Anyone still out there?!

OP posts:
dippingbackin · 28/01/2014 19:25

DS got an interview date from KCS today so we still have that to go. I have job interview on same day so quite a fraught week ahead. Roll on the weekend when we are all done.

ipreferletters · 28/01/2014 19:52

Well done! to all DS for being brave and 'go through it', and to DParents for keeping it together ... I cannot believe it is another good two weeks to go.

hi dippingbackin, good to hear that KCS have been in touch with you. I have no particular expectations but I was wondering if anything was actually happening on that front. They probably got through all the 7+, 8+ and 9+, so attacking the 10+ and 11+ now. Good luck to DS and to you, for both interviews ...Thanks

dippingbackin · 28/01/2014 21:17

ipreferletters KCS was actually for 13+ (odds better than at 11+), not sure if anyone has heard about 10+ or 11+. They sent out a detailed timetable letting us all know when to expect e-mails etc..which made dealing with them slightly less stressful.

ipreferletters · 28/01/2014 21:23

Really? I did not receive anything. Will review the correspondence. Bah...

AliceLostinWonderland · 28/01/2014 22:22

dippingbackin Good luck to both of you for your respective interviews. I am sure it will all be smooth sailing.

Yes, after the whirlwind of exams and interviews, it almost feels like the 'calm after the storm'!

dippingbackin · 28/01/2014 22:46

ipreferletters - maybe the info was just for the 13+ candidates. We got a small yellow card with all the relevant dates on it. Perhaps they do that as there are more candidates than at the other ages and it saves them answering endless phone calls.

At Whitgift sport call back yesterday ....how they can make any assessment in 45 in the pouring rain on a rugby pitch in the half dark I don't know. It seemed to me another chance to sell the W facilities and flamingoes to me

LadyMuck · 29/01/2014 08:21

I was surprised that it was an afternoon callback. Good intro to senior school rugby though.

OP posts:
pooziepuzzle · 29/01/2014 08:53

Dibbleofficer I felt that about the football when they had all boys on the pitch at the same time- messy!

pooziepuzzle · 29/01/2014 08:54

Oh but the flamingoes are stunning aren't they?

Croydonmumtods · 29/01/2014 11:38

Re sports callbacks ex head of sports at T told me it takes them under 5 mins to spot potential as they see so many children of all sizes and abilities. W would be the same. The rest of the assessment is about their interaction with other children that they don't know and also how they deal with the cold and the wet. Seems harsh but when standing in a hailstorm watching a football match you begin to understand why they do this!

pooziepuzzle · 29/01/2014 12:18

If those boys are proper football players or rugby players they are more than used to the weather conditions

LostinLondon · 29/01/2014 14:16

Know what you mean about W sports call back yesterday. My DS did the football then the rugby and I couldn't really see how any of the boys stood out from any of the others in either sport. But someone else suggested the coaches already had a very good idea about the boys' abilities from the first assessment so were just double checking yesterday. Hope so because, especially for the rugby, conditions were ridiculous and most boys prob not on top form.

Somelikeithott · 29/01/2014 15:28

Lostinlondon, don't worry, I think it is correct that they have a fair idea. So far with boys that were awarded sports scholarship at 10+ last year, from what I've seen in the term and a half so far they have lived up to expectations. There are a couple of boys that are really good not on a sports scholarship. But I can't say anyone that has one, so far anyway, hasn't deserved it.

I have to say though, I have heard this year ( particularly in11+ group), the competition is very steep, and most talented boys sports wise want whitgift. I heard also in both 11+ and 10+ group, there has been an unprecedented number of sports ( and music), scholarship applications. A number of boys I know who are very good ( county level, cricket and academy footballers), didn't get callbacks, so your DS has done really well.
I also believe they are looking for boys who are well rounded, and not just good at 1 sport.

Somelikeithott · 29/01/2014 15:33

Also a fair few of us felt the same last year about rugby call back, in terms of weather and pitch conditions as well as boys not being on top form. But an older boy I know in the school told me they deliberately pick that pitch to see how the boys cope in those dire conditions. Quite frankly, it's not too far from the reality and represents conditions the boys have to play under now, sometimes.

woodcote75 · 29/01/2014 20:10

re. the sports assessment call backs for W- is this for 10 0r 11+?

pooziepuzzle · 29/01/2014 20:23

We were there yesterday for football 11+ but they had some 10+ boys there too.

pooziepuzzle · 29/01/2014 20:24

I know one 10+ boy who also stayed to do the rugby so obviously mixed age groups there too

woodcote75 · 29/01/2014 20:26

My son did 10+ and went for sports scholarship. Doubt we'll be getting any sort of scholarship if we're lucky enough to get a place as he wasn't called back!

pooziepuzzle · 29/01/2014 20:32

I do know boys who have not had call backs before and got a scholarship. Sometimes they don't need to see a boy twice!

woodcote75 · 29/01/2014 20:38

Fingers crossed then! Thought it would have been the strongest candidates called back?

MrsSteptoe · 29/01/2014 21:07

WIPMOM reminded me that I haven't shared DS's Alleyn's questions, as best I can given his apparent amnesia about the whole event:
In his case, they were mostly what clubs do you do? what are your hobbies? what authors? Which schools have you applied to, and which is your favourite? (I think that's bang out of order for a 10 year old, but maybe that's just me)
And what sports are you looking forward to doing, and what subjects do you like at your current school.
So very standard fare.
Nothing about social awareness.
Oh, and the teacher asked him a maths question, but it was in the context of one of DS's hobbies (how many frames would you need to do to make a Lego stop motion film of a certain length) so I don't know if it was a maths question cunningly disguised, or the interviewer was just a bit opportunist about it because they were discussing Lego stop motion film making!

HTH for somebody!

MrsSteptoe · 29/01/2014 21:08

PS thanks for reminding me, WIPMOM: I have found it an absolute lifeline that other people have generously shared information on this forum Smile

mummyinatizz · 29/01/2014 21:21

woodcote75 we didn't get the call back either, one of our friends had a 10+ rugby call back yesterday, so looks like they are done now.
I'd be happy for any kind of offer.

Teddingtonmum1 · 29/01/2014 21:32
