Making your own butter seems to be all the rage on social media at the moment.

Google tells me you'd get 200g of butter out of 300ml of double cream plus 100ml of buttermilk.

300ml of double cream = £1.50 at Sainsburys

Shame the Kilner butter churner is about £50 though!

I whisk it in the food processor until it turns to butter. No fancy gadgets needed. You can do it by hand but it’s hard work.

66babe · 23/01/2025 18:41

It's crisps that get me !
A 6 pack would always be on offer for a quid
One week it be French fries another week it be something else
Now it's normal to see them £2-65

Best butter ever.

Agreed, I worry they’re going to do what Aldi does and randomly discontinue it one day!

lifeonmars100 · 23/01/2025 18:44

I was in our local Asda yesterday doing what I used to think of as my "top up" shop which is basically getting in bits for lunches at home, some fresh veg to make soup, salad, a tub of hummus, half a doz eggs , some garlic and a few other bits and bobs, the only treats were a small cake and some biscuits that were on offer and it came to around £25! I am no longer shocked, I am good at budgeting, I menu plan, bulk cook and do not waste food. The other things that struck me were the empty shelves, low stock in the freezers and the general lack of variety.

NinevehBabylon · 23/01/2025 18:46

Why don’t you make your own by putting double cream through a food processor to churn it? It’s not that hard.

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/01/2025 18:47

I buy butter in Home Bargains. They had Lurpak for £1.89 recently. A block that is, not spreadable.

istheheatingonyet · 23/01/2025 18:52

Bulk out your mince with oats.

FFS. We just want to afford nice , healthy food

Cheapest block butters from Ocado.

Olive oil is also incredibly expensive now. On a tip from someone here, I bought a huge carton of cold-pressed rapeseed oil which is much cheaper (unit price) and does a good job.

Rapeseed oil has been linked to the surge in colon cancers in young people. That’s why it’s cheap, it will take years off your life.

Butter is the one thing I keep buying.

I've just stocked up on our favourite butter - President semi-salted - at Tesco. It's on offer at £2.25 for Clubcard holders, usually £3.

I like the President with salt crystals. Very yummy

Finetoday · 23/01/2025 18:55

Does anyone make their own from cream ?
Is it nice ?
Does it last ?

Mrsredlipstick · 23/01/2025 18:56

Don't waste the buttermilk if you make your own. Marinate chicken in it overnight for Southern fried chicken or use for soda bread. Yoghurts are a shocking price too.

No churn needed - a cylindrical cliptop plastic tub and loads of shaking is all that's needed! You can wash and sterilse a couple of pebbles and add those to make it quicker...

I stopped buying butter when it hit £1:45

What do you buy instead?

marshmallowfinder · 23/01/2025 19:01

Sinkintotheswamp · 23/01/2025 16:53

You're better off buying organic butter. It's a few pence cheaper.

It's not. It weighs 200g and the Country Life is 250g, sadly. Shrinkflation.

SpearheadViking · 23/01/2025 19:02

Nancy Birtwhistle had a Instagram post about making your own butter and using the buttermilk up.
I use cold pressed rapeseed oil and will take my chances. I use lard and beef dripping for the meat eaters in the house. Lard is still quite cheap.

Rapeseed oil has been linked to the surge in colon cancers in young people. That’s why it’s cheap, it will take years off your life.

It is not that simple.
The study you refer to involves under 100 people. It also says that they are included in cheap ultra processed foods because they are cheap. So, seed oils were cheap before, not because of an increase in colon cancers. It also isn't proven which, if any specific, oils are linked to the increased inflammation which the researchers believe may be driving an increase in colon cancers. It is a question/suggestion that there may be a link, not a proven causal relationship.

Farmers need to make a living. Cow feed is expensive, as is labour, insurance, vet costs etc etc. Or would you rather we concrete over the countryside and buy our dairy in from maltreated animals living in industrial mega farms in China? You might save a few pence on your butter.

I’m all for farmers getting a fair price for their produce. But with Tesco (for example) making a 2.9billion operating profit last year then I suspect the retailers are the ones benefiting from the increase in prices of what’s in our shopping baskets.

LittleMonks11 · 23/01/2025 19:05

Reminds of when I saw a chicken in Sainsbury's for £25.

TomatoSandwiches · 23/01/2025 19:08

I swear the top supermarkets get together and delegate who gets what products on offer one week and which gets the next and so on.
I am fortunate enough to buy extras of what is on offer that we use and also add to a box for my mum like nice coffee and cordials but the shop just keeps getting more expensive.

Just pour the cream into a large jar and shake ( put lid on first) takes about 10 minutes. Rinse the butter in/ under cold water and squeeze excess out.
You don't need a churn.

Could I do this in a kenwood chef with the whisk attachment then? I like salty butter and therefore I’d like to try.

Yes, absolutely 😊

I'll stick with the view of reputable scientists such as Professor Sarah Berry of the ZOE project and Professor of Population Health and Nutrition at the University of Cambridge, Nita Forouhi, who both say that seed oils are perfectly safe. Also, I didn't say it was cheap. It's a lot cheaper than blended olive oil, but it's not the cheapest blended 'vegetable' oil.

I'm 63, btw. There aren't that many years to take off my life now.

starfishmummy · 23/01/2025 19:13

ChestnutGrove · 23/01/2025 16:59

This shocked me the other day. Who'd pay that? It's on offer now, but wasn't the other day.

I use the decaff variety of that all the time. I never pay full price!

Porcuporpoise · 23/01/2025 19:13

iamnotalemon · 23/01/2025 18:37

I'm sure if we stop paying these ridiculous prices, they would reduce them!

Particularly if it's not really an essential item

Or sell them to other buyers on the international market who are willing to pay for them.

There have been at least two studies published recently linking rapeseed and other seed oils to colon cancer which is imho likely causing rapeseed oil to be even cheaper as the price is demand elastic.

I agree it’s not proven, irrefutable proof takes alot of time and study (and autopsies) to prove harm. With something like cancer, it’s very hard to prove as cancer can be caused by innumerable genetic, pathogen and environmental causes.
