Where are you doing your main grocery shop?

I've used asda for quite some time now, but now that they've changed their rewards programme, plus with the general increase in prices, I'm thinking of switching my loyalties.

Where do you do your main shop? My shop is quite heavy in fruit, veg, salad, flour etc as I don't really do brands and cook quite a lot. Asda has always worked well for me with the own brands.
Tesco seems to have a good club card system (I use the petrol station) but doesn't seem to have much in the way of basics items, whereas Asda was good for this.
It needs to be somewhere that does delivery as I'm a single parent to smalls and work full time so not aldi or lidl.

Do you recommend anywhere?

I find Aldi the cheapest by quite a margin, except for Lidl where I struggle with the use by dates.

I shopped at Tesco or Asda previously - it took a while to work out which substitutions to make but have got the weekly
shop down to a fine art again now 😂.

Aldi haven’t had their caramelised sausages in stock in my area for a few weeks though… any suggestions where best to get something similar? 😂

A mix of Lidl and Sainsburys.

I honestly don't think I could afford to do my whole weekly shop in Tesco. It seems so expensive to me, whenever I've shopped there just for a few bits I've been horrified at the total! It seems far more expensive than either Lidl or Sainsbury's to me.

This is exactly what I find. I feel like Tesco is easily 20% more expensive than a combination of Sainsbury's and Lidl.

Sorry, haven't read the whole thread but whichever supermarket you are shopping at, try buying gift cards through Jam Doughnut. This is my referral link https://app.jamdoughnut.com/ZN1G

If you're going to be spending money on your supermarket shop anyway, this is a really good way of saving a bit of cash. You buy a gift card through Jam Doughnut, use it at the till and get loyalty points through Nectar or whatever as well. It's really easy.

How do you save cash?

TheGrimSmile · 24/07/2025 13:38

Aldi for the bulk of it. Then some things from M and S, Morrisons and Sainsbury's. I prefer Lidl but we don't have one here or I'd use them.

Because if you're going to spend the money anyway, you may as well get some cash back.
Obviously don't just spend for the sake of it. But if you're spending money at Sainsburys or wherever, get the gift card and get some cash back.

Honestly, it sounds a lot more complicated than it is! I don't buy anything now without checking I can get a gift card and cash back (was annoyed at myself that they do Uber as well).

TheChosenTwo · 24/07/2025 16:56

I do my online shop with Tesco. Used to use ocado until they dumped Waitrose and went with M&S and stopped stocking loads of the French stuff they used to.
We find Tesco fine, not expensive, but we get the meat from the butchers. Delivery always comes on time from a big supermarket nearby, very rare that I get any subs or missing items, drivers are really friendly. Suits us.

Oh so it’s a cash back thing! Thanks x

Yes, sorry if I didn't make that clear 🙂

Honestly worth it if you shop at the same places and would spend the money anyway.

Haha that’s ok - every little helps in the words of Tesco!

PrioritisePleasure24 · 26/07/2025 07:47

I hate food shopping, used to do aldi. But had ocado offer and never looked back. Drivers are lovely. The food quality is great and fruit/veg lasts. Prices have been creeping up but i keep an eye in the other supermarkets and even aldi and lidl are no longer cheap at all. Which is why we stayed. Some of the prices are comparable honestly.

Also i look out for offers and have time to add to my list etc. They do some decent offers sometimes. The ocado or m&s basics are brilliant. Also price match tesco and i regularly get a voucher for that.

It depends on what you shop for. Of course there’s ridiculously expensive items on Ocado but if you avoid those, it’s great.

MoreIcedLattePlease · 30/07/2025 16:59

Ocado. I used to use Sainsbury's but find the produce we get from Ocado is generally nicer/better value. We do spend more than we could elsewhere, but we don't spend ridiculous amounts (well, we do, but only because food is expensive everywhere)!

