Sorry to hear of this awful incident, and hopefully all those attacked will be ok. It is said that the incident arose out of a custody issue with a child or children. I don't know, it's only what I read online. The man apprehended was in his 50s so given that the parents of the injured children have been informed, I wonder what his relationship is to the parents/kids. Maybe a grandparent? I dunno.
The worrying thing is the way the riots are unfolding. Police cars on fire, individual police attacked and kicked/beaten. It's dark out there now so it could escalate. Hope all will calm down though.
I agree (as do many many others) that Macker has to go. Hopefully she will resign tonight or tomorrow. Varadker needs to sack her if she doesn't go herself. I was so enraged when she had the nerve to say that Talbot Street (where another awful attack happened recently) and Dublin in general was as safe as houses, all the while she was walking around with five or six police escorts. WTAF? Does she think everyone is stupid or what?
The Garda Commish needs to take control and get the cops out on the streets. Visible policing not reactive policing would help enormously I think. I can't tell you the number of times I have heard that people can walk from Stephen's Green to O'Connell Street and never see a cop EVER.
I don't live in Dublin but am Irish. Hope the kids are ok, I am just so fed up of all the attacks, reaction, inaction and labelling of everyone who has a view as Right Wing. Sure way to shut down discussion, but look what's happening in the Netherlands, and Italy, and France is probably next. I dunno, it's awful really, and seems like the end of an age of innocence or something.
