Worried about Drumcree

Dogdogdogdig · 27/09/2026 07:03

I feel like an interloper here and apologies if this isnt in the right place.

im really worried about the decision over Drumcree and I can’t see it ending well today either way.

I have no time for Jamie Bryson or Carla Lockhart and it seems that tensions have been stoked on both sides.

My parents (and one set of grandparents) were a mixed marriage - my mum and dad moved to England in the 1960s, and my granny and grandpa moved back in the late 70s/80s once they retired. Im aware I don’t have enough if a real understanding, but I have enough to be worried.

again, im sorry if this is the wrong place or offensive.

Am I right in thinking that this is now a catch 22? It can only be called off if there's a risk of serious disorder but it's a peaceful protest so it's just really a standoff at the minute?

Exactly. No one wins.

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 12:14

Unless the orange ones decide to remove themselves then it will not end well. Currently they are being fed and are dry and comfortable so they are in no rush but if they do not back down then god knows how long it will go on for. Never ever should have been approved. Shocking decision.

favouriteflowers · 27/09/2026 12:44

Things are going from Bad to worse in Portadown. Loyalists are gathering in numbers in an
attempt to wak ahead of the Orange men. Seems they are showing Carla and Jamie to be the incompetent Idiots they really are. I hope for all concerned this stays peaceful and the nationalists stay safe.

bigkey2020 · 27/09/2026 12:53

I have a different take on this to most nationalists
Let them march, their time is almost up anyway. There is a Catholic/Nationalist majority now & our First Minister is Republican too. A UI will soon be on the cards.

I very much doubt if ROI would vote for a UI tbh. Why would they take on board all that madness? Add in that the NI economy is a total basket case, and what about NHS, oh and I forgot - which flag would be used in a UI? That's only the tip of the iceberg, add in the extreme cost of levelling both jurisdictions and I reckon most in ROI would run a mile.

You'll always get the diehards, but most people just want to eat, sleep, work, live and get on with their lives. Not this.

favouriteflowers · 27/09/2026 13:23

It’s deflection. Where are all the other Unionists politicians - hiding behind side this is just an embarrassment

Why there? Why now after 28 years? That is what the rest of us cannot understand. This is bringing us all back years and no I do not see a UI in my lifetime, I reckon maybe a referendum in my kids but that is it. We cannot afford NI to be honest but this is not fair and to be quite honest fuck them and fuck ANYONE who agrees with them. You do not get to march just because you feel like it. Bullying tactics, intimidation tactics - loyalists doing what they do bloody best.

pelara · 27/09/2026 14:31

Their ultimate aim is Direct Rule again. And it just might happen soon.

Then the other side will go mad.

Honestly, WTF? But I reckon most people in NI just want a peaceful life, it's unfortunately the extremists on both sides that foment this hatred of each other.

I would not like to live anywhere near the Garvaghy Road right now.

And there is still a bloody big Peace Wall in Belfast. I mean come on, is that normal for a big city?

I really hope for a peaceful resolution to this.

And next up is Donaldson's sentencing. What side was he on again?

I agree with much of what you say, but in fairness, not wanting a sectarian organisation to march down your road again, having been banned from so doing for years, isn't an extremist position.

Sometimes it's true that 'both sides are as bad as each other', but every situation is different, and in this case I think most fair-minded people would agree that it's indefensible to force a sectarian march down a majority Catholic road against the wishes of the locals, who are the people who just want a peaceful life, and had it, up to the other day and the incredible decision of the Parades Commission.

100% agree.

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 14:43

The parades commission which was selected by the British secretary of state.

pelara · 27/09/2026 14:44

I do agree that the GR residents are right to be raging and disappointed about the Parades Commission decision. Everything was fine for many years, but now BAM, and here we go again.

My issue is that extremists will hijack this and it will kick off with riots, balaclavas, the works. Unfortunately I believe many among them are just waiting for an excuse.

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 14:52

Of course the extremists will kick off sure they live for this shit but it still stands had the orange order NOT wanted to parade themselves none of this would be happening. Any blood is shed the blood is on THEIR hands.

Something that's very striking is the lack of ballaclavas and yobbo behaviour all too often seen at the most recent loyalist gatherings. I hope it stays that way though. There's always some on each side

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 15:03

We can only hope because if it turns nasty it is NOT because of the protesters. This should never ever have been approved. Im so angry today.

MILLYmo0se · 27/09/2026 15:19

MarieDeGournay · 27/09/2026 10:49

I couldn't believe my ears and eyes when I heard that the parade had been give the go-ahead, after 28 years.

And I remembered as favouriteflowers did the outbreak of anti-Catholic violence that resulted from the local resistance to the march - I've heard the figure of 21 people killed, I can't vouch for that, but how can anyone forget the fate of Richard Quinn, 11, Mark Quinn, 9, and Jason Quinn, 7, burnt to death in their beds because their mother was a Catholic in a Protestant area?

I say 'how can anyone forget?' but it's amazing how few people know about that particular atrocity.

Since we have posters on here who may not know all the background, it's worth reading up about the Orange Order, where it comes from, what it stands for, and why having it marching [and Orange parades are militaristic in style] through predominantly Catholic areas.

