Why is there such an increase (around the world) of random stabbings and murder of children / innocent people? It's scary. We never used to hear of this did we?

We’ve never gone anywhere at all of course. We Irish like to stay at home and not seek food/shelter/life in another country for centuries.
What age are you roughly? Maybe you don’t remember the mass departures from Ireland in the 50s-mid 90s. Where would we have been had we been rejected from those countries?

anotherside · 23/11/2023 22:18

Now they’ve set a hotel which houses immigrants on fire. Apparently the rioters “have a point” though according to some of the right wing lunatics on here.

Mooshamoo · 23/11/2023 22:18

I think that tensions against foreign nationals are particularly bad in Ireland this week because of the murderer of Ashling Murphy being convicted last week. He was Slovakian and she was Irish.

While I agree that people should be welcome into the country, I also think that people should be able to have a discussion about immigration into Ireland.

Ashling Murphy's boyfriend made some very valid points. That ashlings murderer moved here from slovakia and never worked and then murdered a girl.

After Brexit happened , the UK now do not have to abide by the freedom of movement rule in the EU. People have to apply for a visa to enter the UK and the UK specifies that these people must be educated and must take background checks.

After brexit happened , I did think that all of the people who want to go to the UK from Europe , and now can't, a lot more of these people will come to Ireland instead.

I have had so many conversations with foreigners living in Ireland who said to me "I wanted to go to the UK but it was too hard to get a visa, so I came to Ireland".

It is important to talk about immigration. Other countries have rules about immigration in place. Ireland is small , and is currently letting everyone in from the rest of Europe.

How can freedom of movement in countries in the EU work properly when countries from larger poorer countries in Europe are all coming to Ireland which is wealthier but smaller.

And if we ever leave it's only ever strictly legally, no one Irish has ever overstayed a visa.

And if an Irish person did ever happen to commit a crime in England, we would've been TOOOOOTALLY fine with the English rioting to get rid of all the Irish. We really should all be lumped together and judged on each other's crimes.

northernstars · 23/11/2023 22:23

Drove home over the Samuel Beckett Bridge. Had the windows closed but you could still smell the acrid air.

AInightingale · 23/11/2023 22:24

I think Ireland would actually have been a better place if it hadn't lost generations of young people and their talents, and would not have become so depopulated. Politicians like to point to the south and west of Ireland when justifying mass immigration, and have explicitly stated that they want to increase or double the population of those counties within a couple of decades. It's a massive experiment in social engineering, but most of the new arrivals are coming from countries whose values and cultures are going to prove incompatible with ours. And those countries in their turn will suffer population depletion as Ireland did.

One of the reasons Brexit happened is because England was suffering from the "freedom of movement" rule by being a member of the EU. All of the people from the poorer countries in the EU, were moving to the wealthiest country in the EU, one of which was the UK. The UK were not benefitting from this rule in anyway.

The minute Brexit happened, I felt that this would have a knock on effect on Ireland. All the people from the poorer countries of the EU, will still want to come to the richesr country of the EU, which is now Ireland. The UK has left the EU, so all the EU peoplr cannot go there anymore, they are choosing to come to Ireland.

The freedom of movement rule in the EU is not well thought out in any way, in my opinion. It's ridiculous.

For a start, Ireland is much smaller country than many other countries in the EU, so if everybody wants to come here, we will be swamped.

I agree with the UK, in that we should do more checks on people coming into Ireland , and we should not take absolutely everybody in. We should have some say on who comes in.

I'd hazard a guess that there are far more Irish immigrants in Europe, America and Australia, etc than there are non Irish living here

But I disagree that checking people coming into the country is racist.

Many countries have checks. For many countries you need a visa.

My Irish friend just applied for a permanent visa for Canada. He was given more points for how well educated he was and for how well he would add to the Canadian workforce.

Holiday Inn is on fire

Houses many immigrants

I feel so sick 😞🤬🤬

anotherside · 23/11/2023 22:30

@Mooshamoo

Support for the EU in Ireland is at 88% so virtually the whole of Ireland disagrees with you.

How is this happening

That mentality does exist though as in lumping all together. I was frequently asked in London if I was an IRA supporter (I wasn’t obviously). And my uncle who travelled frequently between Dublin & London was pulled aside most trips.

3luckystars · 23/11/2023 22:32

Those poor little children.

This riot has been brewing for a long time. The atmosphere in Dublin is menacing and threatening for the last 6 years.

Because they know where their bread is buttered.

I know it exists. And it's something Irish people are hyper aware of and call out at any opportunity (me included).

To do the same about immigrants in Ireland is utterly shameful. We know the pain it causes.

Loulou599 · 23/11/2023 22:35

you seem to forget that people who left Ireland really didn't have a choice.

migration has always happened... its just happening at higher levels now because we have 7 billion people in the world with a most of the resources concentrated in a few areas.

Loulou599 · 23/11/2023 22:40

I don't think the English ever set fire to cars and attacked public service aid staff because one Irish dude stabbed somebody somewhere.

I'm actually shocked by the scenes from Ireland. You should come and live in France, you would be rioting evey week if this is all it takes...

rideashitehorse · 23/11/2023 22:42

I can't believe the rioters are Irish. They must be English out to cause trouble (maybe bussed in via ferry?) No real Irish person would be racist or anti-immigration.

Where has anyone said that?

We've pointed out that it's completely hypocritical for Irish people to be against immigration. Those rioting tonight are scum, seemingly completely unaware of their own history.

FirstFallopians · 23/11/2023 22:48

My thoughts are with the gardai out tonight. They went to work this morning maybe expecting to deal with the effects of the Christmas shopping period starting, not a full scale riot.

Are the force actually capable of getting this under control? Either in terms of adequate training or numbers?

If you knew anything about Ireland and it's history you'd know that it's been non-stop rebellions and up-risings for a thousand years.
