Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

Gosh, I suppose it just makes choosing the exact school that much more difficult earlier on. Although I can see the logistical nightmare if everyone sits on a pool of 5 schools and takes the last minute to decide between them.

GORGEOUSX · 13/02/2011 15:52

Christina I think what's puzzling Willow(correct me if I'm wrong, Willow) is that the rest of the DC around the country, are only offered ONE school by their local authority. How is it that you were given the choice of 2 schools in the offer? Is that something that applies to DC with a statement?

My DD has passed 2, possibly 3 selective schools' entrance exams, but, if she meets the criteria for entrance, she will only be offered one school out of our choices, regardless of how many schools she has passed the criteria for.

willow · 13/02/2011 16:21

Got it in one.

GORGEOUSX · 14/02/2011 09:49

Someone (possibly Christina - apologies if I'm wrong) has posted similar on another forum.

I don't understand why statemented children get a choice of offers.

I understand that the paperwork may take longer, and so the LEA need to know whether the offer is accepted or not, but why should that entail a choice of offer?

Can someone enlighten me, please?

GORGEOUSX · 14/02/2011 09:53

Actually, I don't really understand why the paperwork should take so long - is this due to inefficiency? Shock

CristinaTheAstonishing · 14/02/2011 18:18

Geez, God forbid someone should be happy about their child's achievement (esp. with no bloody tutoring). I haven't posted on another forum about this. I don't know why statemented children get a choice. Given the shit life has thrown at them, it's not a big deal, though, is it? He hasn't had it any easier in terms of exams. And I can guarantee you deafness can be a huge impediement when one of the exams is language based.

I don't know why they find out results earlier either. In the case of one school, though, it was only days before others (something like Friday rather than early the following week,.

DS has turned down Tiffin's Grammar. So there's one more place available to one of yours. The main reason he turned it down is that a big part of the school life is about performing arts (Ds is deaf and these are a bit out of bounds for him) and rugby (DS isn't allowed to play rugby as his skull is more easily damaged as he's had surgery when the cochlear implants were inserted). Perhaps we should have just gone for the league tables performance, but we thought these aspects are important for a child. So he chose Sutton Grammar and I hope he's made a wise choice. Now I'm sorry I posted about the whole damn thing.

GORGEOUSX · 14/02/2011 18:42

Christina My congrats to you are genuine. Your DS has done very well and absolutely deserves his place at Sutton Grammar -no question about it.

It doesn't impact me at all, because I have a DD, so I have no axe to grind.

My Godson is hearing-impaired so I know an awful lot about the difficulties your DS has had to overcome.

I promise you, it was merely a question - I am very surprised, that's all. I simply did not know that statemented children got choices in their offer. That's all. I'm not saying they shouldn't. I just hadn't heard of it.

Please don't be upset - as you've said, this should be a joyous time for you. Smile

Foxinsocks · 14/02/2011 18:44

we didn't have tests

I just have to wait for someone to decide whether we're close enough to the schools we applied to Wink

don't think it makes me any less nervous though!

GORGEOUSX · 14/02/2011 18:47

We're all in the same boat Fox - tests or not. Have a Wine and pull up a chair.

Foxinsocks · 14/02/2011 18:50

congratulations Christina, what fantastic news

Foxinsocks · 14/02/2011 18:53

I think it's wise to let him choose Christina. Those extra curricular activities can really shape your school life so no point him going somewhere where he feels he might have been disadvantaged (even if he wasn't iyswim!).

CristinaTheAstonishing · 14/02/2011 18:53

Gorgeousx - Maybe I took it all the wrong way. Thanks for getting back, though, really appreciated. I've stayed out of the discussions on exams so far as I just got on with it and didn't want to get freaked out by talk of tutoring etc. It sounds like a tough world out there :)

Foxinsocks · 14/02/2011 18:54

I think we got 6 choices but I only listed the nearest 4

I applied online and got a text. Does that mean I'll get a text telling me what the result is?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 14/02/2011 18:55

Thanks, Foxinsocks. I think it's wise, I hope so. He's quite sporty (football, cricket) and it would be upsetting for him, I think, to sit and watch on the side and keep the score for his rugby team because he can't play. We did make enquiries, Tiffin's don't do any other sports instead. I mean properly, where it's proper part of main activities, not a little aside.

Foxinsocks · 14/02/2011 18:57

cricket and football far nicer anyway Wink

GORGEOUSX · 14/02/2011 18:58

Christina You've obviously done the right thing - and I'm so pleased it all worked out for you.

Your DS must be incredibly bright, it's hard enough to pass those entrance exams, but to pass 2 with no tutoring AND cochlear implants is just incredible - You should be very very proud of your DS, and yourself for getting him through it!

GORGEOUSX · 14/02/2011 19:03

Foxinsocks I have no idea - I too signed up for text and on-line, but have lost my password!

If I get a text out of the blue I'll be in a right old state, as I won't have psyched myself up for it! Shock

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 14/02/2011 19:09

Hi, Can I join in? Another one waiting nervously here. We're in Tower Hamlets but have applied for schools in other boroughs.
Had to choose 6 of which 2 had Aptitude tests and auditions and another two had banding assessments.
We've already found out that DD did not get into the school she really wanted (Marylebone) but have decided against telling her until she finds out on 1st March which school she will actually be attendinh (with luck).

Foxinsocks · 14/02/2011 19:11

I think it actually texted my password back to me

but it didn't use the same number as when you registered

so I had to go through months of texts to find it!

I bet I can't get online and then don't get a letter

GORGEOUSX · 14/02/2011 19:12

Take a seat Ghost - I'll just get you a Wine.

Are you going to spend the next 2 weeks telling DD you've got bad vibes about Marylebone? Wink

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 14/02/2011 19:13

I've been spending the last six months saying just that GORGEOUSX Grin

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 14/02/2011 19:13

And thanks for the Wine Here let me get you a refill Wine

GORGEOUSX · 14/02/2011 19:16

Fox LOL! My mobile broke, and a load of messages were wiped out - including the one with password.

I'm hoping to keep my courage up and not even attempt to go on-line; so it's still plan A for me - accosting the Postman on 2nd - unless I get a text!!!!!

Oh my gosh, just gonna pour another Wine

Shock
GORGEOUSX · 14/02/2011 19:19

Thanks Ghost Wine.

I've been doing the same thing and now it might backfire on me, spectacularly, because DD keeps saying that she doesn't want to go there!!!!!

Even though her sister is there, and it's local - eeks. Shock

CristinaTheAstonishing · 14/02/2011 19:20

Forewarning would be good! For one of the schools I got a phone call on my mobile from Kingston Admissions. I'd just finished a clinic in the morning and was switching my mobile back on, I was so confused, I thought they said Kingston Hospital admissions. My first thought was relief DS was OK and not admitted to hospital.

Good luck to all still waiting.
