What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Waitrose own brand washing powder/liquid. Excellent and about half the cost of Persil etc

In its defence, the passion fruit daily shower spray is amazing. I did try a cheap one but it caught the back of my throat and made me cough
Sticking with the method as it lasts me a while!

method granite cleaner and also it’s stainless silver cleaner are the only branded cleaning product i bother to buy. I’ve tried them all and these are the best!

Aren't you a delight! @shoppingshamed

(Have I done it right) 🙄

I was hoping for something to make my life easier not the oldest trick in the book, sue me for being disappointed 😀

Most things are just as good in my experience. I buy the supermarket's own brand for everything.

Aldis liquid washing powder is just as good if not better than the Ariel liquid.

And their marmite

Deffo Aldi marmite!

StrawberryEater · 01/03/2024 15:29

Waitrose berry granola. £2.75 for a kg bag. It’s half the price (per g) of Jordans or Dorset Cereals.

VimtoVimto · 01/03/2024 15:47

Lidl Luxury Nut granola is the best I’ve tasted. Aldi ketchup is better than Heinz.

Before I moved it was as easy to nip into M&S Simply Food than the local Tesco Express and generally not any more expensive. Once I was buying Kellogg Coco Pops and couldn’t believe it was cheaper in M&S than Tesco Express (and that was after I didn’t buy it in M&S because I thought Tesco would be cheaper).

Fizbosshoes · 01/03/2024 15:56

Aldi ketchup is better than Heinz.

Nooooo! I strongly disagree!
I made the mistake of buying it once, I'm the only person in my family that eats it and it took so long to get through the bottle as it wasn't so awful I couldn't eat it but it was a relief to finish it ! So I've gone back to heinz. We prob only buy a max of 2 bottles a year though so not too extravagant unlike the ridiculous amount of mayo we seem to get through

Butterflytown · 01/03/2024 16:39

I hardly buy any brands. There are loads of things where the supermarket own is just as good/ better and miles cheaper such as:
•Lidl own brand Jaffa cakes- miles better than the original
lidl own brand lurpack- think it’s called Danpack
lidl formal washing liquid- about a third of the price of persil
lidl loo roll- quilted is just as good as andrex
lidl own brand beans are decent although I prefer branston (not a Heinz fan).

can you guess where I shop??!

The only think I’m not keen on is Lidl/aldi bran flakes or shreddies although I buy other supermarket own brand of those. the only thing I can think of where I regularly buy branded is hellmans mayonnaise and most toiletry products- toothpaste, shampoo etc. And some cleaning products- love the smell of method and they seem less chemical-y.

gerteddy · 01/03/2024 16:57

M&S soups at around 75p are so much nicer than Heinz! I don't get to M&S often so have bought Morrisons own brand to try prob not as gd but well the price difference is crazy!

Heinz ketchup is eye watering it now too. I switched to own brand years ago because sure of that but wow it's about £4 for a big bottle now.

Same with dishwasher tablets always bought finish and they were so expensive. Switched to a cheap brand and it's about 1/4 of the cost!

I swapped from fairy pods too as they were getting too expensive. I use Aldi or Morrisons own brand and both are fab I still use a nice fabric softener so they still smell lovely.

I haven't found anything that replicates lurpak butter. The best one was Morrisons but na I'd rather pay extra and get the lurpak.

I tried Morrisons savers houmus this week it was alright but not sure I wld switch.

Many products are produced at the same factory and are pretty much the same but cheaper.
My kids refused to eat any other coco pops but Kelloggs.
I bought one box of kelloggs and kept refilling it with own brand .
They never twigged on 😅😅

🤣🤣🤣

If you use washing powder that's lumpy, use boiling water to dissolve it.

TheFormidableMrsC · 01/03/2024 17:15

Aldi washing up liquid. See also nappies (although it's been a while) and wipes. I think their version of Wotsits are better than the brand, same with baked beans. Their Norpak spreadable is very comparable to Lurpak.

TinaCx · 01/03/2024 17:17

Shower gel has same ingredients than the same brand bubble bath. When my family was all living at home I just poured the bubble bath into the shower gel bottles. No one was any of the wiser. I still use cheap bubble bath that I pour into my hand soap bottles. It gets washed off anyway and it's much more economical.

BCBird · 01/03/2024 17:18

Asda baked beans

dottiedodah · 01/03/2024 17:24

Sainsburys tomato ketchup is great ! 1.45 for a big bottle .Most stuff is own brand now

dottiedodah · 01/03/2024 17:25

Also my friend swears by Superdrug own toothpaste .Only £1.00!

Put it straight into the drum not into the drawer and it won't clog the pipe, told that by the bloke that came to fix my washing machine years ago, he showed me the pipe and it was solid with powder.

I prefer to use boiling water because you won't have residue on your colored clothes either, especially on a cooler wash.

fruity81 · 02/03/2024 06:45

lumpy powder? just use a fork to break it up 🤷‍♀️

fruity81 · 02/03/2024 06:46

certainly don’t put it straight in the drum as my fitter said.

TinaCx · 01/03/2024 09:11

Aldi nappies. They're better and so much more affordable than the top brand.

Tesco nappies are decent as well. Big pack for less than £2.50.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 02/03/2024 11:40

Lidl tartare sauce is better than colmans

Ulysees · 02/03/2024 11:45

I had lidl salsa in a jar last night. Doritos is better imo. Although I prefer homemade but I had enough prep for tea so was being lazy. DH normally cooks but he's not been well with the lurgy/chest infection so I've been doing it.

Yes, I refill nice containers for both the shower and sink. I use this one. It was a quid for years, but has jumped up a little bit recently. Still good value though and smells lovely.
