if you refund all or part of a paypal payment there is no charge at all.

PurpleFrog · 27/07/2012 13:09

In fact, you are also refunded part of your original PayPal payment! Smile

fergoose · 27/07/2012 14:08

you mean the fees not the original payment I guess?

alemci · 27/07/2012 14:13

but they do charge the buyer. someone gave me a partial refund and pay pal took 40p of it. it was under £10.

fergoose · 27/07/2012 14:38

well they didn't give you a partial refund correctly if you got charged - they would have sent the refund as a payment to you, hence the fees. If they had refunded correctly you would not be charged at all.

PurpleFrog · 27/07/2012 14:39

Yes sorry fergoose - I should re-read what I write instead of hitting "Post". Blush You are refunded part of your original PayPal FEES. But it must be done as a partial refund from the original payment for this to happen. If you set it up as a new payment, PayPal will take fees from the payee.

Note that if you do a partial refund the bit on screen/in the e-mail about the fee refund is very confusing - it looks like PayPal has charged again but actually they have refunded - double negatives and all that.

RecursiveMoon · 27/07/2012 19:34

Thanks everyone Smile. I've over-charged a couple of times for postage (and under-charged a couple of times too Grin), so I was thinking about giving a partial refund if postage was >50p less than I charged.

alemci · 29/07/2012 15:24

I may not have charged enough postage for the item i have just sold on ebay. I kept postage low as i thought i would get a good price for the item.

is it reasonable to ask the seller for more towards the postage if the postage exceeds how much i have asked for.

i always keep postage low as i think some people really do overcharge.

fergoose · 29/07/2012 16:29

no you cannot ask the buyer for more postage if you have underestimated the cost.

LineRunnerSpartanNaked · 29/07/2012 17:22

I just swallow the cost if I stuff up and under-charge on postage.

If I inadvertently over-charge, and it's over about 80p-£1, I offer the buyer a refund.

Although looking at the ebay discussion boards, some buyers get worked up over 30p - and they are the ones who mark your stars.

alemci · 29/07/2012 18:13

but then you still have to factor in the packaging and your time and effort.

have you noticed though that some sellers charge a large amount for postage.

I usually am very fair and my items usually start at 99p.

milk · 30/07/2012 06:56

OMG I sold an item that was faulty and said in the listing that it was faulty very very clearly- hence why it was so damn cheap!!! So the bitch paid peanuts for it! Now she is complaining about it!!! Damn it!!! People like her piss me off!!!

milk · 30/07/2012 07:49

So I have given the woman a 1/4 refund. She seemed happy. Will this be the end though :(

alemci · 30/07/2012 09:56

i think the whole thing is a pain. sold an item of furniture very cheaply and then the people didn't turn up to collect it. it is now blocking my hallway.

i am beginning to think i would rather donate the things to charity.

LineRunnerSpartanNaked · 30/07/2012 10:39

Yup, it seems to be a slow and ponderous time of year for ebay. Had my first non-payers, for example.

I have invested some time over the weekend in going through lots of books.

Pile 1: will sell as oddities or rarities for over a tenner.

Pile 2: charity shop.

(By the way does anyone know how to remove red wax crayon from a [rare] paperback cover and inside page..?)

DontEatTheVolesKids · 30/07/2012 12:16

This is indeed slow time of yr.
Good for buyers, mind.
For once i have pleased news :).
I bought a pair of mobile phones on Ebay about 6 months ago for DS1 to use. 10-13 quid BIN, with postage, iirc. Just sold them on for 27 quid! Shock.
Just hope the buyer doesn't mind what complete bricks they are.

RecursiveMoon · 30/07/2012 12:55

Hi all.

I've got to the bottom of my clothes + shoes to eBay pile, and found that even the used but in good condition stuff sold for more than I thought (~£4 / item). I'll wait and see what feedback I get though!

I've been buying a few things for pretty much the first time too. It's great, I've had some lovely bargains. I worry about fake items though, e.g. for Boden children's clothes? Is this a problem, or is it more of an issue for higher priced items? And where do some sellers get their 5x versions of a Boden top if it isn't fake Confused?

alemci · 30/07/2012 15:00

i was really disappointed with my sale of a hoodie from a very good make. someone has done really well. couldn't understand why it went for less than £3. hardly worn and teenage boy age which you don't get a great deal of.

perhaps i should have waited til sep and i was very generous with postage amount so hoping it is not more.

only thing i think is hoping it has gone to someone who is hard up and will appreciate it. she did send me a note saying how pleased she was to have won it.

PurpleFrog · 31/07/2012 12:31

Well, I staggered over the finish-line for a compensatory silver on Sunday night - only a couple of days late! I didn't have a flurry of last-minute bids as I had managed to schedule my listings to end while the nation was busy watching Rebecca Adlington winning her bronze medal. Oops! Grin

I think I'll have a break from listing now until September. I intend to try to get most of the next batch of washing/ironing/photographing/writing all done next month so I am ready to hit the ground running!

RecursiveMoon · 31/07/2012 12:52

Well done purple Smile! I've got a box of things set aside to sell in Autumn too, but I don't think I'll be as organised as you doing all of the hard work now!

PurpleFrog · 31/07/2012 15:01

RecursiveMoon - don't tell anyone, but I have NEVER yet managed to be organised in advance... I am always scrabbling about on the Sunday evening of a free-listing weekend frantically trying to find some vital part of something!

But - I have very good intentions this time! Grin

RecursiveMoon · 31/07/2012 16:35

Grin Oh good, that makes me feel a lot better.
