Noticed they had gone up quite a bit recently

It’s butter. Why on earth would anyone buy anything other than the very cheapest option?

Because they prefer it

RobinEllacotStrike · 23/01/2025 20:23

I think Waitrose is cheaper than Sainsbury's these days.

State of it!

It's not. I shop between the two and sainsburys is approx £40 cheaper for my weekly shop.

I’m all for farmers getting a fair price for their produce. But with Tesco (for example) making a 2.9billion operating profit last year then I suspect the retailers are the ones benefiting from the increase in prices of what’s in our shopping baskets.

This. Supermarkets are taking the absolute proverbial.

Rapeseed oil has been linked to the surge in colon cancers in young people. That’s why it’s cheap, it will take years off your life.

Not cold pressed rapeseed oil. That's a luxury product that only makes up a tiny proportion of a very few people's diet.

This shocked me the other day. Who'd pay that? It's on offer now, but wasn't the other day.

Tesco is doing half price on club card! I only get it then.

I buy this from Amazon in bulk-it's about £29 for 6 x 90g

Wallabyone · 23/01/2025 21:22

Actually, it's 6 x 140g-much better value and I drink a lot of it at work.

daisychain01 · 23/01/2025 21:23

I find it really annoying that they now sell those Jasons loaves (eg sour dough) in cellophane bags and when you look at them you realise they baked a whole loaf then cut it in half and still charge £2 for half a loaf.

what a rip off!

Hedjwitch · 23/01/2025 21:24

I make my own yoghurt now. So easy and you don't need the expensive sachets...just milk, some left over live yoghurt from the previous batch, and dried milk powder( optional). Cuts down on plastic tubs too and it's way healthier because it doesn't have added sugar. Agree making butter is easy too. So with butter, bread, yoghurt and soups I'm practically a home made domestic Goddess now! I haven't yet made jam but I have lots of friends who do and are happy to share.

AmusedMaker · 23/01/2025 21:28

Country life is a very superior butter and worth the money imo. Not all butter tastes the same.

That70sHouse · 23/01/2025 21:35

If you want to make yourself feel seriously depressed, go onto your online supermarket shopping app of your choice and scroll all the way back through your orders… find an order from this time last year and see what your total was then click “add all items to basket” or “shop this order again” or similar and see what the price is now 😮

You're better off buying organic butter. It's a few pence cheaper.

YeoValley is only 200g. Be careful

DazzlingCuckoos · 23/01/2025 18:04

Making your own butter seems to be all the rage on social media at the moment.

Google tells me you'd get 200g of butter out of 300ml of double cream plus 100ml of buttermilk.

300ml of double cream = £1.50 at Sainsburys

Shame the Kilner butter churner is about £50 though!

I tried making butter this way with my dc. Very easy, just used a small pot of double cream and shook it in a container until it turned to butter. Got a decent sized butter block from it.

Exactly! Not that hard to work out!!!!!!!! As a pp said, Country Life is an amazing butter, it tastes delicious, and no, all butters do NOT taste the same!

MikeRafone · 24/01/2025 07:29

I popped to M&S for a few nice things and got their niice butter - it was £2.85 jerky butter with salt

MikeRafone · 24/01/2025 07:30

Sainsbury have to make up for their Aldi price match in other places and butter is a staple household grocery shop

id go for French butters, particularly president to my taste they are nicer but everyone is tasting things differently

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/01/2025 07:32

Aldi: its version of Lurpak is nicer and cheaper and the coffee alternative was £2 something the last time I bought some. Wouldn’t know the difference.

Make it in a stand food mixer or even a blender, I use a lot of butter and have been making my own for a few years now

Farmers need to make a living. Cow feed is expensive, as is labour, insurance, vet costs etc etc. Or would you rather we concrete over the countryside and buy our dairy in from maltreated animals living in industrial mega farms in China? You might save a few pence on your butter.

If you think the added cost of this ( and other products ) are going direct to farmers / producers you are deluded .

We tried switching to cheaper brands of real butter but were unhappy. Now we just stock up when it goes on sale.

I use free cream I get off olio

Does it matter what temperature the cream is: fridge-cold or room-temperature?

forgotmyusername1 · 24/01/2025 19:29

I just use it from the fridge
