Making your own butter seems to be all the rage on social media at the moment.

Google tells me you'd get 200g of butter out of 300ml of double cream plus 100ml of buttermilk.

300ml of double cream = £1.50 at Sainsburys

Shame the Kilner butter churner is about £50 though!

Making butter is easier and cheaper. You don't need a butter churner as you can use and electric mixer on a slowish soead to avoid the butter milk splashing. Wash well in cold water after draining buttermilk. Shape and use or freeze!! 🙂

Farmers need to make a living. Cow feed is expensive, as is labour, insurance, vet costs etc etc. Or would you rather we concrete over the countryside and buy our dairy in from maltreated animals living in industrial mega farms in China? You might save a few pence on your butter.

This. Everything is going up....food is the only think I don't resent.

OhcantthInkofaname · 24/01/2025 20:16

I wish I was good at £ conversion to $. But I'm sure here in the US our prices are higher.

What about the price of eggs in the UK? I paid $5.72 for one dozen extra large eggs in the midwest US. Many chickens are being destroyed by avian flu prevention which will make the prices even higher.

fatimashortbread · 24/01/2025 20:31

I get my butter at Costco as you are paying £3.79 for 500g of Anchor and £5.79 for Beurre D’Isigny. It’s the biggest saving item I buy

I stopped buying butter when it hit £1:45

what do you buy instead?

UtterJoke · 24/01/2025 21:22

Is it because of the bovaer additive and country life is not an Arla product therefore creating a supply demand ?

I've never done it but have read that you put cream into a food processor and keep it turning for a few minutes until the cream separates into butter and whey.
May have forgotten something though!

I make my own yoghurt now. So easy and you don't need the expensive sachets...just milk, some left over live yoghurt from the previous batch, and dried milk powder( optional). Cuts down on plastic tubs too and it's way healthier because it doesn't have added sugar. Agree making butter is easy too. So with butter, bread, yoghurt and soups I'm practically a home made domestic Goddess now! I haven't yet made jam but I have lots of friends who do and are happy to share.

When I used to make yogurt I found it stopped working after a few goes if I used some of the old batch to make a new lot.
It was more successful if I always started a batch with a small bought carton of natural yogurt.

fingerbobz · 24/01/2025 22:43

Kerrygold is decent and cheaper

£2.79 for 12 large at Aldi

I've made our butter for years. 600ml double cream yields just under 400g butter. The cream costs me £2.45. You can churn the cream in a stand mixer or put it into a lidded jar and shake it long and vigorously. It's easy to do and the buttermilk is a bonus for scones or to drink as it is. Cream at its sell-by date is best.

Yeo Valley spreadable butter has gone up to £4.50! 😬

florasl · 23/01/2025 17:43

M&S’s 500g pack is £3.75 and nicer!

Butter, or spread? Unusual to find actual butter at that price, @florasl

florasl · 25/01/2025 07:35

@usernamealreadytaken block of butter, same price on Ocado too.

It’s getting much more difficult to find discounted cream unfortunately. It used to be be if those things you could always pick up in the reduced section. Not any more as more and more people make cream and icecream

This shocked me the other day. Who'd pay that? It's on offer now, but wasn't the other day.

If you're near a Farmfoods, Nescafe Azera is £4.99 for 140g. Much cheaper and a bigger tin!

We still get Yeo Valley milk, it's a lot

I feel like two cartons is close to Ocado minimum order. Not really, but still

Honestly you don’t need a butter churned, a stand mixer will do it! I’ve made butter simply by whipping double cream until it separates and then draining it in a new j-cloth or similar tied up in a sieve for a few hours. Then you can add a little salt if you like and shape it with butter paddles which I found cheaply on eBay!

I've never tried it but have been meaning to. Apparently you can use the whey you strained off as a starter. It keeps for around 6 months in the fridge (so they say).

I buy the mini chocolate bars in Aldi, the moser roth ones
Noticed they had gone up quite a bit recently

I used to buy the Lidl version for 99p. I was in the store earlier this week and a bar was £2.15!
