I'm looking forward to the toy show too, Life. It has such a feel-good factor about it. I loved the children on it last year.

It will be interesting to see if they will bring masks into primary schools. My eleven year old wears one along with two/three others in her class. She sees her older siblings wear one in secondary. It might make a difference if everyone wore one. It's certainly better to try and curtail the spread of the virus than letting it run rife around the classroom and then all the disruption that ensues. As you said, Life, it seems stable enough at secondary level. I'm sure there are cases, but relatively few (fingers crossed!)

sillysmiles · 25/11/2021 13:46

I totally agree that NPHET /the gov have lost the people. It's hard to take the finger wagging seriously nearly 2 years later when they've done nothing to build in more capacity into the system.
To continue to try to say that schools are safe is just bare faced lying. And even if it was true (and I don't think it is) they have to data to prove it because of the refusal to track cases in schools.

It seems, separate from the management of the crisis, we have failed to collect data all over the place that could be used either for future applications or retrospectively.

sillysmiles · 25/11/2021 13:46
  • no data to prove that should read
Radyward · 25/11/2021 18:06

I think its nuts to introduce more restrictions / ie blame the public for the hse short comings and govt shortcomings.
i am totally against masks in primary school. The psychological impact on 5 yr olds cant be underestimated.
Youu dont hear of covid cases due to data and gdpr. I do not want my kids to suffer hardship as a consequence of these 73 muppets unvaxxed in icu all over the country. Why when we have played our part be held to some sort of ransom. The vaccine works in that if vaxxed andhave covid the requirement for oxygen i
Just sisnt there in 99% of cases where as with the covid px who are unvaxxed wellthey are struggling on non invasive vents or fully ventilated requiring 3 -4 weeks each in hospital.they need to be called out on their utter stupidity and reckless endangerment . In the uk.news has moved on from covid by and large but here we are like covid hungy crazies blaming all and sundry . Held in complete blind knee bending to nphet our now overlords and masters .its sickening.the govt crazed increasing of restrictions and so many vaccinated that again the majority of which will not need a hosp bed at all if caught. A sense of reason and perspective needs to be applied and the covid hysteria ramped down a notch.

Not sure about kids wearing masks. Would they make that much of a difference when they are sitting in class for hours. They will have to take them off to drink and eat anyway.
I can't wear a mask for hours I can't breathe and I get panicky.
The kids will have a field day making noises behind the mask, the teacher won't know who it is. Grin

Iblinkedandiamold · 25/11/2021 20:20

Also, I got Garth Brooks tickets so I am on a high.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 26/11/2021 11:06

Wow that's an achievement @Iblinkedandiamold! I laughed when I heard that Pearse Doherty said in the Dáil that it's easier to get a ticket to Garth Brooks than it is to get a PCR test Grin

JaneJeffer · 26/11/2021 14:58

It so fecking cold 🥶

TheVeryThing · 26/11/2021 15:42

It's freezing and our boiler is completely fecked!
Congrats on the Garth Brooks tickets, you must be thrilled!

eggandonion · 26/11/2021 19:06

Wearing a mask in work is great. I can mouth abuse at anyone who annoys me. I spend a lot of time muttering silently.

Iblinkedandiamold · 26/11/2021 19:43

Very cold today. My older afterschool children told me they now have to wear masks in School. They were asking if they have wear them in afterschool.
I didn't know what to say. I would imagine no, it can't be good for them wearing a mask all day from 9 to 6? Open to being told it's fine for them. I haven't looked into it.
Now my older afterschoolers are a lovely bunch bug they are pure messers. God help the teacher is all I'll say.

eggandonion · 26/11/2021 20:34

I would wear a mask for that lenth of time coming up to Christmas, but im a grown up!

pembroke488 · 26/11/2021 23:16

We collected dd from Dublin airport today, there was a delay in arrivals in terminal one as one of the escalators airside was broken so all the hundreds of passengers from the many flights coming in were herded into one hallway. She sent me a photo, my first thought was if she didn't have covid already from being in a European city where it's rampant, then there was a pretty good chance of catching it right there.

We bought antigen tests on the way home.

On the bright side there was a 'Love Actually' moment when a couple arrived with their baby, around 3 months old, who had clearly never met their grandparents, aunts and uncles. I may have shed a tear.

halfpasteleven · 27/11/2021 00:49

@pembroke488 that's lovely!
Hope the tests are negative

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 30/11/2021 11:54

How are we all doing today? I have ticked another couple of items off my Christmas list so I'm feeling less stressed about it now, although not looking forward to the wrapping as I'm rubbish at it.

I really hope things calm down/improve over the next couple of weeks. We're planning to spend Christmas with family many counties away and we'll be very disappointed if we can't go and I'll be even more disappointed if I have to buy a turkey etc I still don't really think we'll have a lockdown but my ever-pessimistic DH thinks we will so I'm a teeny bit anxious...

I have no doubt that mask-wearing will be brought in for school kids today, I hope it doesn't officially start till next week as I need to stock up! The disposable ones are way too big to put on a child so I'll have to check the shops for decent small ones. Ideally plain, the DC don't like slogans or cute images etc. Any recommendations?

EmeraldShamrock · 30/11/2021 12:24

Now they've agreed to advise parents on class cases it is non stop reporting.
Primary schools are far worse than secondary, possibly because of masks in secondary school.
Personally I wouldn't mind my DC wearing a mask, they see parents and teachers wearing them regularly.
I put one on my 6 y.o on public transport, stops him touching handrails with his mouth.
It should be optional.

Would pennys have any?

halfpasteleven · 30/11/2021 12:38

@LifeInAHamsterWheel people arriving into Ireland will need a negative covid test from Friday.
I can't see them stopping inter county travel.. but it's early days

LadyEloise1 · 30/11/2021 13:20

This thread was started in early May. It was called "...the Exit"
That was almost 6 months ago.
No sign of the Exit yet. 😩

eggandonion · 30/11/2021 17:51

Our local lidl had lots of kid masks, I think reversible to plain. Im not sure how good they are in terms of preventing transmission, but better than nothing!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 30/11/2021 22:13

Thanks I'll take a look in there 👍🏻

LizzieAnt · 01/12/2021 15:28

You can get small disposable masks for children on Amazon, LifeInAHamsterWheel, if that's any help. Delivery time might be an issue if you need them immediately though.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/12/2021 16:16

Thanks Lizzie I'll have a look. I did get a small one in Dunnes yesterday and we have a couple more at home. I'm just concerned that they'll go missing or get dirty and we don't have enough. A box of disposable ones would be handy (not great for the environment I know but still)

LizzieAnt · 01/12/2021 17:05

I know, we're the same and use a mix. The disposables are a good backup.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 01/12/2021 20:21

My DD (11) uses the kids' ones from Lidl. They fit her well. We have a box of disposables too which we rarely use. The big kids use masks from Dunnes. They are plain black and well made.

Tonight DD was decorating two disposables with a Christmassy theme :)
