I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

Does it work on cracked rendering on a house? 🤔

My massive house will be as smooth as my forehead.

We have savings accounts with a higher interest than a current account which is usually near zero %. For that reason many people have a low balance in their current account.

The only reason I even bother to keep my money in the bank rather than under the mattress is for safety, although with what happens to banks, I'm not sure how really safe it is.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/05/2026 13:27

DH got a large lump sum when he left the armed forces after 35yrs. That went into our current account because it was the account he’d been paid into. We didn’t leave it there, it was transferred out as soon as possible.

Well my Revolut account is at 3% so not enormous but as it takes seconds to move the money between the savings and current accounts I only keep a couple of hundred in the current account at any one time.

My average 55 year old house has flawless render, me on the other hand would need industrial strength scaffold to make a difference.

You know if you use a straw it makes it easier to suck every last ounce of humour out of things.

🤣😂

My friend was a financial advisor for a bank; his beat was a seaside area. Visiting elderly people, he said he’d be offered own-brand plain biscuits, the house and occupants would be down-at-heel and they’d be complaining about the cost of living, and invariably they would have £100k+ sitting in their current accounts. They couldn’t be persuaded that they were not poor.

Tripsandtreats · 15/05/2026 13:37

My Mum used! Sadly no longer around. My Mum was quite wealthy and had a lot of funds.
Also she had a good interest on her current account, quite common for HNW individuals.

It can be tricky sticking with the £80K limit with all the banks and when you earn a lot you end up paying loads of tax on interest if filled up ISA allowances! She liked having it for unexpected emergencies. Although I thought it nuts, psychologically, I guess it used to be harder moving money around when she was young.

RealReginaPhalange · 15/05/2026 13:46

It was me, sorry.

Oh thanks for reminding me, I wondered what I'd done with it.

I bloody wish!

No, couldn't be Nige.
He has £3.6m left after buying the £1.4m house.

Pilgrimlady · 15/05/2026 14:56

I had nearly that amount, very briefly, following downsizing. We were so skint (due to dh losing his job due to medical reasons and me having to give up work to look after him) that we'd had to sell our beautiful home and buy a much cheaper, tiny house. After paying off debts etc , we were left with just enough to live on till we'd sorted out his health issues. The money was only in the account for about 2 days, but it was lovely looking at the balance for once instead of it saying overdrawn!

Moellen54 · 15/05/2026 15:17

Ive got more than is a comfortable amount in mine at the moment. Sold a house 12 months ago and had to wait to April to top up the ISAs again. Rest will just go in ordinary savings until ready to start tenovations

Any number of reasons why a person may have a significant sum in their current account. Have done it myself on several occasions.

About to buy a new house and it is the deposit.
Sold a house and this is part of the proceeds.
Are about to make a significant purchase (car, Moho, house extension etc) and are preparing the funds to transfer.
Have recently retired and this is the TFLS.
Moving jobs and have taken a severance package and/or share option.
Are consolidating savings before transfering & investing.
Are transferring any of the above but are limited by the £25k/day limit.

Me too the one time I’ve had that much in my current account was the day it was being transferred to my solicitors for the deposit on my house.

Or, they’ve maxed out their ISA allowances and premium bonds and don’t want more money in saving due to tax implications?

I had that for a couple of hours after a house sale. Ahh that was nice. Now
its overdrawn.

Same here, but it's now part of my pension pot.

Who keeps £80k in their current account? Confused

At one point I had thousands sitting in current account for two weeks. It was to pay off mortgage

TipsyLaird · 15/05/2026 15:43

A few miles from Glasgow, you say?

Airdrie/Bellshill - laundering money for their drug dealer pal.
Dunoon - just sold the pied a terre in London and deciding where to put it
Anniesland - clueless West End OAP with more money than sense

Other direction. Think of a big bridge..

I'm with you.

In that case, could be either way. Laundering cash for druggie mates in Clydebank, or clueless OAPs from Milngavie or Helensburgh.

PeachBlossom1234 · 15/05/2026 16:00

I used to work in a bank, £80k in a current account is common even if it’s ill advised! There are people who have millions in their everyday current account

Needspaceforlego · 15/05/2026 16:01

OneNewLeader · 15/05/2026 10:16

Maybe they’re about to transfer it for a house deposit.

That's what I was thinking house purchase or sale.
The bank would advise them not to keep that sort of money ina current account

I'm minus £1600 in my account. Maybe I'll leave the withdrawal receipt in the machine to make the next person feel better about themselves next time I use it!

shuggles · 15/05/2026 16:07

@LoyalMember Weird place to have that kind of money. I only have £50 in my current account... but I have money comparable to that person which is tied up in investment accounts.

Oh, we'll be there or thereabouts in a week or two as well. I wince at the dreaded text from the Bank saying 'Your latest transaction has taken you into your agreed overdraft...'
