I'm sure if we stop paying these ridiculous prices, they would reduce them!

Particularly if it's not really an essential item

Butter counts as an essential item in my book. No lard on my toast, thanks

Bulk out your mince with oats.

FFS. We just want to afford nice , healthy food

Oats are healthy.

CoastalCalm · 23/01/2025 19:21

Husband made some butter at the weekend - paid £1.20 for two yellow stickered double creams and got two blocks of butter from it one of which we have frozen. Took him 10 mins and it’s delicious

I'll stick with the view of reputable scientists such as Professor Sarah Berry of the ZOE project and Professor of Population Health and Nutrition at the University of Cambridge, Nita Forouhi, who both say that seed oils are perfectly safe. Also, I didn't say it was cheap. It's a lot cheaper than blended olive oil, but it's not the cheapest blended 'vegetable' oil.

I'm 63, btw. There aren't that many years to take off my life now.

That’s your call to take the opinion of two academics who are not active researchers in this field over a few dozen research scientists who are just as reputable.

I tend to be a bit more cautious. It’s not wrong to inform people of recent research on diet and cancer and let them make up their own minds.

Dripping toast, anyone? A delicious savoury staple of my childhood.

Agree the Aldi West Country butter with salt crystals is excellent.

Their own brand is £1.99. Even the Taste the Difference one is £2.75, so still cheaper. Not sure why anyone would buy branded butter. Personally, I can't tell the difference.

Well I can taste the difference nad must sy that would not be my preference. I hate it when butter tastes of animal. Some butters just smell and taste rank to me!

Always had dripping on toast for breakfast on Mondays after staying with nan for the weekend.
It's now my occasional treat if we have a beef joint.

PandoraFrontier · 23/01/2025 19:27

Not all butter is made equal.

kerrygold only here, as cows are grass fed.

HellofromJohnCraven · 23/01/2025 19:27

The coffee is so they can slash the price later. I always buy that in packs of 6 large tins from Amazon. Lucky that I can afford to do it and have the space to store it.

Crikeyalmighty · 23/01/2025 19:37

I only use small amounts of butter on either scones or crumpets so will buy Waitrose French or President as I only buy it maybe once a month or so - apart from that use Olivia spread

Elphame · 23/01/2025 19:37

We always have the Waitrose Essential - £2.25

Kerrygold is £2.85 in Waitrose

dutysuite · 23/01/2025 19:43

It’s depressing. Sainsburys is my local supermarket and the prices go up weekly. I buy the Kerrygold block and as mentioned it seems to have gone up in price every time I buy it.

Mykittensmittens · 23/01/2025 18:21

Could I do this in a kenwood chef with the whisk attachment then? I like salty butter and therefore I’d like to try.

I’ve made butter by mistake in my K chef - by whipping double cream for too long!

dutysuite · 23/01/2025 19:50

Noperope · 23/01/2025 18:34

Broccoli is 99p in Lidl at the moment. I had to look around to make sure I wasn't in Waitrose.

I feel the same about the price of cauliflower.

DazzlingCuckoos · 23/01/2025 18:04

Making your own butter seems to be all the rage on social media at the moment.

Google tells me you'd get 200g of butter out of 300ml of double cream plus 100ml of buttermilk.

300ml of double cream = £1.50 at Sainsburys

Shame the Kilner butter churner is about £50 though!

You can do it in a blender. It’s lovely but doesn’t keep out of the fridge. I only do it for special occasions.

OhMelville · 23/01/2025 20:00

Costco is the best place to get Lurpak butter! Very reasonably priced.

herbetta · 23/01/2025 20:00

ChestnutGrove · 23/01/2025 16:59

This shocked me the other day. Who'd pay that? It's on offer now, but wasn't the other day.

Waaaay cheaper in either Home Bargains, B&M or Farmfoods 👍

TinklySnail · 23/01/2025 20:03

Do you think it’s to do with Bovaer (sic) stuff?
I know Country Life isn’t part of the trials.

OneBadKitty · 23/01/2025 20:04

This butter is lovely and a bit softer so will spread if you leave it out for about half an hour before using- I'm pretty sure it's Kerrygold in different packaging for M&S as it's made in Northern ireland and exactly same composition as the Kerrygold softer butter but works out a bit cheaper.

M&S’s 500g pack is £3.75 and nicer!

M&S all the way! My partner works for them so we get our discount too :))

Sinkintotheswamp · 23/01/2025 20:05

marshmallowfinder · 23/01/2025 19:01

It's not. It weighs 200g and the Country Life is 250g, sadly. Shrinkflation.

Well spotted.
The sainsburys own organic is 250g though.

Roundthebend45 · 23/01/2025 20:06

Currently in Tesco…£8.25 for 750g of Lurpack.

LadyMary50 · 23/01/2025 20:07

But it’s only 250g,I bought 500g in Tesco for £3.50 this week.I always look at the weight as some brands have cut the weight but kept the price…
