Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

By the way, that's blinis and not bins!Grin

bigcar · 19/01/2011 09:44

tis very nice chez gorgeous, might have to stop longer Grin There's a forgotten login/password thingy on the login page, hopefully they'll send you a reminder. I think most of us would be the same to be told no school available, we'll keep fingers crossed they've sorted all these problems out now, they've had long enough! I'm sure you'll have the strength not to look Wink

OneMoreMum · 19/01/2011 11:03

This is my second year in a row going through this, I worried myself sick last year, eventually got our second choice which has turned out great and got better exam results than first choice school this year so all went well in the end.

This year am hoping to be in with a good chance due to sibling rule but we still come behind all the in-catchment plus this year they have brought in a feeder school preference (also priority over out of catchment) so slightly panicky now.

Not helped by school announcing proudly this week on their website that they've had 700 applications for their 240 spaces..... that includes 2nd and 3rd choices though so am still hopeful all will be ok - fingers crossed!

OneMoreMum · 19/01/2011 11:05

Oh and by the way my email came at 5.30pm on the 1 March last year, letter never arrived at all and I have to request they sent a copy so that I could accept the place.

GORGEOUSX · 19/01/2011 11:29

OneMoreMum Think I'll just jet off somewhere hot end of Feb. and leave DH to deal with it all.

If it makes you feel better we're waiting
to find out about schools which had between 1300 - 1500 applicants and 120 - 180 places(with no sibling rule advantage). Gosh, now that I've seen it in writing I'm loving the local comp.

I'm trying to decide which was/is worse - opening the envelope to discover whether DD had passed the test or opening the envelope to discover the school. Not sure.

It's great to hear about everybody else on here - whenever I raise the dreaded question with DH - "what if she doesn't even get into the local comp?", it's always the same answer -
"I'll worry about that when it happens."

He can't compute in his male brain that my question is actually 'please let's talk about this because I've become obsessed with it all and, do you think I have lost the plot?'Grin

OneMoreMum · 19/01/2011 12:16

I was absolutely queen of the obsessives last year, had been to every school's open day, both independent and state for miles around.

DS1 took an independent entrance test as well as an aptiude test for our first choice state school (specialist technology college so allowed to select small number of kids). Our local state school is really rough and not for us so getting a good place was the difference between having to carry on in the private sector which we really can't afford to do.

In the end, though, the school which seems to be perfect for him was our second choice and we'd only been there once so all that planning and fussing really didn't make any difference!!

We're off on holiday for half term so am going to try not to stress, what else can you do??

OneMoreMum · 19/01/2011 12:17

PS bet hubby does think you've lost the plot, but what can you do - it's our job to worry!!!

GORGEOUSX · 21/01/2011 19:43

Less than 6 weeks to go..... been waiting for so long now, it's going to be very strange Not Waiting.....Darcy-like husband is looking forward to my being present in body AND mind when we ...... and there is much hrumphing when I suggest private school options; I think if we're going to take that route DD may as well board; he protests that he would like to retire before he is 80.

I've got my eye on a very posh school so will have to put Plan B into action:

Withold all sexual favours until March 1st and then................ before you know it she'll be off to Cheltenham Ladies College Wink

bigcar · 24/01/2011 09:39

yep, you would have thought that with it all being computerised now they could have got the notification time down.

miniwedge · 24/01/2011 13:25

I am getting really stressed here.
Dd took the 11+ but I'm doubtful she will get a place as we only entered for two and both had roughly a 1 in 10 chance of a place.
Have put down two local comps, one I really really want but we probably won't get as is very oversubscribed, the other is the best of a bad bunch and I'm not too keen. I am trying to gee myself up for the news that she has got our 4th choice though.

Am avoiding the other parents, some are utterly bonkers. The mad competitiveness is shocking. I have refused to answer any questions about what schools we chose, even dd doesn't really know. All we have said is that we have picked the ones we think are right for dd.

