I was going to have lunch with a friend today who suggested weatherspoons (cheap and cheerful). I could not believe that their 3 small plates have increased from £10 to £15! Which led me onto thinking what else has jumped up a considerable amount product wise! We shop at Aldi so I haven't noticed a big difference YET.

Lidl own brand pickle - used to be 59p jumped to 89p and last week 99p. Gave up on Branston years ago probably around a million pounds a jar now !

I'm intrested to know approx what your family of four (including two teenagers) is spending on groceries per week? I have tended to shop locally where possible and only when needed, to avoid massive food shops which then lead to waste which I hate. Although it's great to support local shops and local produce etc etc,it is now becoming unsustainable, so wondering what your average weekly supermarket shop costs and whether you top up?

I agree. Went to my local bakery recently and they wanted £5 for a loaf of bread! Admittedly it was a sourdough loaf, but it was the cheapest bread they had - one loaf was £6.50! Slunk away and back to my usual online delivery

xogossipgirlxo · 17/04/2023 10:45

If anyone interested, Lidl has nice sourdough rye bread and it's less than 2 quid.

Sorry to jump on a thread from over a month ago but this has been a bug bear of mine for weeks now... Asda Swiss Roll, this time last year £1 is now selling (not to me anymore 😤) for £2.10! WTAF?!

danni0509 · 12/05/2023 15:20

I always (used) to buy Tesco pork loin steaks, £3, for 4 or 6 (depending if on offer) occasionally £3.50 if not on offer. I’ve bought them for years.

£4.50 at the weekend!

No chance.

Cordial, I’m funny about sweetners so always buy full sugar cordial, it’s now £4.50 a bottle, I’m sure it was £2.95 before Christmas.

I hate artificial sweeteners but M&S concentrated cordial has a non artificial sweetener and it's just over £1 and tastes good. I bought Rocks full sugar from Tesco at nearly £4. Lasted about a week. Never again 😳

Cat food I've ended up with three cats for various reasons but its expensive and my one cat has a special diet so extra expensive

6 rescues here. Bloody fussy they are too. It's eye watering 😳

fluffylampbear · 12/05/2023 16:06

@QueenBitch666 you can get some great Polish cordials from the polish section of the supermarket pretty cheaply that are sugar only. Lovely raspberry, cherry or strawberry flavour. Check them out.

Also you can make your own cordial very cheaply and easily too with sugar and fruit! on the stove top!

fluffylampbear · 12/05/2023 16:07

here's the sainsbos one: https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/lowicz-syrup-with-raspberry-flavour-drink-400ml

i think they also sell it in morrisons, asda etc

fluffylampbear · 12/05/2023 16:08

@QueenBitch666 sorry that was meant for @User473831

Callipygion · 12/05/2023 22:38

Have you noticed the pouches of Whiskas used to be 100g and they’ve been reduced to 85g! £4.50 for a box of 12. Cheating arseholes.

I don’t like the artificial sweeteners either, but I’ve been buying the double concentrated apple & blackcurrant from Aldi, and it’s ok. Only about 89p for a big 1.5L bottle.

I ‘ve been reading that supermarket sourdough isn’t really sourdough. Whist £5 is ridiculous for bread if you’re just after bread, real sourdough is a lot if faff for a much better product.

This Guardian piece sums it up.

An honest crust? Craft bakeries rise up against ‘sourfaux’ bread

Campaigners say supermarkets are misleading shoppers by labelling loaves as sourdough

Cheese- been buying the same pack forever from Lidl. It’s gone from £1.89 to £2.79 in the last year.

Ariel soap powder 60 washes was £10. They put it up to £11, then a few weeks later reduced the pack size to 50 washes.

Nestle Gluten Free cornflakes have crept up to around £2.70 a box which lasts me a week. Latest packs have been shrunk from 500g to 375g 🤬

YY, sometimes you can find Herbapol in Polish shops too. Both Lowicz and Herbapol are delicious and sugar only.

Heinz ketchup and mayo is ridiculously expensive now. No wonder all cheap ones are being sold out and these are the only left.

Blanketpolicy · 13/05/2023 15:44

Anything in the supermarket really. My twice a week online shop used to be around £40-£50 each time, topped up with treats if there wasn't enough for the £40 min basket. Now it can be double and I review it, make different choices to try to cut each order by a tenner or so.

Fixed rates mean I thankfully haven't been hit by significant mortgage/utilities hikes yet so we are ok, it must be so hard for those who were already living month to month.

RowenaRosewood · 13/05/2023 15:55

Thanks for the Polish drink recommendations, I stopped buying squash because of all the artificial shite in it.

defi · 13/05/2023 16:16

I've not bought diced beef or salmon in some time. Used to eat them both weekly

LubaLuca · 13/05/2023 16:19

I went to buy a packet of chocolate digestive in a Spar type shop the other day. £3.59! I audibly gasped and obviously didn't buy them.

fluffylampbear · 13/05/2023 17:07

@LubaLuca that's really insane!! what planet are they on!?

PauliesWalnuts · 13/05/2023 20:32

I’ve just paid £50 for a cut and finish at my local hairdressers in N.Mcr - used to be £35. Thankfully my hair grows really slowly so I only have it cut 3 times a year, but I cringed a bit.

fluffylampbear · 14/05/2023 15:59

@PauliesWalnuts that's wildly more expensive. I would go longer between the next cuts, maybe cut down to twice a year.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 15/05/2023 15:57

How in the world was a tiny pizza Express pizza £6.50 in Sainsburys?! £4 for a block of own brand cheddar!
