Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

I think condolences to the family covers things?

'I'm sorry for your troubles' covers all eventualities.

That's fine if you meet the bereaved person...but it doesn't seem to work on rip.ie.
Death notices in the Belfast Telegraph often had a nice poem...my mil loves reading Death notices.

The fella who does the obits on our local website is usually very kind and thoughtful in his little pen portraits. But he has his ways. He might say the deceased was ' a well known local character '. Or ' a great fund of stories'. This means he was fond of the cratur and told a rake of lies and bullshit. Or ' she brought a lot of joy into peoples lives'. She was stone mad but a nice ould misfortune in other words.

I love death notices in local papers, they are an art form, beautifully phrased.. Like you say, Abhannmor, 'economical with the facts' but sure no harm in that, in the circumstancesSmile

Yes @eggandonion
Tragically I get, but unexpectedly and suddenly I’m just not sure of when I read them.