GORGEOUSX · 24/01/2011 14:06

I know what you mean - people can be so insensitive - and yes, it's a jungle out there!

Luckily, all talk about schools stopped after GS results came through round here, so have not had to suffer all that. It's only DH who's having to listen to it all. 5 more weeks.....hope you get a brilliant result on 1st March.

miniwedge · 24/01/2011 16:54

Thank you! Unfortunately we are in Essex and don't get the GS results until march 1st on offer day. Shock

I think the Kent way is much better, at least if you get the results before you have to get your caf in you can make sure you're not "wasting" choices.

GORGEOUSX · 24/01/2011 18:55

Yes, I agree. I'm in Surrey, where it's a bit of a mixture. Some GSs tell you the score, but others just tell you if you've passed or failed; we're also waiting on one GS which we won't know about until 1st March, so you're not alone.

How many choices did you get on the CAF? Round here it's very unfair as some get 6, but some get only 3!

miniwedge · 24/01/2011 20:47

We get 4 choices here, six would be better I think.

Even a pass or fail would be better than the wait. I do think it needs to be more standardised across the country.

Dsd took her 11+ in Kent and it was brilliant to know what schools were feasible.

Surrey sounds fun! What a mishmash!

GORGEOUSX · 25/01/2011 10:53

Yes, I agree, it would be much simpler and kinder to us all, if we all knew our results before filling in the CAF. Don't understand why it hasn't been legislated for.

We're in the fortunate position of having 6 'choices' (not that I could use them all as my choices are the grammar schools and there are 3 of those). I do, however, have friends who could only list 3 schools and so were forced to 'choose' the local comp. over a grammar school.

So, I can't moan too much - at least my DD could try for all 3 grammars. Smile

Less than 5 weeks ........ not that I'm obsessed or anything....[embarrassed]

GORGEOUSX · 25/01/2011 10:54

oops, I mean Blush !

GORGEOUSX · 31/01/2011 09:41

4 more weeks....... Shock

GORGEOUSX · 07/02/2011 20:09

3 more weeks! Shock

oldmum22 · 08/02/2011 16:49

Getting very nervous now.......thinking about brushing up on what happens if we dont get any of our three choices. Any ideas where I would get this info?

GORGEOUSX · 08/02/2011 17:05

Not sure what you mean. If you don't get any of your choices, I imagine you'll get a comprehensive not too far from where you live? Are all your choices GS? Did you visit any comprehensives, or are you thinking of going private? Smile

oldmum22 · 08/02/2011 19:08

No way could we afford to go private, and to be honest I am not sure that our nearest comp is the one for DC. I was thinking what the procedure was if you were offered a school that was not on your list .Do you go ahead and appeal or do you put your name on the continuing interest list for the school you do want? At what stage do uou enter an appeal?

GORGEOUSX · 08/02/2011 19:45

If you go to www.elevenplusexams.co.uk they will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about schools. They will tell you whether or not you should appeal, time-lines, and even what you should say in your appeal. Good Luck and come back and let us know in 3 weeks.

Hopefully you won't need them because you'll get one of your choices. Good Luck! Smile

GORGEOUSX · 08/02/2011 21:24

By the way Oldmum I'd go with you except that I've been banned permanently from their forum, for "using shouty capitals and making pointless remarks to a moderator", so be very careful how you ask your questions IYKWIM Wink

oldmum22 · 09/02/2011 06:42

Thanks for the advice Gorgeousx. I will pop across and do some research. Hopefully, there will be no need for any appeals etc as we will all have got our choices :)

jodee · 09/02/2011 12:45

Signing in here too. Am in Bournemouth but first (extremely popular) choice just out of catchment (in Dorset CC). And second choice also in Dorset. (We only have single sex/grammar/church "choices" haha! in Bournemouth).

I thought we would get an email (as applied online) but have to wait for that letter or result will be online sometime during the day on 2nd March.
