Worried about Drumcree

I feel like an interloper here and apologies if this isnt in the right place.

im really worried about the decision over Drumcree and I can’t see it ending well today either way.

I have no time for Jamie Bryson or Carla Lockhart and it seems that tensions have been stoked on both sides.

My parents (and one set of grandparents) were a mixed marriage - my mum and dad moved to England in the 1960s, and my granny and grandpa moved back in the late 70s/80s once they retired. Im aware I don’t have enough if a real understanding, but I have enough to be worried.

again, im sorry if this is the wrong place or offensive.

It isn't that they can only walk down this road now, is it? It's that they should not be stopped from walking it. And that they should never have been stopped from doing so.

Some here also think that bombing and burning children alive is fine too it seems, make of that what you will- utterly sickening and depressing .

Why not?

No I think it is morally wrong for it to go ahead. But lawfully it has been verified as legal.

The same cannot be said about the protest which is illegally infringing on the rights imposed by the courts to allow it to go ahead.

I can’t see a good outcome for either side on this one.

But can you understand the protest at all?

You don’t remember 1997 then?

That and this today is the very definition of blatant thuggery & pure hatred.
Let’s stop pretending these 35 men don’t bear ill. They are pondlife scum who would kill you, your granny and then reverse just make sure.
This is likely a setback Portadown will never recover from, there had been glimmers of hope, but not now.
There are umpteen public roads these Eejits coukd walk down, why exactly do you suppose this one is of such importance to them?

The answer is simple , they want triumph where they already sowed tragedy.

The scum would be the murderers, don't be a revisionist. Orange men are peaceful and law abiding. That's why the nationalists are raging, because the orange men took the peaceful approach to being blocked from their route and went through the courts. They were patient and disciplined and have done LOTS for cross communities in the years since. They took the right course and were vindicated. Republicans who have no shame about shedding the blood of innocent people are raging that the orange men were vindicated. For years the Orange order have been principled and are slandered by the nationalist and left leaning media, whatever they do.

WantALieDown · 27/09/2026 20:08

So sad to be dragged back to the violence of the late 90s. To bring all of this up again is cynical in the extreme. WTF are parades commission doing.

Honestly I do. But at 0800 on a Sunday morning I wouldn’t notice 35 men walking silently by my house or in the neighbouring streets. They have come in their hundreds, perhaps thousands solely to be offended. It’s like the shop fronts at Ardoyne. The Spanish boy that seriously injured a female police officer by lobbing a brick on her head from a height. Why was he there?

I do digress so apologies.

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 19:46

The fact they go after this one road year after year after the peace process is the most telling thing. If they did not continue to apply for approval and left things alone none of this would have happened. It is the sheer audacity.

Completely agree!

Nobody who wants peace would be pushing for this march 😕
Surely you know that.

I’m not sure the Orange Order bombed and burnt children alive. I think you’re confusing them with the IRA. Many of which are standing on the Garvaghy Road right now.

JaneJeffer · 27/09/2026 20:14

If I looked out my window and saw 35 men marching past I would be very scared

The determination was for silence. No bands, no supporters. It’s was to be a silent procession.

@Fredflinstoneswife1you aren’t really answering the question. If someone asks you a question you don’t like you can’t just change the question. I want to know why this road? Why can’t they go a different way. Despite being an anti Catholic organisation they claim to be Christian so why insist on marching through an area where they aren’t wanted. Why?

Or how about allow them the freedom in their own land to parade when they are LEGALLY allowed to parade, and don't kick up a fuss about it? They were literally just planning to march, without even a band accompanying them. They usually have a band when parading, but decided against making a load of noise.

Get a grip!!!

It’s a traditional route they have followed from 1807 when it was historically an agricultural area.

Brainstorm23 · 27/09/2026 20:19

The Orange Order is a cross community organisation? I've heard it all now. Why the SoS wasn't in Belfast this morning instead of Liverpool is beyond me. Also he says he was no power to stop the parade unless asked by the Chief Constable. That's not true. He has the power as set out at https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/2/section/11

Re: Carla Lockhart every time I see her I'm reminded of what Roald Dahl said in The Twits

If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it. A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.

Public Processions (Northern Ireland) Act 1998

An Act to amend the law relating to public processions in Northern Ireland; to provide for the establishment and functions of the Parades Commission for Northern Ireland; and for connected purposes.

Because it’s ridiculous. They aren’t doing any harm, they are just asking down a public road. Do you have a fear of people in general?

Yes, I see that. Harkening back hundreds of years to try to justify their wickedness.

The more pertinent history connected to portadown in that regard would probably be the murder of 100+ Protestants who were bayonetted and drowned in the River Bann at Portadown in 1641. Read up on Eleanor Price who was imprisoned, tortured and whose 5 children were murdered.

This can all be read online along with the accounts of hundreds more in the '1641 depositions' made public by Trinity college.

I will teach my children the past, and I will teach them to love their enemy because the past is the past. But republicans teach their children that they are to seek revenge for historical killings from wrongdoings hundreds of years ago.

Northern ireland is a small place. My family members have had to live side by side with people who have murdered our loved ones and have never received justice for it. But they did not retaliate. They prayed for those who persecuted them. And I am not talking about persecution that happened hundreds of years ago to ancestors, I am talking about the slaying of loved ones whose murders and other threats caused by the IRA in their ethnic cleansing of the border counties completely terrorised them. These are things which have left them with PTSD to this day - it does not lessen with time. But they did not seek an eye for an eye, they sought to be forgiving and to pray for those who killed and harmed.

Well, it's a residential area now, and the families there deserve to live in peace.

That's what this protest is about.

favouriteflowers · 27/09/2026 20:21

@hafigit doesn’t take a genius to realise that this one march sets a precedent and before we know it there will be 3500 loyalist thugs marching up the road with their kick the pope bands frightening catholics and non catholics.

It really annoys me when people stoop to attack a woman because of how she looks.

Like her or loathe her, don’t lower yourself to comment on her appearance.

Be an example for your children instead of being a downright cruel bully.

It was loyalist paramilitaries, the UVF, in the particular case being referred to.
