Worried about Drumcree

I feel like an interloper here and apologies if this isnt in the right place.

im really worried about the decision over Drumcree and I can’t see it ending well today either way.

I have no time for Jamie Bryson or Carla Lockhart and it seems that tensions have been stoked on both sides.

My parents (and one set of grandparents) were a mixed marriage - my mum and dad moved to England in the 1960s, and my granny and grandpa moved back in the late 70s/80s once they retired. Im aware I don’t have enough if a real understanding, but I have enough to be worried.

again, im sorry if this is the wrong place or offensive.

That sounds like a very very scary nightmare you had for sure.

And many frame the Quinn arson attack as due to a drug deal fallout between their uncle and the one man convicted. That may well be the reason theirs was the Catholic home chosen when those evil men that lit the fire decided they were going to burn Catholics out, but doesn't change the fact that they died because of sectarian violence.
I actually can't believe its back to this, I'm having flashbacks of being in a phone box in the Holylands telling my mammy all was grand when all you could see was black smoke from burning vehicles, and helicopters overhead, and roaring and bangs from blockages streets away, or working one side of a river and thinking how will I get home if they shut the bridge......I feel so sorry for the people that having grown up through it all woke up this morning to find it starting all over again

Your post brings back really strong memories. I was living in digs in the Holylands a few decades ago when this all kicked off the last time and it was nerve-wracking. Like you, I was lying to my ones at home and telling them everything was fine, lying and telling them the things on the telly weren't happening near me, when in reality I couldn't sleep because of the stress and the noise.

And when we were blocked in by the peelers, because of what was happening on the Ormeau Road, it meant staying in the Holylands streets most of the day with no opportunity to get out to shop for food or anything else that you needed.

I don't want NI going back to those days.

Even if there isnt a UI we still have a majority which will grow and grow as the dinosaurs die out. Let them have their last hurrah.

notskinnyyetffs · 27/09/2026 16:21

Meanwhile, a couple of miles up the road life goes on as normal. Lovely walk, a craft fair and about to take big DS into belfast to meet up with friends. For the majority life goes on. But every single one of us will pay the price for this shit show. Stormont will collapse - this is now a certainty. 30 years of hard work and peace building gone because a handful of dick heads want to march in an area no one wants them, and another handful of dickheads refuse to engage in discussion about it. No winners at all. A shocking lack of foresight from so called political leaders. And don’t get me started on the unelected agitator at the heart of this - Jamie Bryson

I see Gerry Adams has entered the Big Brother house, he's just arrived at GR. Will that help or hinder I wonder?

@notskinnyyetffs Great post and spot on. I hope your life stays peaceful.

Abhannmor · 27/09/2026 16:36

Dinosaurs is right. One of the younger Lodge men was talking about his right to ' walk the Queen's highway '. Still , he's only living in 2022. That's progress of sorts

Fredflinstoneswife1 · 27/09/2026 15:30

Or how about allow them the freedom in their own land to parade when they are LEGALLY allowed to parade, and don't kick up a fuss about it? They were literally just planning to march, without even a band accompanying them. They usually have a band when parading, but decided against making a load of noise.

They wanted a big parade with bands at 2pm the same as they have asked for for the last 30 years. They were given a silent parade with 30 people at 8am by the Parades Commission in a shock decision.
It was exceptionally poorly done .

celticnations · 27/09/2026 17:05

Bloody stubborn Orangemen 🙄

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 17:09

All they are interested in is getting their own way. Grown men. Enraging.

havingdoubtsnow · 27/09/2026 17:19

If a parade is given legal permission to march, then let them march. You can’t say no just because it’s not your politics. British citizens marching along a British road and Irish people from another country coming in to stop them?

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 17:22

Are you trying for irony here? Cos if so you have nailed it. It has put us back decades this bullshit. Irish people from another country? I just cannot get my head around this at all.

celticnations · 27/09/2026 17:24

@havingdoubtsnow It's not their country. It's historically planted aka stolen land. The Irish are not from another country. But the Planters were.

Shame Wolfe Tone & 1776 failed.

Fredflinstoneswife1 · 27/09/2026 15:56

I'm pretending nothing... let's not pretend any other group did as much harm and took anywhere near as many lives as the murderous ira.

Doesn't that depend on when you start the body count?

You can't, in all seriousness, if you've ever read a book on Irish history, not be aware of the centuries of genocidal [using the current definition of the term] ethnic cleansing, especially in the plantation of Ulster - how else to make room for all the Scottish and English settlers?

There would be no IRA at all if the British hadn't colonised and brutalised Ireland.

Of course the people descended from the illegal Scottish and English settlers are welcome in Ireland - indeed many of them played important roles in the struggle for Irish independence - the current generations didn't ask to be born in Ireland rather than where their ancestors came from, they just are and that's fine.

However, there is an issue with people coming in great numbers to a different country, and not respecting the local culture, not integrating, not learning the local language, even trying to impose their culture, their religion, their laws on the local population.

That's what happened in Ireland. We have a small cohort of people on the island of Ireland who have never integrated, never respected the local culture, never learnt the language, violently imposed their culture, their laws, their religion, and some of them are trying to march down the Garvaghy Road.

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 17:32

@MarieDeGournay absolutely well said, very very well said 👏

You mean 1798? 1776 'succeeded', unless you're Native American.

Just as well this decision wasn't needed before or during the amazing Fleadh in Belfast, when everyone got together including some pipe bands and all was well.

I am also baffled at the Parades Commission decision. I just can't figure it out at all.

This march is so provocative, but I always thought that violence and hatred were just under the surface, held in place tenuously, in wait for a tinder box moment. Well I think this might be it. Hopefully cool heads and good leadership will prevail, but I doubt it will end peacefully, maybe it will today but going forward I see the old arrogance and supremacy not going anywhere any time soon.

Maybe it is a deflection from the imminent sentencing of Donaldson, I am not so sure, but if things kick off, it will take the reporting heat off that for a bit.

I can only say now that the Orange Order and the DUP have done the biggest favour to those who want a United Ireland. Although if I lived in Ireland (ROI), that would be the last thing I'd want. Why would anyone want to import this madness, and all that goes with it too?

Interesting you mention the fleadh. I travelled to it and am not surprised at this turn of events. There was a very expensive veneer of togetherness and unity and happiness but I was shocked at what was happening on social media. The comments against the fleadh and catholics and the Republic showed there's a lot of people who dont buy into the theory we are in a new happy Union.
Add the fleadh as a perceived republican celebration together with recent very public political discussions about reunification of the country and here we are.
What's surprising is how the courts have been so allied to the OO.

celticnations · 27/09/2026 17:34

United Irishmen. Our best hour I think.

The six counties are British soil. Those coming up from the south are from another country with their own rules and money etc. You may not like it, but that is the legal case.

Anonanonanonagain · 27/09/2026 17:38

Wait... people went up there from Cork?

alexdgr8 · 27/09/2026 17:42

I'm in London.
Can anyone explain why was this parade approved initially when it has been banned for 28 years.
Who approved it ?
And why ?
Thanks.

They did in their backsides decide against making a lot of noise. Their original application included 2 bands.

The short answer seems to be a universal 'no, after 28 years of doing things differently, we can't explain this throw-back decision'.
