all rounder scholarship at W. It just wasn't enough to turn down DC but very nice self esteem booster for DS.

ATrueBeliever · 03/03/2014 11:54

It is very weird turning down very good schools - I almost want to apologise to the schools. Does Mrs Steptoe have the greatest number of rejection letters to write?! Am interested to see what the state school offered will be. Bored with waiting now. Ds is ready to leave his primary school. To be honest if I told him that he was starting senior school in a week or two he wouldn't mind.

Hi all , nervous today ...it is either Dulwich College with 10% or the grammar option ...gut feel if it's Wilson's or St Os we go GS .....really hard though because I love Dulwich , the head , school , ethos , buildings. But 17 k after tax a year is a huge family sacrifice ....

Need this email to turn up

ladymuck · 03/03/2014 12:00

Is there any chance of the grammar results being available online before the email comes?

Especially with no2 child going to secondary school in 2 years

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 03/03/2014 12:11

V late joiner to this thread but for those who have made that final decision, what was it about the school that you chose that swung your decision away from the other schools?

LostinLondon · 03/03/2014 12:25

TroelsNextCampaignManager I think when it boils down to it, we're all choosing the school we feel is most right for our individual DCs. They're all fantastic schools (or they should be the fees they charge!) but our DCs all have different needs and different aims. I have 3 choices for my DS - they're all fab schools and our final choice is completely down to which school best suits him.

woodcote75 · 03/03/2014 12:44

Has anyone had the chaser call from W (10+) yet?

ladydepp · 03/03/2014 12:57

TroelsNextCampaignManager - DS had 4 offers. Our 4th choice got dropped straight away, it was purely a backup. We dropped Whitgift based purely on journey / distance. Then it was down to Alleyn's and Dulwich College. My favourite is Alleyn's but DH and I decided that DC was more suitable for DS as we hope it will be a little more structured, slightly less high powered academic-wise, friends with boys there rave about it and most importantly DS prefers it slightly. It was a difficult choice.

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 03/03/2014 13:21

Thanks, Lost & ladydepp - still mulling here!

MrsSteptoe · 03/03/2014 13:53

TroelsNextCampaignManager - unexpectedly, we had five offers (should have had more faith in DS). Two were of a gentler academic standard (Emanuel and St Benedict's), so we decided to choose from the more academic three. We decided against Alleyn's because we have a gut feeling that a boys' school will suit DS better than a co-ed, and Alleyn's also felt a little "fashionable" - super, but somehow not quite right for DS - I can't quite articulate it. I loved it, but not for him. So we were left with Dulwich College and Trinity School, and DS is still mulling, but I'm certain he's going to go for DC. It's partly about the built environment - he lost his heart to all that red brick and the chestnut trees and conkers on the approach road. For DH and me, we are Londoners and even Croydon is hard for us to get our heads round, even though it's very quick from where we live. Had DS been very musical and very keen (as opposed to reasonably musical and quite enjoying it) I think I'd have pulled harder for Trinity. As it is, I think he'll get quite enough music at Dulwich to keep him happy.

As a footnote, had we not been offered Dulwich, we'd have taken Trinity in preference to Alleyn's.

One of our schools had a trickier commute than the others, and in hindsight we wouldn't have applied if we'd known that the school bus from our area was going to be cancelled. The other two were harder to choose from, but a scholarship swung it.

OP posts:
WalkingThePlank · 03/03/2014 16:06

LadyMuck, which school is cancelling the school bus? I think we are quite close to each other. How did you go about finding out about the bus - since most schools just say what is available at this time. Seems strange to cancel before the next intake have indicated whether they need the bus.

There is a new thread on Mumsnet Local Croydon for those who are applying to state schools as well: local.mumsnet.com/Talk/local_croydon/2014349-Secondary-School-Offer-Day

ladymuck · 03/03/2014 16:12

The Dulwich Foundation schools have cancelled the S2 bus route.

OP posts:
MrsSteptoe · 03/03/2014 16:21

ladymuck Is that a Wimbledon route? If you go to the website, there is no S2 - presumably because they've cancelled it - but there's an S3, which is Wimbledon-based

Somewhat relevant to us as that's where we are likely to relocate to in a year's time or so...

ladymuck · 03/03/2014 16:33

The S2 ran through Croydon and further south. It had run for a number of years so I was used to the service as several children in years above ds had gone on to use it, and we got details in the prospectus etc last year. But last term they announced that it wouldn't continue beyond september 2014. There are alternative routes via public transport, but none which are direct. My experience at secondary school is that an easier commute makes a great deal of difference to overall quality of life...

Still waiting for the formal email but in desperation I have just logged onto the eAdmissions website and the offer details are available... DS has been offered a place at Wilson.

pooziepuzzle · 03/03/2014 17:15

ladymuck · 03/03/2014 17:17

Pozziepuzzle - I had as well but reset password which was almost instant.

EyesWideClosed · 03/03/2014 17:50

Dilemma time, We have to choose between a great offer from T and Wilson's. Appreciate thoughts from those in similar situation.

ladymuck · 03/03/2014 18:00

Am curious to know how many scholarships are being turned down in favour of grammars?

OP posts:
Dibbleofficer · 03/03/2014 18:02

Unbelievable achievement from DS ..offered a place at Wilsons ...extrodinary with the competition

So delighted with him

Tough choices await

Dibbleofficer · 03/03/2014 18:04

Familiar debate on here then DC or Wilson's .....pros and antis apart from 17k