The Orange Order grew out of anti-Catholicism, and despite efforts to re-frame it as just a social club, and the Twelfth of July parades as a cross between the Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the Notting Hill Carnival, just without the dress sense and the good music, any public manifestation by the Orange Order carries with it centuries of anti-Catholicism, and by extension, anti-Irishism.

Historically in Ireland, 'Catholic' as a label is interchangeable with ethnicity/nationality, even though many nationalist heroes were Protestant, and even though many Catholic heroes were agnostic. It was never literally about the doctrines of Christianity, but the fact that the native Irish did not change religion during the Reformation, and the English and Scottish settlers who were sent in to replace the Irish very aggressively manifested the Protestant religion as one aspect of their superiority over the inferior Irish.

As a result, being Catholic was a clear way to assert that you were Irish not English or Scottish, and crushing the resistance of the Irish to colonisation by the British meant crushing the Catholic religion as well.

That' where the Orange Order comes in. One of the early members, William Blacker promised

“driving from this quarter of the county the entire of its Roman Catholic population”
with the result that the local British Governor Lord Gosford reported:
‘It is no secret that a persecution is now raging in this country… the only crime is… profession of the Roman Catholic faith. Lawless banditti have constituted themselves judges… and the sentence they have denounced… is nothing less than a confiscation of all property, and an immediate banishment’.

That's the baggage that would be carried down the Garvaghy Road -
'Croppies lie down'

I acknowledge that others may have a different take on the Orange Order and I have tried to be factual and fair, but am open to challenge of course!

And many frame the Quinn arson attack as due to a drug deal fallout between their uncle and the one man convicted. That may well be the reason theirs was the Catholic home chosen when those evil men that lit the fire decided they were going to burn Catholics out, but doesn't change the fact that they died because of sectarian violence.
I actually can't believe its back to this, I'm having flashbacks of being in a phone box in the Holylands telling my mammy all was grand when all you could see was black smoke from burning vehicles, and helicopters overhead, and roaring and bangs from blockages streets away, or working one side of a river and thinking how will I get home if they shut the bridge......I feel so sorry for the people that having grown up through it all woke up this morning to find it starting all over again

Or how about allow them the freedom in their own land to parade when they are LEGALLY allowed to parade, and don't kick up a fuss about it? They were literally just planning to march, without even a band accompanying them. They usually have a band when parading, but decided against making a load of noise.

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 15:31

Plenty has changed since the peace process do not be ridiculous and no they should NOT try parade their shite down that road just to fluff out their feathers and try the usual bullyboy tactics. These are not my words but a copy and pasted comment on a page I follow today -

The timing of the decision by the Parades Commission to allow the Orange Order to march down Garvaghy Road is suspect.
For 28 years, the Parades Commission has prevented the Orange Order from marching along Garvaghy Road.
Now, after 30 years of relative peace, and as momentum builds for a united Ireland, all of a sudden this provocation is given backing by a committee selected by the British Secretary of State.
Nobody in Ireland, not even in the six counties, voted for this person, and nobody here selected this committee.
But it has given its backing to the reopening of unhealed wounds and to inflaming tensions.
The march is a celebration of domination. Of supremacy. It is sectarian. It is fascist. And it is currently supported by the institutions of Britain at the expense of the nationalist community in the North, and by extension, the unionist community too.
But we know the history of the British state and its collusion with loyalists in inciting violence, intimidation and hatred on this island. Those in their cosy and safe little worlds risk dragging us back to more dangerous times.
Support the Garvaghy Road residents and join them today if you can. Many haven’t been able to leave the road since this was announced and are exhausted due to lack of sleep. The more people down there, the safer we all are.

Their own land? No no their STOLEN land. Our 6 counties were stolen and no they shouldnt need to bloody parade around at all let alone in that place on this day. Go away with yourself.

These incidents have happened on both sides for decades, let's not pretend that's its one side committing the violence and atrocities
What was the unlawfulness re the Comissions decision, I know all 6 members didn't sign the paper although all 6 agreed with the decision, but its hard to find articles on the exact nature re overturning it all

pelara · 27/09/2026 15:53

I suppose there's a vague to no chance (but I could be surprised!) that the Parades Commission would agree to be interviewed (or their spokesperson) to outline their thinking about their decision.

Any chance, or is it just the SoS for NI who will speak for them since AFAIK he appointed them.

I thought its supposed to be a shared country for.. everyone? As the muslim-loving 'there was no alternative' Michelle O'Neil likes to claim 😆 And stolen.. stolen from who? You must mean from the gaels and the kingdom of Dalriada.

I'm pretending nothing... let's not pretend any other group did as much harm and took anywhere near as many lives as the murderous ira.

pelara · 27/09/2026 16:07

In my dreams I saw a wall around the border, Loyalists/Unionists only in the North. No nationalists, since Britain and Ireland paid for them to move to the Republic and live there on a fully funded resettlement program.

NI stays in UK with Brexit, no dual passports either. Tear up the Good Friday Agreement, not needed anymore - they have NI to themselves, the nationalists have a great life in booming Ireland.

Then I woke up.
