Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

The obsession with www.rip.ie - does any other country even HAVE a database of everyone who's died on any given day? It's kinda like social media for older people to go check out what their friends are up to! 😆

RIP.ie - most recent death notices | rip.ie

Discover the most recent death notices from Ireland. A reliable source to be informed of the passing of those close to you.

RocketPanda · 21/07/2023 11:24

Sudocrem. For everything!

Marmite27 · 21/07/2023 11:37

I’m from Yorkshire, my parents-in-law are Irish, it always astounds me how many things are common in both places.

My MIL is forever explaining things that are perfectly ordinary to me and saying you might not know it this way because this is how we do it at home Grin

Funerals
Wake in the house with the deceased lookin at ya
Funeral receptions

An Irish wedding. Can't be beaten. Sing song at 4am in the residents bar
Three day event weddings

First Communions and a bouncy castle

Slap up fry in a B+B "down the country"

Weather talk, it's endless

Great neighbours (mostly)

There are so many and most of them are great.

It's a good way for employers to check if the funeral the employee said they were going to really happened ;)

I wonder if the creators of rip.ie are millionaires? They should franchise it out to other countries. It's brilliant

LMNT · 21/07/2023 17:04

Being asked three times before accepting a beverage or other food stuff 😁

Leaving someone’s house with more than you arrived with - again food wise

I'd similar except my postman is my neighbour and I'd told him I was away but on my letter it said there's a package in the shed next to Harry Potter books Grin

Neighbours knowing you are 'home on holiday' 30 seconds after you arrive and turning up to see you.
Giving your children - that they have never met before - money.
Brennans bread - so soft that all but the softest butter would tear it apart.
Telling you about people - whom you have never met - dying/illnesses in great detail.
Red lemonade.
A startling devotion to Padre Pio.

Child of Prague in the garden to bring good weather.

Sending your teens away for 3 weeks every summer to meet the opposite sex ( aka practice Irish).

Also checked daily by politicians to see which funerals to make an appearance at.

The national ploughing championships. The brown bread making competition. The serious discussion re tea do you drink Lyons or Barry’s.

LMNT · 21/07/2023 18:00

@Nongatron there’s no discussion … It’s Barry’s or nothing 😂😂

Jaywalking. Or maybe more a Dublin thing. It cracks me up in the summertime to go into the city centre, watching tourists obediently waiting for the green man while the locals are ducking and diving through the moving traffic!

Izzadoraduncancan · 21/07/2023 18:07

Cidona, sugar sandwiches, hot red lemonade. Admiring how well the deceased looks at the wake.
Wouldn't raise my kids anywhere else

Moomindroll · 21/07/2023 18:08

I look at it everyday, just to check if I'm still alive!

The elusive green man. People usually wait until the sheer press of humanity on the pavement behind them cannot be borne any longer. Then follows a surge across the road such that only the most deranged motorist will risk their car against this tonnage of flesh!

Of course the lights don't work. They are just a placebo. Like the rear door on the bus....

I’m a Londoner with Irish parents. Went ‘home’ every summer for the six week holiday. This has given me so much nostalgia Grin.

LadyEloise1 · 21/07/2023 18:30

The rural politicians don't just look at RIP.ie.
They sympathise on the site.
Particularly if the deceased has any Kerry connection I'm looking at you Healy Raes !

Nongatron · 21/07/2023 18:30

@LMNT of course!! Barry’s Gold is the best 😊

LooseInTheCity · 21/07/2023 18:32

My phone calls to my Dad still mainly exist of him telling me who died this week (that I don’t know). I also get a list of who has cancer, usually ‘a cousin of his’. And a weather report (usually ‘lashing down’).

He also does the ‘bye bye bye bye bye…’ thing.

happyasaseagullstealingchips · 21/07/2023 18:32

Hot brown lemonade 🤮 for colds

My wee Mammy and daddy even if you're in your mind forties.

The North and South Debate about which Tayto is better (non I prefer Kings 😆).
