SAHM or private school for DC(s)

Gatorade · 19/06/2012 14:54

I have a 4 month old DD and I am starting to think about what I want to do in relation to going back to work and future school options (these decisions appear to linked as affordability starts to come into the equation).

We could comfortably afford for me to be a SAHM and send DD to a private school (well pre-school nursery first, but then through the private school system), this again would be ok for a second DC. The difficulty would be if we have more than 2 DCs, if we are lucky enough we would like 3 or 4.

If we were to have 3 DCs I would need to work at least 3 to 4 days a week to ensure that we could maintain our lifestyle (which is quite basic really, we are not extravagant people) and fund the school fees from earned income.

I am not too worried about my own future career, I feel I have achieved what I wanted to in terms of work before I had DD and if I don't have a professional career again in the future (if, for example I take 10+ years out of the workplace) this wouldn't concern me.

So my question, what would be more beneficially to my DD and future children, having a SAHM or going to private school?

So it's not about having a great career after all, it's just another diet fad!

exoticfruits · 27/06/2012 19:31

Xenia always gives me a laugh with some real gems! I find that the best way to keep slim is to go running-not something that you have much time for in a high flying job.

exoticfruits · 27/06/2012 19:33

You don't see many fat runners.(not if they do it regularly and often and long distances)

didofido · 27/06/2012 19:44

sarca -"No obviously not. hmm talk about trying to start rows."

No, not trying to start a row, just pointing out your utterly ludicrous generalisations

Metabilis3 · 27/06/2012 20:03

@exotic think again. I run several times a week. I've completed half marathons. My boss (admittedly a man) has run several full marathons. Most of my colleagues run (including the mums). I don't know ANY SAHM who run though. All the mum runners at my DCs schools are WOHMs

Sarcalogos · 27/06/2012 20:06

Read the thread. They were made in the context of the discussion and actually expanded upon a previous posters generalisation.

I refuse to cover ALL situations and possibilities in every post. Lest I end up upsetting the under-water basket weavers.

Would you like to borrow my grip?

morethanpotatoprints · 27/06/2012 20:19

I don't run because I'm a sahm, i don't need to as I'm so rushed off my feet all day and have no time to sit on my ass, like wohm do. I'm a skinny little thing and men whistle at me as I walk past them. I have the time to look extremely beautiful and the wohm at dds school are positively in awe of me.

fivecandles · 27/06/2012 20:29
Hmm
scottishmummy · 27/06/2012 20:31

no housewife with children at school is rushed off feet
kids at school 8.30 - 330.hee haw to do other than watch loose women

designerbaby · 27/06/2012 20:32

More than... See my (fairly typical) life in a day... I think I've actually sat down (driving aside) for a total of an hour and a half today, while necking caffeine/lunch and presenting. The rest of the time I've been running around like a mad thing. I walk, on average, an hour a day. I'm 2 stone lighter than when I was at home full time, because there are far fewer opportunities to eat, frankly.

When I was home I was always cooking delicious stuff, and then eating it. Grin

That, and finishing off leftover children's food... Which is the easiest way to consume an additional 500+ calories a day without really noticing...

It was in no way compensated for by walks to the common at toddler pace, I can tell you.

Blimey morethan- duck, there's competitive sense of humour failure going on. Combine it with the irony deficiency and you might need to see a fireman by midnight.

conorsrockers · 27/06/2012 20:35
Hmm I clearly shouldn't have left this thread, you guys are having too much fun ....Grin
Sarcalogos · 27/06/2012 20:38

Grin welcome back Conors. It's been so long I can't remember, are we on the same side or not? Wink

Metabilis3 · 27/06/2012 20:40

Nobody whistles at me because I'm ugly as sin :( But I am very thin. Grin

amillionyears · 27/06/2012 20:42

How many children do you have scottishmummy, and what help do you have?
All makes a difference.
Does your DH help with chores for instance.
All makes a difference.
How many hours sleep do you need.
All makes a difference.
What health issues do you have.
All makes a difference.
etc
Everyone is different.
All makes a difference.

scottishmummy · 27/06/2012 20:48

well lets face it you're not going to get answers to that snippy list

FayeGovan · 27/06/2012 20:53

xenia, this is classic

"I don't hate anyone, women, men, even housewives"

pure genius

in second place is Metabilis3 saying she doesn't know any SAHM's who go running....

hilarious

scottishmummy · 27/06/2012 20:57

to op
can you buy in good school catchment, then that at least covers school
is it essential to have private
plenty good state schools but this does increase house prices in immediate vicinity

timetoask · 27/06/2012 20:58

On the fat vs thin debacle, Xenia, i can most certainly confirm that when I was working I didn't have time to go to the gym, most certainly thinner now that I'm not working!

exoticfruits · 27/06/2012 21:02

I would say that it was utterly ridiculous to give a background for female runners - anyone can do it for free. Some work full time, some part time and some don't work at all.

FayeGovan · 27/06/2012 21:11

theres loads of runners round here

but most of them are shoplifters

does that count?

Metabilis3 · 27/06/2012 21:13

@Faye sorry, what's hilarious about that? Most of the women I know work. Most of the women I know are teachers, academics or work for the NHS. O are my colleagues. I only know about 5 SAHM and none of them run. None of them do any exercise actually. I don't think it's hilarious, but it's true.

morethanpotatoprints · 27/06/2012 21:13

Metabilis, you see its the whistling that counts its only sahm that get those.
Please understand I am smiling like mad writing this.

Metabilis3 · 27/06/2012 21:15

@exotic well you were the one who claimed WOHM didn't run. I wouldn't have mentioned the topic if you hadn't. Perhaps you shouldn't have made such a silly comment, hmmm?

designerbaby · 27/06/2012 21:16

I can only imagine two instances where I might be prevailed upon to run:

If someone was chasing me

If I was really really late for something incredibly important.

On both these occasions I would still explore other options first.
