Hi Craicnetters!

I was looking for the other thread and see it's fallen way down the list so I decided to make a new one for all our daily musings ☘️

I agree with you .
I live in Dublin and it shocks me when I see the speed of motorists on quiet country roads.
There’s a dual carriageway in Dublin and the speed limit is 60kmh. Quite often there are garda speed “traps” on it. Pat Kenny used to rail against it saying it was shooting fish in a barrel and I agree with him as winding country roads at that time had 100kmh speed limits. Daft !
They have now been reduced.
I think Donegal has a particular problem with car accidents. I’d like to know the statistics over a 20 year period.
Is it the roads, the drivers, the cars or a combination of all 3 ?

Border areas for decades had little to no police presence during the Troubles which allowed people to drive badly without fear of being arrested. They were also able to cross the border when being chased by police and escape being caught because there was no cross border cooperation between Gardaí and RUC or between the two legal systems.

Both police presence and cross border agreements have improved the chances of being prosecuted for dangerous driving but so many people still drive like the law doesn’t exist or doesn’t apply to them. And it’s obviously become a generational thing passed down in the culture.
