Worried about Drumcree

I feel like an interloper here and apologies if this isnt in the right place.

im really worried about the decision over Drumcree and I can’t see it ending well today either way.

I have no time for Jamie Bryson or Carla Lockhart and it seems that tensions have been stoked on both sides.

My parents (and one set of grandparents) were a mixed marriage - my mum and dad moved to England in the 1960s, and my granny and grandpa moved back in the late 70s/80s once they retired. Im aware I don’t have enough if a real understanding, but I have enough to be worried.

again, im sorry if this is the wrong place or offensive.

@alexdgr8 that is literally the same question we are all asking. Whomever actually did approve this is going to be a very much wanted to speak to person going forward.

@Fredflinstoneswife1could you just explain
to me why? Why this road? Why can they not go through a different route? Why can the people of GR not be left in peace. Remember Carla Lockhart in Scarva a few months ago? Does the same sentiment not apply to nationalist areas?

I'm pretending nothing... let's not pretend any other group did as much harm and took anywhere near as many lives as the murderous ira.

Depends on when you start counting.

“Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.”

We will never have this in NI as long as rediculous
people like Carla Lockhart and Jaime Bryson are given any credibility

The six counties are British soil. Those coming up from the south are from another country with their own rules and money etc. You may not like it, but that is the legal case.

The 6 counties are partitioned Irish soil.

Eg I entered your garden, settled then later put up a wee border & said "mine now".

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 17:51

Carla Lockhart looks like she can haunt people in real time.

Dinosaurs is right. One of the younger Lodge men was talking about his right to ' walk the Queen's highway '. Still , he's only living in 2022. That's progress of sorts

He probably meant Mary II

celticnations · 27/09/2026 17:55

Kinda surreal how the Union of Crowns emboldened James 6th/1st to take on the Border Reivers & deliver the choice of death, military service or exile to Ireland to hold "his" Kingdom has all coalesced once again in this moment in time to Drumcree. Again.

Pinkies crossed. Let's not go back.

Have you never read the Good Friday Agreement?

The 'six counties' are disputed territory. There is no democratic basis for the existence of NI, given that the vast majority of the people of Ireland voted unequivocally for an independent and united Ireland in the General Election of 1918, but that clear election result was not respected by a minority of the electorate.

The referendum on the GFA meant that the majority of people in Ireland accepted that NI, albeit an undemocratic entity, would stay in the UK for now, until a majority there no longer supported that union.

In return, it was recognised that a large portion of the residents of NI consider themselves Irish, wish to be Irish citizens, are entitled to Irish passports, and should be allowed to do so.

So the six counties are not 'British soil', they are Irish soil, under the jurisdiction of the UK, for now.

Margaret Thatcher once said that NI was 'as British as Finchley,' causing someone to remark that if that's what she truly believed, she must never have been to Northern Ireland, or never to Finchley!

This is why there will never be peace. Calling people who have lived in a place for centuries and literally built the whole infrastructure ‘squatters’ is hateful. It’s the irony that the two communities have more in common with each other than Ireland or mainland UK but will never be allowed to come together as so many people like you are invested in division.

I agree, why are they insisting on returning to the Garvaghy Road, having managed OK without it for 28 years?

And the fact that they were told that it is legal for them to do so is no reason to actually do so, against the wishes of the residents - as Edmund Burke said

It is not what a lawyer tells me I may do; but what humanity, reason and justice tell me I ought to do.

No it is your friends there sitting in a church hall wanting to flounce down a road upsetting the peace that are trying to once again cause division.

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 18:09

It is only legal also because of some very dubious persons ruling at 2.30 this morning. More has to be looked into with that person. Very very suspect that it was approved at all but at that hour of the morning even more so. Morally corrupt shower of shites and while I had no respect for the orange order to start with I now have complete and utter revulsion.

I think if you go back and look at the context of the 'squatters' comment, it was about the occupation of Ulster by illegal settlers from elsewhere, not their descendants.
It's no fault of anybody where they are born, even if their ancestors were invaders and 'squatters' on land stolen from an ethnically-cleansed local population, like in Northern Ireland.
That's where they were born, that's where they live, that's where their home is, and that's fine.

But when the settlers refuse to integrate and don't respect the local population and their culture AND their descendants continue that lack of integration and respect - the Orange Order is a good example of that - they are a block to peace and prosperity.

