What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Sainsbury's mayonnaise rather than the utterly exorbitant Hellmanns. Ditto Batt's from Lidl.

Dahliasrule · 01/03/2024 12:49

We prefer Tesco tomato sauce to Heinz and it is at least half the price.

Maxwellfatcat · 01/03/2024 12:52

The Aldi instant coffee that come in a metal can and is a powder - not the big granules like Nescafé. Can’t even think what brand it’s ripping off now but it’s definitely nicer!

Startyabastard · 01/03/2024 12:53

I never buy branded stuff, always own brand because I've never had much money. It's always been fine.

That's the thing though, with food it's surely what your taste buds prefer, its not a case of being better or worse

I've tried some of the things mentioned above and I dont like the taste, I'd rather eat something different than a cheaper version that I dont like, I'd thought that would be normal

Barbarachicken · 01/03/2024 12:56

Quite a lot of the Tesco 'dupes' as my teen would say, are pretty good. Anti bac cleaning spray, weetabix, baked beans, jelly babies (although bit too much flour dusting!), tinned toms, cheerios, cheapest kitchen roll in a jumbo roll, juice etc etc

KirstenBlest · 01/03/2024 12:57

I bought some Tesco own brand 'weetabix' and they were inedible.

LamonicBibber1 · 01/03/2024 12:57

Whoever said waitrose upthread- I agree.

I had weeks of online shopping being terrible from Morrisons, so I switched to them. Did a week's shop for five for around £110.

Did have to avoid SO many delicious temptations and mostly buy the essentials range but it actually saved some money, because I wasn't having to throw away Morrisons tomatoes/fruit/peppers which were rotten on day two, or the rock hard bread, less was missing or substituted, and Waitrose sausages are so much better. Less wastage from the kids, better quality so less binning.

However realistically I can't afford a proper all encompassing shop from there, like lots of fresh meat or anything. it would be significantly more in total. Better quality but out of my financial reach. But for basics and well picked meals, it was surprisingly affordable. The problem is that we miss it 😅

Barbarachicken · 01/03/2024 13:00

@LakeTiticaca genius 😆

egowise · 01/03/2024 13:00

Aldi's version of Campo viejo. Their premium versions are often cheaper than Campo's standard.

MorrisZapp · 01/03/2024 13:06

Waitrose reverse snobbery can hop it. DS loves own brand shreddies and it's £1.50 for a huge box in Waitrose. Same price as everywhere else for familiar brands such as Muller etc.

I don't get everything there, but I do get loads of basics and a few treats. They often have promotions on my fave chocolate - Ritter Sport. They have amazing post seasonal reductions too.

Absolutely. I shop in Waitrose (with the occasional foray to Lidl) and I'm on state pension with a small private one so not splashing the cash all around. OK, I'm not the one buying organic chicken breasts (£ 13 a pop the other day 😧) but then I wouldn't have paid that even when I could afford it. They have some great reductions on basics.

WimbyAce · 01/03/2024 13:20

I have move over to mainly own brand now, even tea bags I buy from Lidl. Only thing I still struggle with is Branston Beans.

Cyberpixie · 01/03/2024 13:27

Fabulosa cream cleaner, way better than cif, smells nicer (snow fairy scent) and is cheap.

Tesco washing machine water softener tablets for limescale. No different to calgon.

FloralQuestions · 01/03/2024 13:57

This might have been mentioned above, but supermarket own brand dishwasher tablets are as good, if not better, than Fairy or Finish!

Oh yes, and in fact the Lidl version is even nicer - it's the Nescafe Azera rip off :)

Debtfreegoals · 01/03/2024 14:17

Morrisons light mayo is around £1 and tastes the exact same to light hellmans and that’s more like £2.50. Lidl own butter is very good

ladygindiva · 01/03/2024 09:14

Tesco own nappies and pull-ups. Far superior to the brand names.

Lies. They're fine, but they're not nearly as nice as pampers

@LakeTiticaca genius 😆

I scrolled back to try and find the genius suggestion only to find it was putting stuff in a branded box, underwhelmed 😀

Co-op own brand tomato ketchup. It has a much higher percentage of tomatoes than Heinz and is really tasty also cheaper. Never thought I'd buy anything but Heinz! Also Tesco tomato soup, just as good as Heinz.

Aren't you a delight! @shoppingshamed

(Have I done it right) 🙄

Jay3004 · 01/03/2024 14:34

Not food related but I’ve started using the Primark dupe of Estée Lauder double wear. It’s £5 compared to £39 and I actually prefer it and think it lasts longer!

colouringindoors · 01/03/2024 14:37

Tisfortired · 01/03/2024 11:33

M&S ketchup is the same as/better than Heinz.

It’s also £1 a bottle vs £4/£5.

This from a die hard Heinz ketchup snob who would rather STARVE than buy own brand ketchup.

oh will have to try that! Sains and Waitrose's have had the thumbs down here!

m and s tinned soup, all their cereal is great.

sains tinned plum tomoatoes are excellent, really thick tomato juice with them, almost like passata.

Hellmans mayo is one of the last branded items I buy now, thinking about it 🤔

Sgtmajormummy · 01/03/2024 14:38

Lidl’s version of Cillit Bang. It got tea stains out of my Fragranite sink when I’d given up.