For a family of 5 - the youngest being 11, so mostly adult portions all round - we average £120 on Ocado a week. £150-200 a month in Costco for household goods, bulk buying cupboard supplies etc. At an absolute maximum our monthly food and household (dishwasher, laundry tabs, cleaning stuff) is £750. That's a lot, but not when you consider it's largely M&S food and it works out at £150 per person a month.

We don't do takeaways, buy lunches out etc. I bake a lot, we all take packed lunches to work/school. We don't buy/drink alcohol or smoke. Ocado is my main luxury!

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 30/07/2025 19:33

Tesco. Asda is not great at substitutions, Sainsbury's website is rubbish, Waitrose is a bit pricey and Occasionally got binned off years ago. I will also do an in person shop at Aldi once a month to keep costs down but they don't do decent bread or meat and also shopping in person can get expensive when you don't have the luxury of looking at the total and going back through your basket to delete a load of nice to haves.

suki1964 · 31/07/2025 21:51

Lidl/Tesco and the local Spar

Lidl is the back bones. Tesco is for alcohol and certain products not stocked by lidl - bread is one, we all take different breads. And my local Spar is actually supplying with me most of my groceries for pennies, I work there, they yellow sticker when Im there, I take full advantage. And as it is a local Spar, its butchery meat I get for pennies

I popped into Sainsburys the other day to buy a product not carried by the others, so I thought Id have a dander. I filled one carrier bag and it cost me £68 - no meat or fish. Just picked up those wee bits that bring joy to a meal. Not "needed" stuff but oh, that looks good . Marks and Spencers is a lot cheaper ( IMO )

goingtotown · 31/07/2025 22:27

Sainsbury’s there’s no waste with their fruit & veg it lasts til my next weekly shop. Wasted too much money in Aldi & Lidl trying different items & being disappointed.

Spookedbythespiders · 08/08/2025 00:03

I like Aldi for a variety of non perishables but actually have a Sainsbury’s delivery and most of it is price matched to Aldi.

i personally feel Sainsburys fruit and vegetables last longer. But I prefer Aldi mince.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 08/08/2025 06:27

I used to do Sainsbury's delivery once a month but last time it was going to be £250 for the month, just me and two cats.

Done Occado when they've given me offers but it is no cheaper otherwise.

Did Aldi this month and for the same shop it worked out £20 cheaper than Sainsbury's and the food wasn't bad (the shreddies were a little crunchy). Only problem is they don't do the cat food my cats like (they love the cat treats from there though) or my toiletries, nd I haven't tried to fruit and veg because I always hear stories about it not lasting, so I had to go elsewhere anyway.

Bjorkdidit · 08/08/2025 08:26

Aldi and Lidl fruit and veg lasts the same as anywhere else. I've been shopping there since well before it was socially acceptable and it's always been fine.

I think it's one of those bizarre oddities that people convince themselves of as justification to use more expensive supermarkets.

itsmeafterall · 08/08/2025 08:27

Lidl. Fruit and veg are excellent. Took a third off our bill switching from a mix of Sainsburys and Waitrose.

RandomUsernameHere · 08/08/2025 08:29

Tesco always. The quality is better than the others and prices are good.

I wonder if it's store specific then. People keep telling me it doesn't last from our one.

I was also put off years ago because I went in there during the summer for some salad, and everything was from abroad. It was prime UK growing season, so the tomatoes and cucumbers should have been from the UK, not imported from Holland.

Enko · 08/08/2025 14:25

Sainsbury and Waitrose with top ups from. M&s as thats our closest

cupfinalchaos · 08/08/2025 14:29

feelingbleh · 19/06/2025 20:07

I looked at ocado i couldn't believe the prices

I use Ocado sometimes and the quality of the fresh food they send is abysmal. Only use it when I’m desperate (have a dinner party) but usually end up throwing bad quality stuff away and going to Tesco to replace.

suki1964 · 11/08/2025 00:27

I went to Sainsburys the other day, not my normal shop tbh, I never even filled a bag, and I was mostly buying nectar point stuff - £60 - no meat, just the bits that I cant buy in my local Teso/lidl ( like jars of pink onions and pink slaw )
