What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Winiary Mayonnaise is better than Hellmans. It's £2.25 for 400Ml, in Tesco.

Came on to say this.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 01/03/2024 11:47

Waitrose essentials tomato ketchup is just as nice as Heinz and less than half the price. I saw it on tv on a blind test years ago and have bought it ever since.

Nicky Elite toilet paper - cheaper and better than the rest.

Got to agree with this! Aldi loo roll, however, is dreadful.

nearlymrs · 01/03/2024 11:57

Morrisons savers liquid laundry detergent. I tried it when nothing else was on offer and it's been great, washes clothes the same as any other detergent, using the same amount per wash, and the smell lasts. £2 for a litre.

I didn't realise the one I bought was scented until my lady garden felt like it was on fire 🔥

So that wasn't a saving for me as gave it all away to a more bomb proof vulva owner!

YourWinter · 01/03/2024 11:59

Nicky loo roll is far too thick and our septic tank doesn’t cope with it. My favourite and best value is Tesco Spring Force double rolls.
Tesco white vinegar, and condensed milk.

Aldi for Almat laundry powder, organic acacia runny honey, organic porridge oats, coconut milk, Bilash mango chutney, Lacura face creams and serum, and the lime No 1 handwash in the square bottle smells lovely. My cats only have a handful of dry food at bedtime and they like the Aldi salmon one, but neither cat will eat Aldi wet food.

Home Bargains dog poo bags, black with tie handles, also great as nappy sacks when DGS is here, also their wild bird food is great value.

M&S herbal teabags, nicer and cheaper than Pukka, and as I actually like instant coffee I prefer their “Rich and Smooth” one, tastes like the Waitrose version but always cheaper.

I prefer Fairy washing up liquid, Branston beans, Mutti chopped tomatoes and Meridian peanut butter.

Cosycover · 01/03/2024 12:02

Asda cheese and the frozen garlic baguettes. They are 37p and amazing.

Lorrymum · 01/03/2024 12:08

M&S baked beans, other brands become hard when heated. Also only 45p a large tin. I started buying own brand M&S food during covid lock downs. So many other shops sold out of essentials but good old Markies were always stocked.

We stopped buying Aldi toilet roll when they decided they would make it scented!
Asda Shades is pretty good, it’s cheaper than the elite too.

My youngest says the 39p doughnuts from lidl are the best doughnuts he's ever had.

locket2009 · 01/03/2024 12:16

Aldis liquid washing powder is just as good if not better than the Ariel liquid.

And their marmite

locket2009 · 01/03/2024 12:16

Oh and Aldi's 100% peanut butter

skyfalldown · 01/03/2024 12:18

Everything. I never buy branded - half the time it's all been produced in the same factory anyway and just packaged with the store label or the branded label.

The only exception to this is mayonnaise. Own brand is 🤮, needs to be Hellmans or Heinz!

fourelementary · 01/03/2024 09:15

Only on mumsnet would Waitrose be seen as downscaling. 🤣

Can get Sacla much cheaper than that in B&M!

Tiredgrumpyhormones · 01/03/2024 12:26

Aldi coconut and Shea butter shower gel. 55p smells great, skin feel great and lasts ages

LakeTiticaca · 01/03/2024 12:30

Many products are produced at the same factory and are pretty much the same but cheaper.
My kids refused to eat any other coco pops but Kelloggs.
I bought one box of kelloggs and kept refilling it with own brand .
They never twigged on 😅😅

KirstenBlest · 01/03/2024 12:41

@YourWinter , I was going to say Tesco Spring Force double rolls!

Lidl own brand washing-up liquid and washing powder is fine.
Ecover didn't work for me.

PuppyMonkey · 01/03/2024 12:41

Morrisons wheat biscuits - also their dry roasted peanuts and fresh orange juice!

Aldi beans, chocolate and wine.

Crucible · 01/03/2024 12:41

Can recommend all these from the 67p Tesco range, they're lovely soups.

What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

@Mrsjayy

We're the same with M&S. They're among the cheapest, or the same price as anywhere else for milk, white sliced bread, big blocks of cheddar cheese, mixed size free range eggs, cans of soup, beans, tomatoes and a lot of 'basic' veg, eg potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli. Plus they have good reductions and good value meal deal offers and it always feels like a bit of a treat to shop there.

Yeah M&S have been cheapest for these basics and for cereals and butter (real butter, not the spreadable shite) for a good couple of years now. And unlike other supermarkets their prices don't madly fluctuate. Their own brand mayo including flavoured varieties like smoked garlic (don't knock it till you've tried it) is also very good and cheap.

Waitrose is cheapest for bog roll, their essentials range is cheaper than Tesco even with that crap three tier pricing nonsense they have going on, they often have brilliant offers on frozen food and their fresh fish is great plus is money off on Fridays.

I've stopped going to mid range supermarkets now - I got so stressed with them cocking around with their pricing and I don't want to hand over my data to Christ knows who just to avoid being even more overcharged. I know what things I can get that are decent quality and consistently priced good value from Waitrose and M&S. The rest I get from Aldi or Home Bargains.

Just as an aside, who the fuck is buying Heinz? All their products are now ludicrously expensive everywhere.

WGACA · 01/03/2024 12:45

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/03/2024 09:30

Oh and ASDA smart essentials lightly salted tortilla chips (£0.51) are the best.

Agree!

smoothieooo · 01/03/2024 12:47

Aldi marmite (yeast extract). Not just cheaper but gluten free! I hadn't had Marmite for years prior to that discovery.

Always buy own brand Tesco ketchup (Heinz is eye-wateringly expensive), same for baked beans. Can't find a decent alternative to Fairy washing up liquid though!

LamonicBibber1 · 01/03/2024 12:47

Polish mayonnaise/majonez is the BEST and always cheaper.

I get the Morrisons £1 big bottle of bath creme and decant into shower gel/hand wash bottles. (Although I've been using various cheap bar soaps and the kids prefer them now). I buy 5l tubs of shampoo when it's on offer and decant that, too. Usually Faith In Nature. It's not the cheapest around but certainly cheaper than the small bottles.

I get 500 dishwasher tablets a time off eBay, whichever are cheapest. Vastly cheaper than from the supermarket. And bulk buy 5l or 10l of rinse aid from there.

I was buying mid range own brand supermarket laundry liquid but I tried some of the squishy pod things on offer, and they did a better job. So I'm probably spending more on laundry pods now (but the clothes smell and feel cleaner). Or maybe not, because I'm not using more than I should of the cheaper version, ie false economy.

The massive bags of Wagg working dog biscuits are tax free and cheaper, sadly my dog likes little sized biscuits and they are too big for her mouth to crunch, so we had to switch 😅 But she can manage them if I remember to presoak them a bit.

Pleiades2020 · 01/03/2024 12:47

M&S Bran Flakes. Sainsbury's are OK too but M&S best, much nicer than Kelloggs. Actually Morrisons are good too but I don't have one nearby.
