Somebody left a Cash Withdrawal receipt sticking out of the ATM in the local Morrisons. £86,398 in their account...

I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

TBH I didn’t see it as lighthearted because of the way it was written.

But I work in the industry and honestly people having this kind of money in their current accounts is more common than people realise. And it’s not all just house deposits or money being moved, some people just don’t want to move money around. Often it’s older generation who have no interest in using digital banking for instance.

I always advise customers that they should think about having that kind of money in a current account, not just because of interest they’re not earning but because of the potential for loss if their card is compromised in any way.

Devondevs · 15/05/2026 12:33

I often leave my receipt at the cash machine, it displays a similar amount in. Partially because I don’t want it, partially because I love the idea of someone seeing it and being jealous. Yes I’m a horrible person.

AgnesX · 15/05/2026 09:42

In their current account? Someone doesn't sound very money savvy which is odd if they have that amount of money. Must be nice not to have to consider these things.

Maybe its a big compo claim that has just been paid and awaiting distribution into higher interest accounts 🤔

Isobel201 · 15/05/2026 12:36

I thought you were going to add on and say the cash was left sticking out of the machine lol

I didn’t read it as lighthearted either

I literally put a laughing emoji in the post.

I personally wouldn't be jealous. I'm happy with my lot even though I'm poor. The only reason I would ever want more money would be to help other people out.

Why would it be such a surprise that I would use a windfall to help other people out? I'm certainly not jealous of people with money. At all. It's their money

I've had a very difficult few years health wise and if I did win money I would use it to help the people who have supported me over the years when I couldn't do much for myself. Id also do what I did the last time I had some spare cash. Help pull some dogs out of kill shelters.

I'm not money orientated -maybe because I don't have much

I know that comment was meant to be funny - but was I supposed to be jealous of someone who just said that they leave their bank statements in the ATM to make poor people jealous?

Why would I care what other people have?

Nobody really cares whether you care or not. This is a meaningless, lighthearted, frivolous Friday afternoon post. Don't overthink it.

I had £100,000 from an inheritance paid into my current account years ago. I had no idea about money and rang my bank immediately to ask what I should do with it

Maybe it's different in the UK, but where I live interest rates are close to 0 so I see no point in having a savings account.

I wonder if OP is a home owner, in which case she may have much more than this person with money in the bank.

Right. I'll opt out then. I was trying to be polite to you then after your cheap dig at me - there's nothing "frivolous" or lighthearted at taking cheap shots at someone and referring to them as "Ghandi" - because they don't want to blow a fortune they don't actually have.

There was no need for that post at me - instead you've doubled down. No one cares. That's good. I don't either.

After I sold my late parents house, temporarily, there was about £150k in my current account.

I'll agree it's rare, but don't assume it's someone mega-wealthy. The extra money in my account was from the sale of the house they'd owned for 50yrs plus savings which had been released following probate.

TheHillIsMine · 15/05/2026 13:16

Why would they want strangers to be envious never mind the fact they won't be around to watch the probable non result? 🙄

We have savings accounts with a higher interest than a current account which is usually near zero %. For that reason many people have a low balance in their current account.

Does it work on cracked rendering on a house? 🤔
