Where are you doing your main grocery shop?

I've used asda for quite some time now, but now that they've changed their rewards programme, plus with the general increase in prices, I'm thinking of switching my loyalties.

Where do you do your main shop? My shop is quite heavy in fruit, veg, salad, flour etc as I don't really do brands and cook quite a lot. Asda has always worked well for me with the own brands.
Tesco seems to have a good club card system (I use the petrol station) but doesn't seem to have much in the way of basics items, whereas Asda was good for this.
It needs to be somewhere that does delivery as I'm a single parent to smalls and work full time so not aldi or lidl.

Do you recommend anywhere?

I switched from Asda for the same reasons. I now use sainsburys

XiCi · 19/06/2025 20:03

Mostly Sainsbury's. I'll treat myself to a Waitrose one every few weeks or so.

purpleygrey · 19/06/2025 20:04

I really like Tesco.

Michele09 · 19/06/2025 20:05

Sainsburys

BCBird · 19/06/2025 20:05

I use Ocado but think won't renew my delivery pass nxt year because the prices are becoming ridiculously high.

feelingbleh · 19/06/2025 20:06

I use asda i tried aldi for a bit but didn't like a lot of the food and didnt find it much cheaper so I switched back to Asda. Mainly because its closest to my house, I know where everything is and the staff are really nice

CaptainSevenofNine · 19/06/2025 20:06

Lidl.

Picklechicken · 19/06/2025 20:06

Tesco simply because we save our Clubcard points and spend them on pizza express vouchers which feels like a nice treat every so often. I am a bit of a brand snob and don’t like Aldi 🙈

SendBooksAndTea · 19/06/2025 20:06

Tesco is actually pretty good for own brand basics.

I looked at ocado i couldn't believe the prices

Sainsbury’s - with Nectar points and prices, I get my shopping cheaper there.

CaptainSevenofNine · 19/06/2025 20:07

Lidl now has a loyalty app and we often get freebies, discounts or 10% off whole shop!

PluckyBamboo · 19/06/2025 20:08

Tesco, simply because it was the closest large supermarket.

Also top up with extras from local Bakery, butcher and M&S.

Kelim · 19/06/2025 20:08

Morrisons - it's not cheap for branded shelf food but it's good for fresh.

Alwaystired2023 · 19/06/2025 20:09

Ocado I don't find it too expensive for the shop I do

Meetmeundertheclock · 19/06/2025 20:10

Sainsbury's for us, the only source of grapefruit for miles around, they also have the only petrol that is close.
For oddments Coop, they have the Post Office. Iceland for fish.

FrostyMorn · 19/06/2025 20:10

Sainsbury's. It might be a bit more expensive than Tesco but I find the quality of their home brand stuff better. Sometimes pop into Lidl but it has a strange smell (am I the only one?!) and if I'm cooking from a recipe I can rarely buy all the ingredients I need there so find myself going to Sainsbury's anyway.

Biomic · 19/06/2025 20:11

Morrison’s

hyggetyggedotorg · 19/06/2025 20:11

Asda, which isn’t really helpful in your situation 😁.

I find Tesco absolutely dreadful. There are so many things I consider pretty basic that they just don’t seem to stock any more - and it’s expensive. I like Sainsbury’s but because I hardly ever shop there I end up spending way more as I’m tempted by things I wouldn’t normally buy (and I like their clothes!)

We do shop at Lidl sometimes but I find the selection quite boring.

You can’t really do a whole shop there but for bulk buying items like drinks, freezer food, crisps etc etc, Iceland Food Warehouse is excellent value if you have one locally.

Lidl is great , never had any issues with fruit/ veg

terracelane23 · 19/06/2025 20:11

Sainsburys

BastardesEverywhere · 19/06/2025 20:12

A mix of Lidl and Sainsburys.

I honestly don't think I could afford to do my whole weekly shop in Tesco. It seems so expensive to me, whenever I've shopped there just for a few bits I've been horrified at the total! It seems far more expensive than either Lidl or Sainsbury's to me.

Growlybear83 · 19/06/2025 20:13

I’ve used Ocado for over 20 years and have always found them incredibly reliable. I don’t think they’re particularly expensive and the quality of fresh food has always seemed much better than other supermarkets. They’ve also got a much better range of organic food than anywhere else apart from maybe Waitrose.

Crushed23 · 19/06/2025 20:14

Wholefoods.

Topped up with bits from Morton Williams which is a little closer to my apartment, although a bit pricier than Wholefoods.

I’m lucky in that work provide free breakfast. I buy lunch at work (yes, a massive salad) on the 4 days a week I’m in the office. I also eat dinner out 3-4 times a week (client dinners; I’m in the early stages of dating someone and most of our dates involve going to a restaurant; eating out is a big part of socialising with friends).

So my grocery shop only needs to cover a few dinners and a couple of breakfasts and lunches.

Still well over $100/week and that’s just for one. I miss how cheap groceries were in London. 😭

Aldi for the main shop and Tesco Express /Lidl fr bits and bobs. I prefer the quality of the meat raw and cooked from aldi as well as the price.