At least the Israelis have an actual historical connection to the place, that's their place of origin, which can't be said about the British in NI.

I feel so sad reading comments from people like @havingdoubtsnowand @Fredflinstoneswife1who continue to blindly spew DUP rhetoric whether they admit it or not. There is no explanation about why they have to walk down this road - why? There are countless other routes to take. This is senseless. As is the continued support for a party (Al be that a dwindling minority now) who have spent decades preaching one thing then doing their own bidding the next minute. This is Trumpian politics- deflect attention from the shit show that is unionism at present. Sadly members of the local press such as McBride are hell bent on vilifying anyone who stand up against the DUP.
every one of the 35 orange men is old. I can only take some comfort that this anti Catholic establishment is dwindling and the wee men in their orange collars will all dye out soon.

favouriteflowers · 27/09/2026 18:22

@MarieDeGournaythe whole of unionism
os built on hypocrisy- look at their senior members race riots in Glengormley in May. Your comment is thought provoking. It’s just unfortunate that the people who are standing up for this behaviour don’t have the thought part of their brain switched on!

DoubleShotEspresso · 27/09/2026 18:24

Fredflinstoneswife1 · 27/09/2026 15:30

Or how about allow them the freedom in their own land to parade when they are LEGALLY allowed to parade, and don't kick up a fuss about it? They were literally just planning to march, without even a band accompanying them. They usually have a band when parading, but decided against making a load of noise.

You are massively oversimplifying things here.
23 we’re murdered.

10 Catholic churches were set on fire.

Do you remember the school
children being escorted by military and riot police just to get to school & still getting bombed?

There are plenty of us who do remember this sickening bunch of thugs.

Any notion you have that they are an innocent group just wanting to match is beyond deluded.

This is inflammatory and after nearly 3 decades a stupid idea that will end any chance of peace in Ireland.

The same loyalists claimed in July to police their intent to “kill a Catholic a day” until they’ve been permitted to March on this one very contentious road.

Let’s not pretend this is a community event, it’s a blatant act of thuggery.

They can literally March home in another direction, why do you believe specifically this road has been banned for 28 years? And why do you think this bunch of idiots have bussed in hoarded of folks in balaclavas? Hint, it’s not for a peaceful night out.

The High Court seriously needs to explain this decision, it’ll haunt us all for years.

hafig · 27/09/2026 18:25

Yes, seeing Loyalist rioters and their defenders complaining about foreigners taking over and bringing their violent foreign ways to Northern Ireland would have been funny had it not been for the scores of terrified people they burnt out of their homes.
Not big on self awareness, are they?

They show themselves for what they are in their posts. Racist and sectarian with a want for division and hate. Note how the other posters focus is on not wanting to return to violence but all they care about is being able to put down the other side and be triumphant

Fredflinstoneswife1 · 27/09/2026 18:50

MarieDeGournay · 27/09/2026 17:30

Doesn't that depend on when you start the body count?

You can't, in all seriousness, if you've ever read a book on Irish history, not be aware of the centuries of genocidal [using the current definition of the term] ethnic cleansing, especially in the plantation of Ulster - how else to make room for all the Scottish and English settlers?

There would be no IRA at all if the British hadn't colonised and brutalised Ireland.

Of course the people descended from the illegal Scottish and English settlers are welcome in Ireland - indeed many of them played important roles in the struggle for Irish independence - the current generations didn't ask to be born in Ireland rather than where their ancestors came from, they just are and that's fine.

However, there is an issue with people coming in great numbers to a different country, and not respecting the local culture, not integrating, not learning the local language, even trying to impose their culture, their religion, their laws on the local population.

That's what happened in Ireland. We have a small cohort of people on the island of Ireland who have never integrated, never respected the local culture, never learnt the language, violently imposed their culture, their laws, their religion, and some of them are trying to march down the Garvaghy Road.

Are you aware that the gaels were pushed out of Antrim... how far back do you want to go? Are you next going to argue that you are descended from Abel and have beef with the descendents of Cain? You and your kin are the dinosaurs who will not move forward and northern ireland will, until the end, be stuck in this mess. Says a lot when you have to hark back to days outside of living memory for every single person living on the island.

The fact stands that the most damage in the past 30 years was done by nationalists. I hope they repent of it as I would not like to be them in eternity.

JaneJeffer · 27/09/2026 18:55

So you think this march going ahead will save their souls?
