Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

At the risk of having my passport cancelled : is boxty another name for colcannon or are they quite different?

They’re quite different!
Boxty is a pancake type of thing made from grated raw potato, with some mashed potato in the mix too I think.

Colcannon has cabbage in it. Champ has scallions but isn't fried. Although my mother in law would be liable to fry it.

My dad always has boxty on Halloween he's a Leitrim man so not sure if it was a tradition there. Never questioned it as a child just one of those things Halloween= boxty, Christmas= Turkey

Ive had champ with parsley the odd time when we couldn't get scallions. My wee nanny always had parsley in a jug on the windowsill. If there was any left she fried it the next day with a bit of bacon. My uncle had a pig farm we ate a lot of pork ...
