What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Ooh I forgot about marmite I’ll try the Asda one. Thank you.

Ulysees · 01/03/2024 10:35

Theraffarian · 01/03/2024 10:33

Asda own brand marmite . A bit thinner than actual marmite , but tastes pretty much the same . Was one of those things I always said I wouldn’t swap , but was recommended on here a while back on a similar thread so gave it a go . Can’t see I would swap back now . £1.99 v £3.10

That's a huge saving. DH found 2 unopened jars of marmite the other day. Maybe I should sell them on marketplace 🤣

Nicky Elite toilet paper - cheaper and better than the rest.

Snap! I hope the price doesn't increase.

Bjorkdidit · 01/03/2024 10:27

@Mrsjayy

We're the same with M&S. They're among the cheapest, or the same price as anywhere else for milk, white sliced bread, big blocks of cheddar cheese, mixed size free range eggs, cans of soup, beans, tomatoes and a lot of 'basic' veg, eg potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli. Plus they have good reductions and good value meal deal offers and it always feels like a bit of a treat to shop there.

yea my mum goes to M&S for essentials during the week I think the bread is 75p or something.

Tarkan · 01/03/2024 10:40

I went to M&S for their cheaper bread once and they didn't have any so I got the £1.50 farmhouse one instead and it's absolutely gorgeous. DC always ask me to buy the "nice bread" when I go there. We pay close to that for just normal Hovis or Warburtons in our local shop anyway so I much prefer spending the money on the M&S one now.

Great thread btw

DS insists Aldi baked beans are the best. I don't eat them so I can't verify.

Couldn't agree more. Especially the Red cans. I think they call them Corale beans.

Also, all of the Batts condiments range that I've tried from Lidl. The Brown Sauce is excellent - actually better than HP or Daddies, same with the Horseradish. The English mustard is the best. I actually did a taste test alongside Colmans, and although close, I chose the Batts. Price for the same size jar? Colmans £1.70 Batts 59p!

Just about everything, in most cases, the 'leading brands' have just spent more on advertising. In blind tasting, they perform poorly, especially Heinz.

M&S or Waitrose tomato soup at about 50 p a tin is loads nicer than Heinz.

they’re not 50p^^

LamonicBibber1 · 01/03/2024 10:46

I'm evangelical about Farmfoods (if you avoid the processed shit as much as possible).

2.5kg of chicken breast mini fillets for £9.99. When defrosted they are much better quality than the chewy, badly butchered and more expensive breast fillets from Morrisons. They are just as good as fresh and dont seem to leak loads of gross water like the Morrisons ones do when cooking.

They have 600g frozen berries x 3 for approx £7. I got a whole frozen side of salmon for £5.99 after Christmas. Good basics like cheap coconut milk, extra virgin olive oil, proper butter, mature cheddar. Cheaper for stuff like babybels and sliced meats, nuts and their freezer veg is good quality.

Harrington's dog biscuits also much cheaper there, and I always get the toilet rolls on offer. Plus they do money off vouchers and you can use more than one voucher per shop Love them! Some things there are not good though, a lot of frozen junk food, a wall of a thousand fizzy drinks crates (I hate fizzy drinks) and some random things can be weirdly overpriced. Also they often have random decent items for a while and then never stock it again, which is a shame. But overall they've saved me a fortune.

And they had Kitchen Aid stand mixers for 299 last time I went in! Sadly I can't afford one but that is DAMN cheap 😅

ssd · 01/03/2024 10:47

Sorry @Ulysees , just went back to read the whole thread incase i missed anything out, did you actually say Heinz soup was £2.50 a tin in Morrisons???

Think i need a lie down ShockShock

ReadtheReviews · 01/03/2024 10:49

Branston baked beans.
Own brand weetabix and rice crispies
Basic pasta.

HangryDoughnut · 01/03/2024 10:28

Lidl's mayonaise is the closest to Hellman's I can find, I've found most own brand mayonaise completely inedible!

Agree! Forgot about the Mayo, especially the Light Mayo. Another score for the Batts brand!

Goforitagain · 01/03/2024 10:52

Waitrose tomato ketchup

Bjorkdidit · 01/03/2024 10:58

fruity81 · 01/03/2024 10:45

they’re not 50p^^

Fair enough, it's gone up to 70/75p, but I haven't bought it in a while because, as my previous post, I'm still working my way through stocks of cans I bought when they were 50/55p.

Still massively cheaper than Heinz though, as well as being nicer.

DrJoanAllenby · 01/03/2024 11:03

Aldi butter croissants are nicer than M&S as ones.

Lidl Kit Kats are nicer than Nestle Kit Kats.

ConsistentlyElectrifiedElves · 01/03/2024 11:13

Bit random, but water softener tablets for the washing machine. Calgon - £16 for 45 tablets in Asda, own brand ones at Ocado £4.25 for 45!

Oh, and I'd never pay the price of Nurofen unless I was absolutely desperate. 45p for 16 200mg tablets in or £2 for Nurofen.

I will always disagree about cheaper loo roll though. Cushelle quilted over anything in our house. Cheap loo roll just means you have to use more IMO!

Dee1224 · 01/03/2024 11:16

I’m a huge fan of Lidl sushi, (not an essential, I know😹). Swapped to buying Lidl washing powder - it’s great. Waitrose and M&S are the cheapest place to buy ‘basic’ free range eggs - about £1.30 for 6.

I really like the Aldi frothy coffee sachets - they mix better than the Nescafé and are half the price.

Asda baked beans are fine - family stopped complaining after I switched from Heinz, after a few forays into other ‘own brands’.

IMO, Tesco cornflakes are the only non-Kellogg cornflakes that taste anything near the original!

WoodBurningStov · 01/03/2024 11:18

We shop at Aldi and I'd say most things are either better or the same - the only exception is fabric softener, the Aldi one isn't as good as say Comfort or Lenor.

I love the Aldi tomato soup.

Noneofourbusiness · 01/03/2024 11:23

Fantastic thread. Thank you op.

We have switched nearly everything we buy, a lot of items have already been mentioned on this post. We still buy heinz mayo and hp brown sauce. I highly recommend the cheap supermarkets brand tin foil and Tesco version of tampax. Also tesco/aldi stock cubes are good.

Spuds88 · 01/03/2024 11:23

Aldi for cereal, in particular their “Special K” I can’t eat the Kelloggs one now as it’s too sugary! Little legs loves the Aldi “Cheerios”…less than £1 per box vs £3-odd!

Aldi again for pasta sauces for lazy days, 59p vs £2/3. Both kids have said they’re much tastier.

Waitrose pesto is £1.90 and made with a handful of recognisable ingredients, and the only oil is olive oil. Sacla is £3.50 for the same size and full of shite.

Edited

I buy Aldi pesto now because once when Scalia had a recall because of a cashew cross contamination so did Aldi.

LightSpeeds · 01/03/2024 11:31

Tesco's 'Weetabix'.

Asda Baked Beans.

Tisfortired · 01/03/2024 11:33

M&S ketchup is the same as/better than Heinz.

It’s also £1 a bottle vs £4/£5.

This from a die hard Heinz ketchup snob who would rather STARVE than buy own brand ketchup.

DS will only have the waitrose one! It's brilliant.

The only toothpaste I ever use is wisdom sensitive, stocked in the poundshop. I laugh at the toothpaste shelf anywhere else.
