A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

Your granny putting several different choking hazards in the Halloween brack.
Ignoring all fire alarms.
The piss taking if you wear anything different (there is a twitter thread somewhere)- I wore a cream teddy coat on a freezing day and senior lad at work called me a Womble..
The national friendly piss take of Teresa Mannion when she was dramatically reporting in the rain, and within 24 hours her report had been re mixed with a beat and pipped for Eurovision. Nowhere else would that happen :)
That would be an ecumenical matter.
Feck it.

Teresa Mannion was class altogether, i was in Dublin but i totally got it ( and wondered why the fuck she was on the prom in that weather!)

Scallions, the best.
Turnip as a Jack O lantern at Halloween instead of a pumpkin.
Putting a candle in the window for someone you love on the night actually before Halloween.
Divil O bother.
My dad said biscakes, pretty close to Cavan. And well hai.
Idin and idout ( inside and outside)
An phoblact and hearing all the old stories. The shock.

Orders76 · 23/07/2023 00:50

We still reference don't take unnecessary journeys.

@FadedRed ooooo they have MINT CRISP!!

My DH and DD think I’m a weirdo because I love mint and chocolate together.

Ill take a viscount over any other biscuits.

Ooooh mint crisps and macaroon bars (the old ones)

Orders76 · 23/07/2023 00:53

Howaya Marion!

LMNT · 23/07/2023 05:53

@Chickenkeev I live in France and there is a company called Bacon By The Box. They do fresh food like Clonakilty sausages and Kerrygold and dry staples too like tea and biscuits. It’s brilliant!!

Teresa Mannion is a national treasure Grin

How has no one mentioned Bosco?

Yeah! One of my lads did a bit of work for the Bosco lady. Still out there!

Shame RTE closed the children's programmes down. About the only thing they were really good at? Used to love watching the Den in the 90s with the kids. We had a ' Talking Millennium Dustin' which another poster mentioned - the dog got it 😂.

Wanderley Wagon was kind of strange and surreal for a kids show. There's bits on YouTube.
I remember the lovely HB choc ice. All I missed in England was Club Orange , Tayto , Kimberly biscuits and Kerrs Pinks.

Just noticed something weird : a hoor - cute or otherwise - is invariably a man. A dodgy woman would be called ' a weapon '. And I've heard bold girls called a 'rip' bit not boys? Maybe different in other counties. I'm in langer land.

Rockbird · 23/07/2023 07:55

@Dublincailin FIZZLESTICKS!!!! No one ever remembers them and I'd started to think I'd dreamed them.

And tipsy cake. Where has the tipsy cake gone? 😭

LadyEloise1 · 23/07/2023 09:37

I remember yummy Fizzlesticks

VaddaABeetch · 23/07/2023 09:52

She’s a wagon, very hard to explain.

I see it’s happened on this thread, trying to work a connection with somebody new you meet. Your hairdressers sister sat beside their cousin all through primary.

bunchofboys · 23/07/2023 10:08

My mum was irish, - we used to go home in the summer, hours saying goodbye, old men and women with few teeth (distant relatives) giving you money (always notes) - literally remeber being on the ferry aged 9 with a wad of money 😂. Tayto. 4 of us sleeping innthe same bed. Whole holidays spent visiting people. Taking photos all standing solomnly around gravestones of those distant past. Stopping off for a hot toddy. My aunt cooking soda bread. Cousins telling you secrets about people that you eeally shoulsn't know!!

The best was my mum abandoning her english accent though!!! Everyone was an eejit. Jesus, Mary and Joseph frequently called upon whenever anything went wrong. My mum would literally give someone her dinner off her plate!

Weddings, - everyone up singing including the bride and even the oldies still going at 4am.

When i was older and finding out I had a boyfriend - "does he have land"!

Thanks for the thread - happy happy memories

Gur cake

Pigriver · 23/07/2023 11:03

Kerr pinks! Yes those are the tatties always brought back. Van loads 🤣 We even grow then at our allotment here in Leeds.
Club orange - more sugar than any other sift drink!
Also this is going to out the location.....Pan Boxty. God I love that stuff!

Bold, yes heard that for the first time recently. Thankfully not in relation to my own kids!

Gwan yer boi-ya!

Pan boxty plus the lump of boxty is now sold throughout Ireland in recent years. I have a few packets of it in my fridge, never had it until I joined Slimming World.

FadedRed · 22/07/2023 20:31

@LMNT - YES! And Tiffin - haven’t seen that for decades.

I’ve got 3 bars of Cadburys Irish Tiffin in my cupboard. Someone brought them over for my MIL, but she doesn’t like it.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/07/2023 11:25

How has no one mentioned The Late Late Show? Especially the toy show. I couldn't imagine it on BBC1 on prime time Friday night TV 😂

The Late Late is the most bizarre mixture of the least sexy/conservative chat show, Saturday night giveaways and Question Time.

Litany of the Saints after a rosary

Garda Patrol - "two youths were apprehended" from a serving Garda with a strong rural accent.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 23/07/2023 11:27

Has anyone mentioned the sacred heart candle/light up on the wall? Not creepy at all as a child 👀

We were always “bold” as kids as well.

Dublincailin · 23/07/2023 11:28

@Rockbird

Fizzlesticks were my absolute favourite. 3pence each I think.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 23/07/2023 11:29

The other thing that always fascinated me as a youngster was how almost every death on the road seemed to make the national evening news. Maybe not so common now as population has grown.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 23/07/2023 11:29

And the drink-driving ads in Ireland are brutal.

Dublincailin · 23/07/2023 11:31

Did anyone mention coddle?

LMNT · 23/07/2023 11:32

Glenroe on a Sunday night giving the back to school dreads!

Also see Peig for the dreads 🥴

Crisp sandwiches (we were strictly a Taytos house) and warm Cadet orange.

Dublincailin · 23/07/2023 11:34

@DontBeAPrickDarren

There was a sacred heart picture in the grans bedroom

It terrified me, hated been sent up to get something from the bedroom.

Still creepy now, and still wonder how anyone could sleep in the same room as that picture
