Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

Chickenkeev · 22/07/2023 19:48

Has anyone mentioned Supermacs? (especially at two in the morning after the club and before you try and get a taxi!)

doodles55 · 22/07/2023 19:50

Benediction

doodles55 · 22/07/2023 19:53

With cheese .

FadedRed · 22/07/2023 20:09

I remember getting HB choc ice lollies in the (late) 1950’s!
Being called ‘bold’ when I was naughty - I didn’t understand what was meant by that to begin with.
This photo was was taken a couple of weeks ago in a Morrison’s in the English Midlands, unfortunately not my local, but near enough to drive to on occasion. (This is out me if my DD is on MN), might have to change my username. I will name the location if you cross my palm with silver…

Chickenkeev · 22/07/2023 20:16

Is 'bold' not a thing in the UK?

No it isn't. And cute doesn't mean sly and clever in the UK. Just pretty.

I liked Benediction. Incense and singing. Not as stressful as Mass ?

LMNT · 22/07/2023 20:28

@FadedRed ooooo they have MINT CRISP!!

My DH and DD think I’m a weirdo because I love mint and chocolate together.

Ill take a viscount over any other biscuits.

FadedRed · 22/07/2023 20:30

@Chickenkeev & @UnsungShero - Nordic Tayto is like half a loaf - loads betters than the alternative of of ‘No Tayto’ 😂

FadedRed · 22/07/2023 20:30

*Nordie

Shopgirl1 · 22/07/2023 20:30

Shopgirl1 · 22/07/2023 20:32

The night of my wedding we left the reception at the end of the night and went to Supermac's Eyre Square for a Supermac meal.

Shopgirl1 · 22/07/2023 20:36

No, bold is only used in Ireland to mean naughty and we don’t really say naughty…

Shopgirl1 · 22/07/2023 20:36

How has no one mentioned Bosco?

Or Dustin the turkey?

tothesea · 22/07/2023 20:39

Re the taking the skin off tatties

Where do you come from?
Donegal
How are the tatties?
Brave and small
How do you eat them?
Skin and all
Do ye no choke!
Nat at all!!

A rhyme we said all the time as children. Does anyone else know it?

Shopgirl1 · 22/07/2023 20:39

Interesting! I'm always amazed that we're so close but so different. But i suppose the same is true of our own regional dialects. Didn't know about cute either!

Tayto is a hill i will die on! Our Tayto are the best. We used to make a pilgrimage (jfc i can't spell that word!) to the irish shop when i lived in france just for the tayto. And sometimes the rashers 🥰
