Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

@Kettering I was eating them too in Ireland, but I'm not Irish, I lived in England - hence I never saw them where I lived. They were a treat when I went to visit the rellies!

@Shopgirl1 I really dislike Magnums generally. I don't get the Hype, the icecream is meh!

The phrase 'sorry for your troubles' at a funeral. The first time I used it here in Scotland at a funeral I think I might have offended the bereaved.
It's a great phrase at home- everyone says it, everyone knows what it means. You don't have to think of anything else to say if you feel awkward.

We're used to hearing it here, but if you weren't, it almost sounds sarcastic!

Mantillas

I remember visiting my Granny in Ireland and her being shocked that I didn’t have a mantilla or a single long sleeved dress for mass 🕯

Oh and watching fascinated as my two young female cousins were strapped into ‘liberty bodices. ‘

This might make me old 😉

Chickenkeev · 22/07/2023 17:26

I had to google mantilla!

Asking where something missing might be and being told it’s up in Nellie’s room behind the wallpaper.

Nash's Red Lemonade
Kimberley Biscuits
Tayto Crisps Grin

LadyEloise1 · 22/07/2023 17:44

The Kimberley biscuits of my childhood had a lot more chocolate on them than they do now ☹️

The Kimberleys I remember were two gingery biscuits with white marshmallow in the middle. The chocolate ones are new invention!

You're obviously a young one then @LadyEloise1! Chocolate Kimberleys weren't really a thing until the 90s.

The ride

Chickenkeev · 22/07/2023 18:17

Anyone remember the Time bar? Yellow wrapper, tooth breaker.

doodles55 · 22/07/2023 18:18

The less than the ride

My granny on mother's side worked in Jacobs biscuit factory off St. Stephen's Green at Bishop Street. That was between the wars (yep I'm a fossil). We did some research and Jacobs supplied us with lots of information about her time there. It was fascinating.

Jacobs in Bishop Street was seized by the Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising, but the rebels soon left as most of the people in the surrounding tenements actually worked in the biscuit factory. Not good PR!

Banjaxed

Actually appears fairly regularly in the Times codeword puzzle

@Curioushorse ah I'm so pleased that it's a Cavan thing. MIL probably left over 50 years ago but bought land a few years ago and they built a wee house. We're off there next week!

Mashed boiled egg with butter - my husband eats this (and now the kids) he always called it eggy cup 🤢

In Finney haddock a thing also? MIL always called smoked haddock that but I'd never heard it before.

Also don't know if it's just an expat thing but the potato obsession - having a fave type and bringing them back for the other Irish (quite a contingent here in Leeds) but also the shame. DH said his dad would alway hide the pot of someone knocked on the door at dinner time.

Again, I may be showing my Englishness here, serving the spuds steamed in the skins with a side plate to skin and mash your own with loads of Irish butter. I found this very odd the first time.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned the Rose of Tralee. It’s so uniquely Irish, it couldn’t happen anywhere else!

The ROT has gone to pot - transwomen are now allowed and that clown, DOS is welcoming them with open arms - hopefully the ROT committees around the world can tell a woman from a man. It's mortifying to contemplate

I know one of these lovely ladies!

Dáithí Ó Sé says a transgender Rose of Tralee contestant would be 'a fantastic thing'

Daíthí believes the Rose of Tralee has already stood the test of time, and is a good indication of the shape of Irish society in 2022.

You SO don’t understand the Irish use of “so” 😂

YY! My dad (who was a complete culchie) loved them. He also was known to eat raw onion 🤢

LMNT · 22/07/2023 18:32

@Pigriver eggy cup is a staple in this house Grin
