Where are you doing your main grocery shop?

I've used asda for quite some time now, but now that they've changed their rewards programme, plus with the general increase in prices, I'm thinking of switching my loyalties.

Where do you do your main shop? My shop is quite heavy in fruit, veg, salad, flour etc as I don't really do brands and cook quite a lot. Asda has always worked well for me with the own brands.
Tesco seems to have a good club card system (I use the petrol station) but doesn't seem to have much in the way of basics items, whereas Asda was good for this.
It needs to be somewhere that does delivery as I'm a single parent to smalls and work full time so not aldi or lidl.

Do you recommend anywhere?

M&S mainly as I do think their quality is much better than the other supermarkets. Then alternate between Tesco and Ocado for the stuff they don’t sell.

JustFeedMeCake · 19/06/2025 21:36

I used to love Ocado but we moved and they’re not delivering here yet but say they plan to soon. I use Sainsburys but the short dates and poor quality is putting me off so I’m looking to switch.

Doggymummar · 19/06/2025 21:37

We use Ocado, they price match Tesco, and Tesco match Aldi so it's great quality at a great price

EveryDayisFriday · 19/06/2025 21:38

I use Lidl, but that doesn't help you.

EveryDayisFriday · 19/06/2025 21:39

Out of the main shops however, I would use Sainsbury's or Morrisons but I find them both expensive compared to Lidl and Aldi.

Limmers14 · 19/06/2025 21:40

Ocado. They’ve such a wonderful selection and we find the prices and quality are far better for our standard food shop than Sainsbury’s or Aldi. We shopped around before sticking to Ocado. We spend on average £80 for 2 adults weekly

notnorman · 19/06/2025 21:43

tesco but only cos of colleague discount. Would be Ocado otherwise

This is the app which gave me £27 off my Ocado shop yesterday.

Thank you everyone. I've downloaded the Sainsbury's app to give that a try. Ocado is a bit outside of my budget I think.
I really like lidl but I don't have the time (or the energy) for a big shop.

Ocado. They do price match too. You can sort by price too

DillyDallyingAllDay · 20/06/2025 19:58

The last few weeks I’ve found Sainsbury’s is cheaper than Asda on a lot of basics. I also think Sainsbury’s own brand is far better than Asda own brand.

Pigtailsandall · 21/06/2025 14:47

Sainsburys, they have a better/wider selection. We have a Tesco close by for any emergency items but their basics are a lower quality imo. Occasionally pick up a few things from Waitrose (mainly fancier stuff that Sainsburys doesn't do)

Augustus40 · 21/06/2025 16:38

I go to our local Asda still as I know where everything is plus the checkout staff actually chat to you. Whereas our local Tesco although more sophisticated and slightly more upmarket choice of foods the staff are not very friendly.

MeAndMyGhost · 21/06/2025 16:41

Morrisons with an occasional dip into Waitrose if feeling fancy.

*note, in a rural British town. Options are limited.

taxguru · 21/06/2025 16:43

I rotate between Morrisons, Sainsbury and Tesco. That way I get the offers on the non perishables as I just buy things like cans, crisps, cleaning stuff, packets, tins, frozen stuffs, etc when they're on offer somewhere. I just take pot luck with the perishables such as dairy, meats, bread, fruit & veg etc as I don't really notice much difference between those three supermarkets.

Our Tesco is the opposite - the staff are remarkably good. I've actually got to know many of the staff who seem to have been there forever. It's one of the reasons I like going in there. Sainsbury staff are also pretty friendly, but our Asda staff are just grumpy and miserable which is partly why I don't go there anymore.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 21/06/2025 16:45

Tesco.

it’s cheaper than ASDA and their fruit and veg is better quality.

itispersonal · 21/06/2025 16:49

I shop at both asda and Tescos. If I didn’t have discount it would just be at Tescos. We are mostly a shop cheap brands family.

lidl and Aldi are ok but I personally can’t do a full weekly shop there and it’s not that much cheaper now if at all.

muddyford · 21/06/2025 16:52

Sainsbury's three times a fortnight, Lidl once.

MikeRafone · 21/06/2025 18:09

I try and go to Lidl as they have just about everything I need / then Sainsbury for the few random items they don’t have. I will stock up on the Sainsbury items so I’m only going once a month if possible.

i had it down to £80 for 4 people and making my own bread, food recipes but no lunches for 3 of the 4 in the weekdays / just lunches on weekends

CoastalCalm · 21/06/2025 18:12

Usually Lidl but last couple at Aldi as they have some lovely low calorie ice lollies in

Wigtopia · 21/06/2025 18:12

typicaltuesdaynight · 19/06/2025 20:11

Lidl is great , never had any issues with fruit/ veg

We do Lidl for majority, and Sainsburys for goat milk and cheese.

like you, Fruit and veg at our Lidl is great but I’ve seen a few threads that seem to slate Lidl fresh foods!

WhatABigYikes · 21/06/2025 18:15

Lidl for most of our shopping
Tesco for the branded stuff we like that Lidl don't do
And M&S for some prep marinades/sauces etc

SkibidiSigma · 21/06/2025 18:23

Lidl, the reward scheme is great, I save so much with the monthly 10% off coupon. Plus I've twice won £10 off with the random comps they run in the app. I also love the fruit spin of surprises when they run it, where you get free fruit and veg items.

I know that doesn't help you op though sorry. Out of the ones that deliver my preference is Sainsbury's, I'm not keen on Asda. Years ago they cancelled my food delivery on December 23rd and didn't even let me know until I rung to ask where it was 😯

sunnydaysfillmewithpeace · 21/06/2025 18:33

Sainsbury’s. Nectar card is great and there’s a really good mix of nice quality and budget stuff. I too used Asda and collected all the Rewards points but the app is little more than a thing that tracks what you buy and gives nothing back now.

I also used to do my dad’s shopping online at Asda but by switching to Sainsbury’s and using different vouchers, I think I’ve cut his weekly shopping bill by about 15%.
