Your food costs are one of the most expensive in the world right now, even higher than Australia's I think, but your gas/petrol is much cheaper, and your salaries are much higher and tax lower.

Yup. Healthcare costs a fortune though!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/01/2025 20:11

On the Ocado website I always sort by price per unit, e.g price per 100g or per kg, as shown on the screenshot I attached upthread. I would have assumed that the largest packs always have the lowest price per unit, but they don't.

AdoraBell · 23/01/2025 20:13

Yep, prices are out of control.

TroysMammy · 23/01/2025 20:18

I look on trolley uk to see prices and offers but I'm not loyal to one supermarket.

BloominNora · 23/01/2025 20:18

The Trolly website is good for checking prices. We normally shop at Aldi but it is turning into a bit of a PITA so I was looking at getting a delivery - but the top 40 items we tend to buy most weeks into lists for each supermarket to see which came closes to the Aldi prices (unfortunately none were cheaper, but Tesco was the closest at about £9 more (before clubcard deals, then Sainsbury's, then Asda)

Went to Sainsbury's this afternoon . Wow !

Well you can’t get a better bit of butter on your knife! 🎶

RobinEllacotStrike · 23/01/2025 20:23

I think Waitrose is cheaper than Sainsbury's these days.

State of it!

EvilNextDoor · 23/01/2025 20:27

@Embarrassinglyuseless

I don’t charge myself to make butter for myself that’s like charging myself to cook dinner

Takes me less than an hour to make enough for my family of 4 to last a week, costs me between 10 & 50p for the double cream, even if I factor in salt/water/electric still cheaper than buying a block at £2-3 each - the kids have informed me it tastes so much better

Now the cost to make home made bread is getting very expensive whereas it used to be so much cheaper than shop bought.

This shocked me the other day. Who'd pay that? It's on offer now, but wasn't the other day.

I’ve been buying this for at least a year now.. never bought it for full price. It always gets reduced to half price and I stock up

IDontLikePinaColadas · 23/01/2025 20:37

We now just buy double cream when it’s about to go off and make our own butter. Prices are mad and it takes about 5mins with an electric mixer.

Zippitydoodaa · 23/01/2025 20:39

My surprise was Options hot chocolate- £5 !!!
I wait till it's on offer at half price.

Oats are healthy.

Of course, but I think you probably get the gist of my frustration.

I like fish, can't afford it. Love good quality fruit, can't afford it. And so on.

oakleaffy · 23/01/2025 20:40

Bo1978 · 23/01/2025 18:08

I saw this too and took a picture! I just couldn’t believe it! Who would buy it at that price?!

I think butter is frequently stolen? Our local supermarket has theft warnings in the butter aisle.

devildeepbluesea · 23/01/2025 20:41

It’s butter. Why on earth would anyone buy anything other than the very cheapest option?

oakleaffy · 23/01/2025 20:42

Fish is really expensive. Salmon and haddock especially. {the main two fish I eat}
Cod is tasteless by comparison.

RollerCoaster2020 · 23/01/2025 19:22

Looks like it takes about one and a half minutes plus squeezing time..

So with nothing to do this evening I gave this method a go! Poured cream into a large bowl and whisked away using my clean hand only. I must have been doing something wrong as it took 18 minutes. However I now have gorgeous homemade butter and a huge right bicep.....

SpearheadViking · 23/01/2025 20:50

I use butter for my toast/bread but the rest of the family like margarine(yuk).
I want to try the whipping butter and adding either olive oil or rapeseed to make it spreadable. Instead of margarine.
I love my butter dish and little butter curler.

Roryno · 23/01/2025 20:55

Butter prices were really high about 18 months ago, then dropped down. Looks like they’re rising again 😔 (I buy a lot as I bake for my cafe). A lot of the big brand butters mentioned on this thread are owned by Arla dairies, who are trialing things to stop the cows producing methane. I’m trying to avoid them.

TimeForATerf · 23/01/2025 20:58

I make my own when I see yellow sticker double cream. You don’t get as much as you think from a large carton though it is really easy to make. Four minutes in the Artisan mixer. Then I rinse in iced water and add sea salt flakes and pat to shape in grease proof paper.

You can’t really leave it out of the fridge for long or it goes off, but it freezes really well, so I freeze in small portions. You also get great freezable butter milk for scones.

the best part is, it’s the nicest, creamiest butter you will ever taste.

lovemycbf · 23/01/2025 20:59

66babe · 23/01/2025 18:41

It's crisps that get me !
A 6 pack would always be on offer for a quid
One week it be French fries another week it be something else
Now it's normal to see them £2-65

And some are now only a five pack!!

Instakilogram · 23/01/2025 21:00

I find Sainsburys to be quite pricey. Morrisons as well

mandarinchocolate · 23/01/2025 21:00

cleowasmycat · 23/01/2025 18:27

Best butter ever.

Agree

Frostine · 23/01/2025 15:31

Went to Sainsbury's this afternoon . Wow !

Crazy yeah, but as has been said, prices are high everywhere. Even in Morrisons it's about £3.00 some weeks. (Other weeks it's £2,75.) Asda had it for £3.25 a couple of months ago!

I won't stop buying it though, as it's my favourite butter, I don't want a cheaper alternative, and it lasts DH and I about a month.

Nsky62 · 23/01/2025 21:01

Sinkintotheswamp · 23/01/2025 16:53

You're better off buying organic butter. It's a few pence cheaper.

Exactly
lofe president butter, expensive then french
