Refugees

Am I wrong to feel the people of this country are using the "Cost of Living" narrative to justify not helping migrants and refugees who seek refuge for themselves? Neglecting our British values, passing the buck to Rwanda and European countries. The attitude towards those fleeing war zones and risking everything to come to this country on harsh waters is outrageous!

I was in the corner shop today and over heard a couple of women making digs about foreigners. To make unjustified claims such as "it makes us unsafe", "we don't have jobs" or my personal favourite - "they don't integrate into society." What on earth has happened to our British values? To make others feel welcome and to help others in need of help!

Every human has a right to safety, affordable housing, food, water, education and a healthcare system. Those are all things our wonderful country can provide and quite frankly has a moral obligation to provide for those coming from other parts of the world that aren't as fortunate as us.

British values have been exploited.

By whom?

Do you honestly believe all of the men arriving on boats are escaping war torn countries? And if they are, why have they left the women and children behind?

InayaWoo · 04/02/2024 07:44

Ywudu · 04/02/2024 07:29

We need to start helping the women, children, families suffering war and persecution who do not have the means to get here. If we actually helped people most in need to gain asylum and stopped taking young male economic migrants who want an easy life people wouldn't have these views.

That’s bigoted. Those cultures work very differently, the man is the provider and therefore supports the family.

Women come here as well. Why does it matter? They have rights.

Don’t you think those fleeing war are more of priority? I believe we deserve equal rights and opportunities. Most are fleeing war, but other reasons are very valid.

What are other valid reasons?
Because economic migration is a whole other story...

Those reason are valid. Humans have moved around the world for centuries! This whole nations and border thing is modern concept that is diabolical.

I think the idea of multiculturalism is dead. When people immigrated in the past this country had principles that people wanted to embrace like free speech and proud history. Now this country can't offer anything. That's why people don't integrate into the society and form their own communities.

What’s wrong with forming a community? Multiculturalism is having fierce push back for reasons that are unjustified.

Isn't that one of the issues we can read between the lines in the Scandinavian study?
There are huge cultural differences that make integration nore difficult?

betterangels · 04/02/2024 07:50

Diabolical? What's diabolical is fucking attacking a woman and child with a 'corrosive substance'. For any reason.

hattie43 · 04/02/2024 07:51

Multiculturalism doesn't work no matter how much it's forced down our throats .

The rise and rise of thousands of young men who do not share our culture or democratic values is a huge worry .

carrotbagel · 04/02/2024 07:51

No I think people who were anti immigration will just be anti immigration whatever I don't feel the cost of living crisis has made a difference

That’s not relevant to what we’re discussing. Stop fear mongering people about asylum seekers. This is an isolated incident has nothing to do with the fact the perpetrator was an asylum seeker.

OP, people do not have the right to go wherever they wish. I don't, you don't. They don't. Whether you like it or not.

And unfortunately there has been a constant stream of negative news stories related to immigration, gangs of south asian men systematically raping & trafficking young British girls, groups of immigrant parents threatening British teachers and trying to limit or narrow British education. Honour killings, fgm, trafficking women from Eastern Europe.

These are the issues that grab the headlines. There is no news value about a newly arrived family settling in a town, going to school & work, happily making friends, joining in the local community.

So people hear much more about the negative and react accordingly.

You dictating to them what they must do, will only make things worse and have the opposite result. Educating & encouraging understanding is the only way to progress.

Nothing to do with asylum. Just another man inflicting violence on women. It's a age old tale

Maybe we should just ban men

What about all the other cases where men from different cultures exploit our young women and girls?

Again, odd topic. This thread is not about that so I don’t know why it’s being hijacked.

It feeds into the narrative that Muslim men think woman are less thans , not equal , chattels . we don't know why he did this but if it turns out it's ' honour' related no-one will be surprised

lalalala2 · 04/02/2024 08:00

What about the millions of £ a test the government is paying to house them?

Yes I get that you must've desperate to risk your life on a boat across the channel, however the UK is not the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

People come here precisely because they think they are going to get houses, fed and given money. In the current economy we as a country don't have endless money to do so.

It's sad but we should be looking after our citizens first and foremost. The industry I work in I'm seeing entire families homeless and councils not able to help

You know nothing about the culture, millions of Muslims live and work in this country with no problems. We should be doing more to help other refugees.

'That’s bigoted. Those cultures work very differently, the man is the provider and therefore supports the family.'

But not in British culture. Here, men and women are (supposed to be) equal. And the whole point is that those coming into the UK surely want to be part of British culture or they would choose somewhere else to live.

Being British (to me at least) means being able to worship freely, being allowed to love whoever you want, men and women being equal, science-based education for all and children have rights. Immigrants don't get to change that.

I wouldn't try to dance around Karachi in a bikini because I have more respect for Pakistani culture and realise that would cause shock and upset. I expect the same respect from those who come to the UK.

People can’t just go wherever they want and that’s the end of that. I can’t just rock up to Australia without a job and money behind me and that should be the same here

Exactly. It's a bizarre notion that anyone can go anywhere.
