Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

I love “hoor” to mean someone who is very fond of something.

He’s an awful hoor for the wimmin.

I’m a hoor for Taytos.

Cute hoor is the best. So descriptive.

I have the video somewhere with Dustin and Niall Quinn as Mr.X.

Pretty sure if I searched enough I'd find his single with Joe Dolan you're such a darned ugly turkey 😆

Does anyone else remember the pig on the Den with the high pitched voice Snotter I think. Then there was Socky the sock monster I had a cat names after him.

Was it snottser/snottsie?

A roo from Cork?
I am a roo?
Do ye ate potatoes
Of course I do!
And how d'ye ate them?
Skin and all
And do they choke you
not atall!

(Had to be said in v exaggerated Cork accent)

So must be a regional variant

That is interesting! My Papa was from Donegal so that’ll be why we had that version. My Dad does the skinning potato on separate plate with butter thing…me I eat them skin and all! And no I dont choke!

I absolutely abhor up for the match 🤐

Chickenkeev · 22/07/2023 22:19

And while we're at it, i can't stand des cahill! Not rational, no actual reason but he drives me mad! It was awkward when i ended up having pints with his nephews once, it was all i could do to keep my trap shut.

It's naff but I'm only interested in winning the prize while watching Love Island Unseen Bits on my laptop 😂

I abhor GAA 😶

I’m from a very GAA-centric county and have never once been to a match.

I've been to a few matches and i played when i was a kid. But it never took hold. I'd be much more interested in football (sitting here in a 90's man united jersey).

Absolutely revealing my regional roots here but Tanora, and spiced beef at Christmas. Tanora doesn’t taste the same anymore so tend towards a rock shandy instead now. We have a spiced beef smuggled over to us every Christmas.

Our local (English) Tesco used to sell golden crisp until Brexit but no longer. Sad times. We have to rely on someone bringing a box back with them after a visit now.

Snotser! He was so annoying. As was Sockie.

WaveyGodshawk · 22/07/2023 22:48

We have a Dustin toy that still says his catch phrases when you press him. He must be nearly 30 years old

"Have ye seen me mates Snotser, sockie and Zuppie"
"I'll be round to do that job on Tuesday missus
But I won't say which Tuesday whua whua whua"

Dublincailin · 22/07/2023 22:48

Once we hit January "There's a grand stretch in the evening"

The big one, had a different name before. Lump of vanilla ice cream on a stick.

Fizzle sticks

Can only eat new or baby potatoes with the skin on, other potatoes have to be peeled and mashed!
No choking here either 😂

We always said the rhyme Red Sky at night, shepards delight, red sky in morning shepherds warning.
My granny was from a farming family which I think is why we said shepherds. Most people round where I live now say Sailors warning (we live near the sea)

msmonstera · 22/07/2023 22:58

Your granny putting several different choking hazards in the Halloween brack.
Ignoring all fire alarms.
The piss taking if you wear anything different (there is a twitter thread somewhere)- I wore a cream teddy coat on a freezing day and senior lad at work called me a Womble..
The national friendly piss take of Teresa Mannion when she was dramatically reporting in the rain, and within 24 hours her report had been re mixed with a beat and pipped for Eurovision. Nowhere else would that happen :)
That would be an ecumenical matter.
Feck it.

Sorry, I thought you were asking.

Is this an Irish not leaving the office for the random fire test?
