I was going to have lunch with a friend today who suggested weatherspoons (cheap and cheerful). I could not believe that their 3 small plates have increased from £10 to £15! Which led me onto thinking what else has jumped up a considerable amount product wise! We shop at Aldi so I haven't noticed a big difference YET.

Chappie dog food. Used to be about £4.50, now doubled to £9. Completely mad.

Tbf milk production costs have risen exponentially in last year and considering shitty delas farmers had before, not surprised it doubled. Let's be realistic, 1l of milk even UHT for 95p is still cheap considering the production

Am surprised it costs that much in Aldi though. I pay 69p in Sainsbury's or Tesco (for the cheaper stuff in a standard tetrapak, rather than the pricier ones with a screwtop).

Aldi's farmers have probably same expenses as Sainsbury's farmers.

loadypoady · 06/04/2023 19:33

@JarByTheDoor DH will not have the milk in standard tetrapak for work. That has appeared in Aldi in those packs since the price increase and it was never in previously which makes me wonder why.

@Emigratingimmigrant I'm sure its not the farmer benefitting from the extortionate increase I think it will be Aldi.
My DH works in food manufacturing and he has always said that it is the retailer who makes the profit not the supplier.
If its the farmers in this case then I am happy for them but I cannot help but believe it will be the retailers.

JarByTheDoor · 06/04/2023 20:51

Yeah, I can see why it wouldn't do for work.

Eight pounds for a tin of Bisto gravy granules, Tesco last weekend, they stayed on the shelf.

That must have been missprint because the big tin is £5.50

Emigratingimmigrant · 09/04/2023 06:54

@loadypoady they won't get bigger profits, but they do need to cover their outgoings. I did not suggest the prices went up so farmers get bigger profits but so they cover massively increased expenses. Of course their customers including shops have to give them more.

Leg of lamb for Easter. The price £13.50 per kg. Mine was £6.50 per kg when I bought and froze one a couple of weeks ago. I checked, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons.

I think they always put the prices up at Easter. Bet it’s cheaper next week.

Cadbury mini rolls. Pack of 10 for £3.95 in Sainsbury's.

Hotcrossed · 09/04/2023 09:18

loo paper,
used to be £3.70 for 9 rolls,
now £5

Cosmos123 · 09/04/2023 21:26

I just stare at the items on shop shelves in disbelief sometimes.

Gone are the good old days of BOGOF etc.

Babyroobs · 09/04/2023 23:43

240 PG tips were priced at £8.50 at my local Coop yesterday and 12 eggs £3.30. Exact same items were half the price at Lidl. I honestly can't understand how Coop sell anything much at their prices.

RosesAndHellebores · 09/04/2023 23:48

I think one has to buy bargains when they appear. For example Azeera Coffee for £5 rather than £7.50, TBags when they are on offer, etc. On Saturday, Tesco had legs of lamb for half price - £16. Worth buying one or even two for the freezer.

Groutyonehereagain · 09/04/2023 23:50

Kenco coffee £7 a jar. Mango chutney £4.70 a jar. 🙄

Throughalookingglass · 09/04/2023 23:54

Supermarket prices are crazy. What is the alternative? Avoid eating processed food? Cook from scratch (the price of fresh veg isn't cheap either), stop eating meat? Ingredients for three meals and some other essentials e.g. bread/milk cost 70 pounds yesterday, it included chicken and mince meat. I had one Tesco bag of groceries. One!

SnazzyShambles · 10/04/2023 00:15

Corn flour was 80p just paid £2.85 in Sainsbury’s

Loo rolls are getting ridiculous

9outof10cats · 14/04/2023 19:44

I've always been a brand person, believing cheaper alternatives are not so good (admittedly, sometimes they are not). So when I saw Heinz ketchup had gone up to £4.50, I bought Morrisons - 95% just as good, so I will never return to Heinz - even if the price comes down.

Now use Lidl Formil instead of Persil or Aerial. Cheaper and just as good.

My usual cat litter has increased by £5.00 to £20. Bog off; I got a bigger and better one for £9.99 from BM stores.

I am shopping around a lot more than I used to, basically out of principle - I don't believe all these price increases are justifiable and think there is a lot of profiteering going on.

happyinherts · 14/04/2023 20:44

@9outof10cats Lidl Formil really is excellent. I haven't seen large bottles with the purple top for a while, but I buy the smaller bottle. Really pleased with it.

I've shopped around too. Lidl for Formil, 90p bottles of peach squash, 74p / 1 litre washing up liquid and Cien soaps. I'm sure Tesco are profiteering.

2Earlgreysplease · 15/04/2023 15:35

I'm intrested to know approx what your family of four (including two teenagers) is spending on groceries per week? I have tended to shop locally where possible and only when needed, to avoid massive food shops which then lead to waste which I hate. Although it's great to support local shops and local produce etc etc,it is now becoming unsustainable, so wondering what your average weekly supermarket shop costs and whether you top up?

2Earlgreysplease · 15/04/2023 15:35

sorry, interested!!
