Inspired by the threads before Christmas, I was hoping we could get another thread going to motivate us as we sell and ask each other questions as we go along.

I am hoping to start selling again once the dc go back to school next week.

Anyone else want to join me?

Scout hello! There will be other free listing weekends so take your time. Personally I would advise starting with something small that you aren't too worried about.

I would list it on Sunday evening as that is when most of the buying goes on.

You can write up your listing and when you get to the scheduling part schedule it for a week later than you want to list it or something like that. Then all you need to do at 8.30 on Sunday night is go in and edit your listing from a scheduled time to a list now option.

Hopefully someone can explain it better than that for you.

So all you need to do just now is take the best photos that you can of the item, look at previous completed listings to get an idea for your start price and write an honest description up of your item. (you will get faster the more you list).

You will also need some scales to weigh your item so you can estimate the postage price. There is a link in that section which gives you an idea what it will cost. I think it is called postage calculator or something like that.

I add about 20 or 30p for packaging costs.

Come on here and ask questions each time you get stuck listing it.

Well, I went up to the loft and stared at the large pile of junk today.

It's a start.....

carrotsandcelery · 06/01/2012 23:47

That is one step in the right direction Cointreau Smile

Grin @ Cointreau

I'm gonna start with the most expensive stuff, and the bigger stuff I think. What really seems to have helped with the last couple of biggies before Xmas was offering free delivery within a certain area, say 5/10 miles plus can cover further for a small fee. Got some good interest plus as a bonus the ones that actually won it came and collected anyway.

Ive got a pc desk (glass), the crib Sad and I think mum might want the running machine going. Plus of course tons of clothes.

Anyone tested the water on snowsuits yet?

ClaimedByMe · 07/01/2012 09:41

Well done cointreau it's a better start than me, I haven't even opened the hatch yet, may go up in the loft today, if I'm not seen on this thread for a few days send out a search party.......

Jump in IwishIwasmoreorganised - just put one little thing on and see what happens Smile

I am considering starting with brand new in box stuff eg Christmas gifts the dcs got that they already have but which we have no receipts for. I might put them on at buy it now prices that more or less match the shop prices and see what happens. I have Playmobil sets, Lego sets and a pair of black sheepskin Ugg style boots. Hopefully that will make a good start to the pot (although the dcs will get the money for them not me as they were their gifts)

I also have a pair of red Converse that dh wants to sell. Do you think this is the season or should I wait until Spring with them?

carrotsandcelery · 07/01/2012 11:20

Of course I need to find my camera cable or I can't do anything Shock

I sold my first thing! A little bundle of baby clothes for £15 - am so pleased. First lesson learned is that I shouldve added money to go towards cost of packaging Blush

It says on the invoice section to add detailed instructions to buyer, but I've no idea what I'm supposed to write.

Heh, I am crap Grin

PollyMorfic · 07/01/2012 12:41

You've done well! Baby clothes often don't sell well at all, so that's a good result. Re the packaging, you can save used padded or envelopes or plastic mailing bags. Thick plain plastic bags from shops can be good too, if you turn inside out to hide any printing. Or you can get special delivery mailing bags from the PO (the non-prepaid ones, obv) and turn them inside out. There's really no reason to spend significant amounts of money on packaging. I get dh to save used jiffy bags from work, for eg, or they are often offered on freecycle/freegle. Ditto bubblewrap.

Smile
carrotsandcelery · 07/01/2012 16:43

Well done, especially on baby clothes. You are clearly doing a lot right!

If you are planning to sell a lot of items it might be worth buying a package of plain mailing bags from ebay.

I started to do this and it saved a lot of time and money parceling up packages.

I add about 20 or 30p to the postage cost to cover packaging.

Are bundles of baby/childrens clothes the best way to sell them?

How on earth do you work out the p+p for something like that?

carrotsandcelery · 07/01/2012 20:08

MyOhMyOh It all looks fine to me. I think it is because the bundles are of NEW clothes. They will always fetch a higher price. I think there is also possibly less for sale just now so all the interest is on a smaller selection. Just sit back and enjoy My.

OP posts:
MyOhMyOh · 07/01/2012 20:36

Oh ta, worry over! I'm just sorting through some used stuff now so will prob find there's no interest in the next lot Grin

carrotsandcelery · 07/01/2012 20:42

Have you any bigger label stuff? I think if you can mention Gap or Mini Boden or Osh Kosh etc in the title it pops up in searches more and creates more interest.

OP posts:
MyOhMyOh · 07/01/2012 20:55

No, nothing that fancy! Think will put some bundles of nice used dresses up next and maybe wash & iron the more boring stuff and donate to a womens refuge or charity shop. I hate throwing stuff away if someone else can use it.

While searching through the loft though I found a Coast camisole top with the £65 label still on, a couple of swimming costumes with the lables still on and a Principles suit I wore once for an interview.

Disclaimer: I may be developing an ebay habit.

carrotsandcelery · 07/01/2012 21:03

It is addictive MyOh.

Have a look at bundles that have sold already (completed listings) and see what they had on offer and what they sold for.

Have taken photos and am ready to go what is the best time of day to list items ?

roguepixie · 08/01/2012 12:04

I don't know if there is a best time of day. I only know that Thursdays and Sundays are known to be the best days for listings to end!!

I am set up for the day - surrounded by stuff to Ebay in the living room!!! That's my day sorted then Grin.

McPhee · 08/01/2012 12:17

Please may I join you?

I've now been procrastinating over my shite goods for weeks. Now I'm expecting, it really is time to get my arse in gear and get shot of some Blush

It'll probably be next weekend now until I get properly sorted. I was in Hospital at the beginning of the week so I'm still meant to be resting up. However, I can spend some time today sorting out the wardrobe for a start.

Hopefully this thread might give me the motivation I need Grin

carrotsandcelery · 08/01/2012 13:31

onadifferentplanet the previous thread found that the best times were Sunday and Monday evenings, after 8ish.

I haven't tried the Thursday evening theory out yet.

Basically you want to maximise your chances of people being free to sit at the laptop and bid silly amounts on your item.

If people want to link to their items they might get some advice or sales from others on the thread.

I don't link I am afraid as I would be easily identifiable from my ebay account and rejoice in my annonymity on here Grin

I have listed 5 big items, scheduled, so I can start them for real this evening. They are all duplicate Christmas gifts or gifts which didn't fit but we can't return so they are all nice items. Fingers crossed they will all sell. As they are new items I have put them all on as Buy It Now through the Advanced Selling option and recorded delivery postage.

How is everyone else getting on?

OP posts:
CointreauVersial · 08/01/2012 16:23

All set and ready to start listing - hoorah!

I dug about in the loft and found a box of stuff that I had already photographed and weighed before getting sidetracked and shoving the box back into the loft untouched some weeks later.

So it's in front of me, and I'm going to try and list a few things! Mainly kids clothes (dressing gowns and hoodys), but a few bits from my wardrobe too.

I seem to remember last time trying to use TurboLister, but I couldn't get it to work, so I'll try listing individually. Baby steps, baby steps........

roguepixie · 08/01/2012 17:18

Right...most of the stuff on now, thank the Lord. I have a crick in my neck from sitting at the laptop for most of the day Confused.

Just want to add some dvd's now ...

Must give turbolister a try????
