Where are you doing your main grocery shop?

I've used asda for quite some time now, but now that they've changed their rewards programme, plus with the general increase in prices, I'm thinking of switching my loyalties.

Where do you do your main shop? My shop is quite heavy in fruit, veg, salad, flour etc as I don't really do brands and cook quite a lot. Asda has always worked well for me with the own brands.
Tesco seems to have a good club card system (I use the petrol station) but doesn't seem to have much in the way of basics items, whereas Asda was good for this.
It needs to be somewhere that does delivery as I'm a single parent to smalls and work full time so not aldi or lidl.

Do you recommend anywhere?

Aldi. It's the cheapest.

ARichtGoodDram · 25/06/2025 13:09

We've recently started using Waitrose for basics as our Tesco is dire. With the vouchers they send on the app it doesn't work out more expensive like I expected. The fruit and veg works out much better as it lasts. Tescos fruit has been a false economy for a while for us with the amount we end up binning.

We use a local butcher for meat and also use Costco for things like washing liquid and toilet roll.

Pinkrosesyellowroses · 25/06/2025 13:25

Tesco - the Clubcard is good, lots of good own brands, they are price matched to Aldi, they stock a huge range of products, the delivery drivers are usually friendly and helpful and the fresh fruit and vegetables tend to be fresher than Sainsbury’s (although that may just be in this area. I do like Sainsbury’s too.)

I use Ocado but think won't renew my delivery pass nxt year because the prices are becoming ridiculously high.

Edited

Same for me. I switched from Ocado as I felt that the prices were getting out of control. I now use Sainsbury’s with the odd Waitrose order thrown in and have found this consistently cheaper.

Kaftanesque · 04/07/2025 21:31

Was always Sainsbury's but then swapped to a mixture of M&S and Aldi as next to each other and closer to home. However have gone back to Sainsbury's weekly using the vouchers and Nectar prices works out cheaper and saving counts for Xmas.Have a great choice of farm shops too and prefer my meat from them.

This is the app which gave me £27 off my Ocado shop yesterday.

I just looked at their TrustPilot reviews. Average rating of 2.1 with most people saying it’s a scam site.

CrepuscularCritter · 06/07/2025 08:31

Mixture of Ocado and Tesco here, as neither do everything we need. Tesco is by click and collect, as they pick from a location that has more choice. I try to keep it to two shops per month, plus an occasional top up for salad.

Wolmando · 06/07/2025 08:53

It's worth signing up with Ocado as at the beginning they give you 3 or 6 months free delivery pass, I got 6 months then they shower you with gifts like Hotel Chocolate box and lots of money off coupons. I exhausted it all but didn't bother renewing my pass.

AdoraBell · 09/07/2025 17:44

Waitrose online because most of what I buy is either cheaper or similar to Sainsbury’s and Tesco when I used to use them. Also, the staff all have shares.

In person, either Tesco or Sainsbury depending which town we go to for errands.

AdoraBell · 09/07/2025 17:54

The delivery charge with Waitrose is £2 for a 4 hour slot, I can’t remember the other charge but £4 rings a bell. Minimum order is £40, with Tesco they charge £5 if the order is less than £50. I’m in SW, not sure if the location makes a difference.

Tesco mostly. I find Asda, aldi and lidl fruit and veg ropey and don't last. Same for things like ham.
One week I tried aldi and it was £10 more than tesco for the same items

Lifestooshort71 · 17/07/2025 04:50

I do Sainsbury's (and M&S but only once a month). It's taken me 73 years to realise that, with a printed master list of most stuff we get through in a month, I can cobble together 'a big shop' list from it each month (when my pension has gone in) and go to Sainsbury's and stock up. It costs me on average £120 but, more importantly, it means I'm not always popping in for one thing and spending £20! I do the same with M&S (but only spend about £50) and get our favourites as treats. Most ready meals go in the freezer, I choose yellow stickers where I can, and by just topping up fruit (most of our veg is frozen), bread and eggs each week, I seem to be better off each month - no impulse buys. There are only 2 of us and we're happy with scrambled eggs some nights which makes it easier.

aGirlLikeJesamine · 18/07/2025 06:09

i still use asda for the things i know are cheaper
but tesco for most
top up with lidl
waitrose for some basic, their sausages for example

Meetmeundertheclock · 19/06/2025 20:10

Sainsbury's for us, the only source of grapefruit for miles around, they also have the only petrol that is close.
For oddments Coop, they have the Post Office. Iceland for fish.

Lidl have fresh grapefruit on offer for 29p this week .

Meadowfinch · 18/07/2025 06:17
  • Tesco for basics and fruit & veg,
  • Grow my own salad in summer. Make my own jams.
  • Independent village butcher for meat

I find Tesco meat is so plumped up with water, meat from the butcher is better value and much better quality

I've given up on supermarket bread completely. I order a sack of wholemeal flour from the local mill once every six months, and make my own.

Crushed23 · 19/06/2025 20:14

Wholefoods.

Topped up with bits from Morton Williams which is a little closer to my apartment, although a bit pricier than Wholefoods.

I’m lucky in that work provide free breakfast. I buy lunch at work (yes, a massive salad) on the 4 days a week I’m in the office. I also eat dinner out 3-4 times a week (client dinners; I’m in the early stages of dating someone and most of our dates involve going to a restaurant; eating out is a big part of socialising with friends).

So my grocery shop only needs to cover a few dinners and a couple of breakfasts and lunches.

Still well over $100/week and that’s just for one. I miss how cheap groceries were in London. 😭

It's not called whole paycheck for no reason. 🤭

HelloHattie · 18/07/2025 06:19

Aldi. V happy with it.

sashh · 18/07/2025 06:41

Sainsbury's and Iceland.

Iceland is surprisingly good for basic fresh fruit and veg. They might only have one cucumber type and only 3 types of lettuce but it is fresh and good. They do same day deliveries at reasonable prices, I'm expecting a delivery today that costs £1.50.

If you order over £40 delivery is free apart from same day.

With Sainsbury's I have a delivery pass that costs me £4 a month and I can get mid week deliveries (subject to £40 minimum spend) for free.

One thing they do with substitutions is that they will charge you for the substitution and then issue a voucher for the difference.

Last week I had ordered duck legs and two packs of Chinese pancakes, they substituted one pack of pancakes with actual duck.

lemon6 · 18/07/2025 06:50

A four weekly big shop at Asda for basics. M@S for fresh fruit and veg plus treats, then our local butcher.

looselegs · 18/07/2025 13:52

I've used Tesco for years. However when the cost of living started to rocket a couple of years ago, we gave aldi a go.
I think my aldi shop was only about £10 cheaper, and they didn't have everything we wanted so ended up at Tesco anyway!

FlowerPower2525 · 18/07/2025 14:15

Tesco mostly. Few bits from Aldis like cupboard staples and few frozen but I find their fresh food is a bit rubbish.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 18/07/2025 14:39

Ocado / M&S. Not expensive for what I order and when items I use are on special, I over order. I find the quality dropping in Lidl and Aldi on some products (just had to complain about two products to Lidl). Mostly own brands and a few unusual brands not available elsewhere.

Pinepeak2434 · 22/07/2025 13:33

Sainsburys. I save a bit when they send me offers on the app. All this price matching with Aldi is ridiculous, because Aldi keep increasing their prices and so they all do. Feels like they’re all in it together!

UnwantedOpinionBelow · 22/07/2025 13:34

Ocado, their delivery service is amazing and I like the fact my food isn't handled by loads of humans.
