I was going to have lunch with a friend today who suggested weatherspoons (cheap and cheerful). I could not believe that their 3 small plates have increased from £10 to £15! Which led me onto thinking what else has jumped up a considerable amount product wise! We shop at Aldi so I haven't noticed a big difference YET.

Yes this is shocking; it’s a fucking basic staple! Who still buys branded I don’t know.

StrawberriesSW1 · 17/05/2023 14:59

What's the best priced choc-ice, ice-cream or gelato?

Eudaimonia5 · 20/05/2023 14:00

I sent my daughter to our local Co-op earlier to get some crisps. She called me to say they didn't have my usual ones so I asked how much Quavers are. She said "£2.25, same price as Walkers".

£2.25 for a six pack of Quavers!!! I told her not to bother. Walkers used to be £1.50 for a six pack but they've been creeping up to £1.95 a few weeks ago, and now up to £2.25.

The price increases are getting eye watering. Yes, I can live without crisps but everything is going up so much.

I see this all the time in the big supermarkets but home bargains and B&M can do it much cheaper! Yet the press tells us that they’re not profiteering.

Are there some numbers on how much B&M et al pay for things like milk and also, from experience the food is all very much super long lasting, cheap to store, high turnover, no need for kore than 1 fridge in store, short bb dates stuff.
It's never cheap out of goodness of their heart

I should have said I was specifically speaking about things like crisps, chocolates and biscuits. I’d never buy any milk/bread/cheese etc from there.

Emigratingimmigrant · 21/05/2023 12:19

I think lots of aavings come from the overall running of shop costs. Plus I had quite a lot with shorter bb dates than before. So they probably buy cheaper. There was an online shop selling after bb dates non perishables extremely cheap. Not sure if that still runs. Can't remember the name🙄

I’ve noticed the food in B&M is cheaper but they’re of a smaller size, you have to be careful.

thatsn0tmyname · 21/05/2023 15:16

The cats Sheba has gone from £12 to £16.50. And they've reduced the quality of the fish meat in it. The cats lick the jelly off and leave the meat. We are slaves to our cats.

Same goes for poundland and not just food. Toothpastes etc are also smaller. Always have been

Or sometimes imported from countries where they sell the same brands but with slightly different ingredients, which may or may not bother you.

This is definitely the case - eg smaller packs of flakes. The packets of veg in places like Aldi are usually smaller too.

There were some programmes on TV about various stores and "how they do it" and Aldi or was it Lidl ( Probably both) care less about stacking , overall store impression etc. I am happy eg to pay more for milk if I know it is going to the farmers. I like supermarkets who get supplies from affiliated growers and producers as opposed to who is cheapest at the time.

I went shopping to day for the first time in 3 weeks as have been on hols and My Goodness the prices are shocking - not across the board but on certain items. 1 broccoli head was 79p. I can see how difficult it must be to feed a family nutritious meals when on a tight budget.

Not my picture but seen on facebook today, shocking Shock its very scary how much prices have risen and are continuing to do so each week

£5.39 for a packet of digestives!

RosesAndHellebores · 23/05/2023 07:59

A packet of chocolate digestives is £1.75 in Tescos. £1.35 with Clubcard.

ancientgran · 23/05/2023 09:46

Lidl does a chocolate digestive that is very good and about half the price unless it has gone up recently.

£1.55 on Ocado. I have no idea where people find these photos

BarbaraofSeville · 23/05/2023 10:00

It's probably the price of the twin pack and a smaller pack is in the wrong place.

I know things have gone up, but wouldn't you just buy something else? I highly doubt that's the only chocolate biscuits that shop has, so unless you have some sort of chocolate biscuit emergency which means you need them now and could only possibly have that type, no-one's ever going to pay that price unless they have more money than sense.

MidnightMeltdown · 23/05/2023 10:29

I don't tend to retain the price of individual items in the supermarket, so I don't notice when the price goes up. However, I have noticed that overall, you get less for a typical £100 shop.

Have also noticed that cafes and restaurants have hiked their prices. One cup of coffee is close to £4 in a lot of places now.

fluffylampbear · 23/05/2023 11:10

YY to cafes and restaurants. I rarely go these places anyway but now it's becoming less and less. Just a coffee can set you back £4!!

NevieSticks · 23/05/2023 11:31

Pubs too - slightly smaller portions which are OK if price stays similar but the cost of soft drinks has rocketed. 3.50 for a 200 ml of Diet coke - basically a mixer. Robbers!

Scousebloke · 23/05/2023 12:01

Went for a pub lunch with my wife yesterday. I had rump steak, chips and peas. Was advertised at £11. When i got the bill it showed an extra £1,50 becauae i had it cooked medium. Apparently it was an extra £2 if i chose to have it well done. I didnt know whether to laugh or cry. I laughed. Cheeky f#@kers though.

Wow! On one hand, steak and chips for £11 is a bargain, but outrageous to charge more for the way you chose it to be cooked, which was probably another 2 minutes in the pan/grill.

You often get charged for peppercorn sauce or similar for steak, but I’ve never heard of an extra charge for medium or well done. Did it say it on the menu? If not, I’d have disputed it.

If £11 isn’t enough to charge, they should say £13.
