This shocked me the other day. Who'd pay that? It's on offer now, but wasn't the other day.

It's been around the £6 mark for ages, it's always been quite expensive for instant. I buy the decaff version, it's usually on offer, but if I ran out and it was for sale at that price, I'd buy it.

Farmers need to make a living. Cow feed is expensive, as is labour, insurance, vet costs etc etc. Or would you rather we concrete over the countryside and buy our dairy in from maltreated animals living in industrial mega farms in China? You might save a few pence on your butter.

The beefGrin isn't with farmers; it's with Sainsbury's being way out of line with other retailers.

Making your own butter seems to be all the rage on social media at the moment.

Google tells me you'd get 200g of butter out of 300ml of double cream plus 100ml of buttermilk.

300ml of double cream = £1.50 at Sainsburys

Shame the Kilner butter churner is about £50 though!

Just bung it in a food processor if you have one, beat the heck out of it with an electric whisk, or, if all else fails, put it in a jam jar with a marble and shake til butter forms.

It's so piss easy to make, once you know how.

gmgnts · 23/01/2025 18:15

£3.90 for a tiny (100g) bag of pine nuts in Tesco. Needless to say, I didn't buy them!

Mykittensmittens · 23/01/2025 18:18

I’ve just this hour moaned about this to a friend. Doing the Tesco order tweaks for collect tomorrow. A block of Tesco own salted was £1.79 last week. Now £1.99. I’m working my way through the rest of the order with dread.

EvilNextDoor · 23/01/2025 18:18

I’ve started making my own but I can get hold of cheap double cream.

My favourite Christmas gift was some butter paddles 🤣

I made some lovely chilli butter at the weekend

Most likely

I was shopping the other day and also noticed that some butters were packaged in 200g packs now rather than 250g. So they look cheaper but actually you are getting 20% less.

It’s been like for a good year now, I only noticed as I’d picked up Sainsburys own then saw Anchor which I prefer cheaper, only when I put anchor butter on top of the Sainsbury butter did I realise that the packets were slightly different shape. The anchor was a 200g pack.

Could I do this in a kenwood chef with the whisk attachment then? I like salty butter and therefore I’d like to try.

MissDemelzaCarne · 23/01/2025 18:24

There’s always one on offer and that’s the one I’ll get.

Looks like it’s Lurpak this week. £1.90 for 200g, with a Nectar card.

I'm in the States and I pay $8.50 for a small tub of Kerrygold butter! Think yourselves lucky!

cleowasmycat · 23/01/2025 18:27

Best butter ever.

Your food costs are one of the most expensive in the world right now, even higher than Australia's I think, but your gas/petrol is much cheaper, and your salaries are much higher and tax lower.

If I factor in my time at a £25 / hour, it becomes rather more expensive…

TheLilacScroller · 23/01/2025 18:30

I think you can use a blender or food processor to make butter out of cream.

whippleproceedure · 23/01/2025 18:31

Completely missing the point but the French salted butter in Waitrose is fantastic we say it's like crack cocaine here as it's so addictive!!

marmaladegranny · 23/01/2025 18:32

And you have to watch the weight of butter now! Several brands are only 200g rather than 250g!

CowBuoy · 23/01/2025 18:32

I used to buy Sainsbury's dark chocolate whole nut bar which was £1.70 for 200g.

I went to buy it last week and was shocked to see that it had increased to £2.30 an increase of more than 35%.

I was in Sainsbury's again today and as I was passing the chocolate section, I had a quick look in case they had made a mistake and I was right, they obviously had made a mistake because instead of charging £2.30 they were now charging £2.50 😲.
That's a total increase of 47%!

I think it was £2.60 last week when I bought it.

Noperope · 23/01/2025 18:34

Broccoli is 99p in Lidl at the moment. I had to look around to make sure I wasn't in Waitrose.

WTFMywork · 23/01/2025 18:36

Have you seen the cost of Lurpak on tesco now? Over £8 for a large tub. Ridiculous!

Bubbles90 · 23/01/2025 18:36

I always bulk buy my butter when there is a good deal on. It freezes very well. I keep my freezer well stocked.

U can literally just use a hand blender it's easy just keep buzzing till it looks like butter and milk, then rinse the blob under the tap.

It goes rancid way quicker than shop butter so u need to eat a lot

iamnotalemon · 23/01/2025 18:37

I'm sure if we stop paying these ridiculous prices, they would reduce them!

Particularly if it's not really an essential item
