Gender critical in Ireland

Muppetryofthepenis · 11/06/2022 16:57

Just wondering if there are many others out there. Was reading a political pamphlet and it was going on about self ID and how important it is. I just don't agree and think it's so damaging to change the definition of what a woman is. And the definition of a man too, I guess. Sex based rights are under threat in Ireland. Fed up with all the nonsense. Wondering what other Irish mumsnetters think.

Who would have thought that the party of Liam Cosgrave and Oliver Flanagan would become so woke.
I wonder if the grass roots members are aware of changes that have been made without public discussion ?

Disclaimer - I am a member of no political party. I am a floating voter, influenced to vote for an individual politician based on their ideology etc.

I abhorred what happened during and after the Celtic Tiger Era. I remember thinking at the time that saving the banks / unsecured bond holders yet putting people out of their homes was just asking for trouble. But who'd listen to me ? I'm not an economist or a politician or a policy maker, just a person with a bit of empathy and common sense.
I have seen the fruits of their policiesSad
The despair, the suicides, the broken families.
I am really upset and annoyed by the housing policy of this and the previous government.
This joint government FG, FF and the Green party are doing it again.
And large multinationals are raking it in with their build to lets and a low tax rates. Sad

elgreco · 20/03/2023 12:45

We didn't vote for this.

AncientBallerina · 20/03/2023 12:55

Thanks to those who corrected me on this! How on earth did I get that impression? I will do some research!

Believerinbiology · 20/03/2023 12:56

Are the media here slowly waking up to what parents think? Just saw another article published that questioned pushing these ideas on young children, think it was Eilis O'Hanlon. I know she's written several pieces but it seems media outlets (except RTE) are more and more willing to publish.

Can I ask if all these self I. D kids are referred to a psychologist in the first instance? Still can't believe the govt are entertaining such shit.

From what I can see most psychologists/psychotherapists are gender affirming. Happy to be corrected though! Literally!

Believerinbiology · 20/03/2023 13:00

AncientBallerina you got that impression because TRAs and other countries hold up Ireland as a shining example of progression. I've seen numerous accounts that inaccurately report we voted this in with equal marriage while proclaiming loudly that everything is working out fine here (let's not talk about the men in women's prisons and sports teams...shhh, they are women so it's all ok). Have you read the Dentons report where other countries are advised to copy Ireland by sneaking in legislation without scrutiny by piggybacking on other causes that do have support?

Villagetoraiseachild · 20/03/2023 13:15

Just found this thread and going to read all through later.
Thank you for starting it OP.

Leopardprintonsie · 20/03/2023 13:31

@Villagetoraiseachild I stumbled accross this thread a couple of weeks ago after the govt wanted to introduce trans education (brainwashing) to primary schools. It is such an informative thread & really important to keep it going for all us biological women.

Believerinbiology · 20/03/2023 13:55

For those of you new to the topic and wondering about the impact here in Ireland the Feminism: Sex & Gender board can be useful. The "Break it down for me" thread highlights lots of the issues. It has also been through posters on that board that I became aware of changes been pushed through here under the radar e.g. changes to school toilet regulations.

The Sunday Independent, most notably Eilis O'Hanlon and Mark Tigue have been writing on this topic for a while now.
The Times dipped their toe in the water a couple of years ago, but then pulled away in terror when student unions threatened to boycott the paper. I no longer subscribe, but I think they might have started to realise that it is going away, no matter how hard they look away and become a little bit braver?
Newstalk are pretty good, RTE a complete and total scandalous disgrace. They have been hiding under the bed since Dublin Pride called them transphobic for discussing the topic for 3 days on Liveline last year. Those 3 days were the only time RTE allowed open discussion, after that complete silence.
Even, when the new current affairs programme recently covered the RSE junior the discussion was on the teaching about pornography, not gender identity which was much more controversial.
Everyone on the panel agreed it was important to teach about this pornography.
That was it!
What is even the point of bringing on a panel where they all agree?
No mention of gender identity and how it is being taught as fact, or the fact that thousands of parents took the time to outline their concerns on the issues.
Nothing.
They, RTE, like the politicians, have completely lost touch with the concerns of the general public on this.
Sinn Fein, Labour, PBP, Social Democrats are all as bad though, so things are unlikely to change even after an election.

AncientBallerina unless you were in government you didn't vote for this, none of us did. The second question that day was about lowering the age a presidential candidate can be. Much as some people in other countries may like to say we voted this in, we didn't...unless there has been a collective mass memory loss and removing any record of it.
electionsireland.org/results/referendum/index.cfm

Thanks for that because my memory is not what it was! I was having a wobble there.

No, self ID was sneaked in by an Act , more or less nodded through around the time of Equal Marriage. As per the tactics recommended by Denton. And how well it worked.

I think the difference between Leo and Nicola is this : she has opposition in London. The furore about London over ruling her is what turned a big media spotlight on the Isla Bryson case. Leo doesn't have these problems. Unless Micheál cops on.

It would be good if a Woman's Rights party put the cat among the pigeons. But I fear it's more likely some Peter Casey type far right group will cash in .

I’ve heard of the Denton report describing strategies that can be used to get the legislation in under the radar. I can’t believe I fell for the ‘we voted it in’ false message. It’s even worse than I thought that this was brought in with no consultation.

AncientBallerina · 20/03/2023 14:18

It’s so depressing to see people who you thought were smart so desperately wanting to be progressive that they won’t even allow themselves to think about all of this properly. Strep out of line on this and you are ‘aligning with the far right’.

I think it's a matter of wording. If one is sent for gender affirming care, they're not allowed to question it. They have to affirm it, unless they're ready to be accused of transphobia.

@Abhannmor -that's the one! Jeffrey Marsh - what a waste of air and space! That guy shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a child!

Believerinbiology · 20/03/2023 18:15

That bill was nodded through the dáil discussions and the only dissent seemed to be that it didn't go far enough, with some lamenting that 6 year olds couldn't be issued a grc. Lots of comments from TDs (from all parties) about having spoken to trans organisations and people but no mention at all that I could see that there was any consideration on the impact it would have on others, particularly women and children. The need for a medical professional to sign off on the cert was removed after the bill had passed through the 1st to 3rd stages of the dáil and seanad, by the special sub committee which was then sanctioned by the dáil the day the legislation was passed in July 2015.

It looks like Leo wasn't prepared for this question, and the eye rolling in Michael Martin in the background is something to behold🙄

Mícheál Martin is down with the kidz.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 21/03/2023 19:51

God that eye roll is disgraceful.

But look, it was asked and he answered it correctly! Who'd have thought it?!

This may well get the discussion out into the general public. I've already seen a few comments online questioning if that's actually true and people clearly ignorant of the facts. It's great now that people might finally wake up!

Hopefully I see the the Indo reporting on it now too so fingers crossed it will bring it mainstream.
I think Leo doesn't want to go down the same road as Nicola Sturgeon.

AncientBallerina · 21/03/2023 21:12

This is an interesting development- he came out surprisingly strong, although I don’t believe for a second this was the first he’d heard of the BK case.
As for Mehole…

Oh ffs that's annoying - trying to post the link to the indo article but keeps getting auto hidden. Sorry all.
"Headline is Taoiseach says biological males shouldn't be in women's prisons"
Which is the headline I've been hoping to see for the last few years.
Sunlight is definitely been shone here at last...
